Yesterday, Houston honored the life of United States Army soldier Vanessa Guillén by dedicating a post office in her name. Guillén is the first Latina to have a post office in Houston. Yesterday's dedication was made possible by Texas Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia (@repsylviagarcia) and the Guillén family, who fought for a bipartisan act by Congress to honor Vanessa's life and legacy. On April 22, 2020, Guillén was killed by a fellow soldier in the armory of the Killeen, Texas, military base. "Vanessa your legacy continues to grow and we will continue to push for more positive change, I love you so much sister. 🤞, " Mayra Guillén said on Instagram. 📸 : @mayraaaguillen

2020 was a catastrophic year because of the covid crisis, and multiple cases of injustice. But with every devastating event unfolding simultaneously, the news coverage of Vanessa Guillen’s disappearance, and the discovery of her murder captured my attention the most. While watching the news for updates on her case, I came across a local artist who challenged other artists in community to paint murals of her so that people would know her name and what she fought for. I painted her portrait with sunflowers because in a news article, her sister mentioned they were her favorite. Instead of a mural, I painted her on canvas cloth because I envisioned the artwork to be with her family so they could always keep it in their house. Somehow, I was able to find out where her memorial service was located and I delivered the painting to a representative of the family. I never got to speak to them due to the high volume of people there and the amount of security, but I could see their appreciation from afar, and that was more than enough for me. Fast forward three months later - I was drinking coffee inside the hospital before my shift. I looked up and suddenly saw my painting on the TV, with an altar built around the painting. I was so shocked to see my painting in their house, exactly as I had manifested it. Three years later, and I see even more detailed footage of the family’s set up with the painting in a Netflix documentary about Vanessa. I knew moving forward that I would be using my art to fight for causes that really mattered, and to share the stories of other beautiful humans.
