Earlier this month, I embarked on an incredible eight-day Vedic meditation retreat. 🧘♂️ My primary goal for joining this retreat was to remove the veils masking my path forward. As a long term dedicated meditator with a history of attending retreats, I fully appreciate the significance of immersing oneself in the peaceful cocoon of retreat life. It's a beautiful escape from our daily routines, offering us the precious opportunity to deepen our meditation practice, explore asanas, hone our breathwork, and rest in shavasana. 🙏 Being on retreat creates an environment of pure focus, where the benefits are deeply felt. With up to 10 meditation rounds each day and valuable time for discussions and coaching, I found my self-awareness expanding, my life's purpose becoming clearer, and my self-acceptance growing stronger. This journey has also further deepened my spiritual connection that has enriched my life immensely. . The Monastery of Hozoviotissa in Amorgos is the second oldest in Greece built in 1017 and renovated 1088, built by Alexius Comnenus I. It is literally hanging on the cliff side 300 m above the sea. The monastery was created as an ode (poem) to the Grace of Panagia, known as the Virgin Mary, which is the patron saint of the island. The icon is carried around to all the villages on the island every year. A perfect blend of nature and the beauty of man’s creation, the monastery symbolizes man’s tribute to the Holy Mother. Built into the face of a cliff, it provides a breathtaking view of the sparkling blue waters of the Aegean Sea. It is with no doubt, the pride of Amorgos, with its pristine walls lined with portraits of monks and other leaders, the smell of incense and numerous little treasures. The monks, who act as guardians of this architectural marvel, serving psimeni raki (a local liqueur) and loukoumi. The current outer look of the monastery is the result of various changes that happened through time. The building is 40m high and 5m width has 8 stories that develop in a larger width utilizing functional wall recesses of rock. There is a labyrinth interior with the church, the cells and the various auxiliary rooms forming a set that with resourcefulness and usability meets the needs of the monastic brotherhood. Amorgos is a lesser known island that sits in the family of the Cyclades islands and only a few-hour ferry ride from Athens, less from Santorini. It has stunning water ( the Big Blue) and is inhabited by only 1900 people and maybe 5000 goats. Food is grown organically and used seasonally for 85% of meals prepared and served. The people treat you like family and the views and sights to see are heart stopping. Panagia Hozoviotissa . La costruzione sorge solitaria, incastonata su una ripida parete rocciosa a 300 metri a picco sul mare, è alta 40 metri e larga solo 5 e si sviluppa su 8 piani; in alcuni punti l’edificio è largo solo mezzo metro, formando al suo interno un vero e proprio labirinto di calce e legno, tra cappelle, celle dei monaci, magazzini e cucine. L'edificio è praticamente invisibile se non dal mare o dall’inizio della scalinata di accesso; da qui è necessario salire per 267 scalini, seguendo un percorso dalla bellezza mozzafiato: da un lato le asperità delle montagne, dall’altro l’impressionante strapiombo sul mare. Costruito nel 1088 per volere dell'imperatore bizantino Alessio I. Il monastero ha diverse leggende legate al motivo della sua edificazione. Per entrare non si paga nulla, ma è doveroso comunque fare una donazione a mio parere. Dentro ti offrono un bicchierino del loro liquore tipico alla cannella, il più buono dell'isola. Per entrare bisogna essere vestiti. No gambe e braccia scoperte. All'ingresso ci sono diversi indumenti per coprirsi. Anche questi disponibili gratis come il depliant della storia del monastero. I guardiani sono di una gentilezza estrema.
