Footdee is a hidden gem and one of the most unique communities in Scotland, tucked away just off the Beach Esplanade Aberdeen. Roxburgh Close | Fleshmarket Close, The Royal Mile, Edinburgh . The closes off of The Royal Mile in Edinburgh date back to medieval Scotland and were narrow access paths for residents whose homes were deeper off the main street. Since these passageways were intended to access private residences, their entranceways would be “closed” at night with large gates, hence the name "close.” Closes tend to be narrow with tall buildings on both sides, giving them a canyon-like appearance and atmosphere. A Scots term for alleyway, a close may also be named “entry,” “court,” or “wynd.” Some closes have fame, like Fleshmarket Close, the aptly chosen title of the @ianrankin2 novel.
