More than 100 pro-Palestinian demonstrators arrested early this morning in the Boylston Place alley at Emerson College are now set to be arraigned next week. In body cam footage provided by Boston Police, officers can be heard before they cleared out the encampment asking protestors to move willingly, saying they didn't want to arrest anyone, but fire codes were being broken. The demonstrators, who had been there for several days, did not leave. Supporters say the officers used unnecessary force to make the arrests. Police have only shared footage from their initial interactions with protestors; BPD says detectives are still reviewing footage of the arrests. They say four officers were hurt. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu defended the move, saying "there was no issue with the protests", but instead "with fire hazards from the tents and ... public health and safety risks". The alley is publicly owned. Wu says she is reviewing everything caught on camera. Emerson cancelled classes today, and demonstrations are banned in the alley through the weekend. In a letter to students, Emerson College President Jay Bernhardt says the school understands "clearing the encampment has significantly and adversely impacted our community". TWELVE YEARS IN BOSTON 🥹 • 12 years ago today I packed up 23 years of life in New Jersey and drove to Boston. I didn’t know a soul. A true fresh start. Realistically, I wasn’t ready. But when are we ever really *ready* for anything? I think I called home crying for a solid month (and still do 12 years later 🙃). When I look back at this time it feels like yesterday… Yet an eternity. Throughout the good, the bad, the worse, the ugly, the heavies, the tears, the grief, the jobs, the moves. I made a family here. I married into the best of the best. And I made friends that became family. Both my friends and family have adopted me. Hugged me. Invited me. Cried with me. Carried me. Laughed with me. And just understood me. For me. I have had many doubts through this process - But one person has always kept me grounded. He was the first one who said yes when I had the idea of moving. He pushed me (and still does) when I second guess. He supports my real job, my balloon business, and everything in between. He’s my dad. And he’s the only one that remembers this anniversary. He called me today to reminisce. And before the call ended with him. My mom yelled in the background, “Now get her back home!” Which I secretly loved. 12 years later. And it’s the very reason I cry every time I leave. New Jersey will always be home.
