📍Shenavall Bothy Fisherfield spam continues (as do my stiff legs from the walk). Two nights spent in Shenavall Bothy might not be for those who want a quieter time however this was a pretty special place to base our walk from. What with it being midweek we didn’t expect many people, but there was a fair crowd both nights. Everyone had different, fairly big hill objectives meaning bed time was civilised. The night before our walk we got to chat to those returning and then a man who was doing some neighbouring Corbetts lit the fire especially for us getting back after we’d done the massive round. Hidden by the giants until the last corner, the bothy comes on you suddenly on the walk in. We could, however, see it teasing us for about 3.5km on the way back, and 1km of that was spent navigating the deep, swampy slime that was the final hurdle between us, the fire and our sleeping bags (and the celebratory drams 🥃). Had a good laugh reading the bothy book and seeing many people mention the ‘swarms of midge’ and felt pretty smug that we’d had a midge free stay in such a wild bothy. One I’ve looked forward to visiting for a while and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The walk out after our mountain day, however, was the longest 7.5km of my life…doesn’t help you need to reascend and descend almost 400m! 🏠 ⛰️ 🌅

📍Fisherfield Munros What a way to kick off the summer hill season, Fisherfield 6 ✔️ Two nights in Shenavall bothy, one Corbett, five Munros, a 15 hour day and 31km through every terrain you can imagine, endless boulders and 1km of the deepest bog you’ve ever seen between you and the bothy right at the end of the day. One of those rounds you anticipate for a good while and it lived up to every expectation. Throwback to when we received the keys for The Hollies 🔑 A different view for you here! On this day 5 years ago, we received the keys for The Hollies. We were actually on holiday in Barbados at the time - we had planned to document the refurb but that all ground to a halt due to lockdown and we were also 400 miles away! Over the next couple of months, we are going to be sharing some photos of the work that went into creating The Hollies as we now know it. You don’t often see photos of us on here, but here is a throwback to the day we brought our families to the Hollies for the first time. It’s fair to say they thought we were nuts for buying this derelict building! A real highlight was being shown around by the previous owner Jimmy, who has sadly now passed away. Despite being almost 90 at the time, he was running up and down all the stairs and delighting us all with stories of the Hollies and the band he used to play in. It’s nice that the music connection has continued as the Hollies used to be THE place for live music. What a beezer of a morning this was. I woke up on the first morning of our holiday in Lochinver with no plans to go out, but I noticed the orange hue of light from the bedroom window. I stumbled across and looked out. Whoa!That light! On with the breeks and straight out to the car and did a quick Lewis Hamilton along Canisp Road and reached the shores of the Loch within five minutes. I set up camera and tripod in similar speed to the gun carriage trials at the military tattoo to catch this one. The light rain created texture in the water, but fortunately I was able to clone the worst of it out in Photoshop. Would you live here? Read on to see why I was put off... At first, I thought I could. I mean, who wouldn't want to be in a stunning Scottish landscape like this? However, when I saw a family getting a photoshoot done by a professional right outside the cottage, I was horrified! Imagine eating your breakfast and looking out your window to see a family right outside it! I'm sure just a few years ago, this place would be the perfect idyll where you probably wouldn't see another person for days, maybe weeks at a time. As much as I love how much press attention Scotland is getting right now, and as a nation, I know we benefit greatly from the tourism trade. At the same time, it is sad to see that some tourists are disrupting locals’ lives in a way we have never seen before. I think as tourists we can all learn a little more respect for the people as well as nature when visiting places. Canongate Tolbooth, Royal Mile, Old Town of Edinburgh. The Tolbooth was built in 1591 and would have formed the local hub for the Canongate burgh, along with the nearby Mercat Cross where merchants met and conducted their business. The Tolbooth would have had many functions, serving as courthouse, burgh jail and meeting place of the town council. The building was constructed for Sir Lewis Bellenden, the justice-clerk for the burgh, and his initials can still be seen over the archway to Tolbooth Wynd. As the Canongate’s main public building it was designed to look impressive and express the burgh’s pride in its long history. The tower over Tolbooth Wynd has small turrets added, known as ‘bartizans’, as well as gun loops to give a sense of ancient battlements. Next to it is the courthouse block, with a staircase, or ‘forestairs’, leading up to its main entrance on the first floor. Look out for the plaque celebrating King James VI as well, complete with latin inscription and a large thistle. The ground floor was used as a prison, mainly for those unable to pay fines or for minor misdemeanours, but on occasion it was used to hold people on behalf of the government. Loch Ness 🦕 As one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks, visiting Loch Ness is definitely one to add to the bucket list. The Scottish lake, Loch Ness is a large, freshwater loch that is located approximately 37 kilometres (23 miles) southwest of Inverness (the nearest town to the Loch and Highland Capital). The surface of its water sits 16 metres (52 feet) above sea level. It is the second largest loch in Scotland, after Loch Lomond when based on surface area, covering an impressive 56 Km2! At its longest point its waters stretch 36km (about 23 miles), and it has a maximum width of 2.7km (about 1.7 miles wide). At its deepest point, the Loch Ness waters go down 230m. This makes it the second deepest loch in Scotland after Loch Moar. Loch Ness has been made famous, by the presence of the one and only Loch Ness monster, that is said to lurk beneath it’s surface. On this day 16 April 1746 the second Jacobite uprising came to a bitter and bloody end on Culloden Moor. The reprisals inflicted by the Hanoverian English Crown are visible to this day in empty glens and straths and the near complete loss of Gaelic culture and language.
