🌟Day 4: Mental Health Awareness Week: DIY Windmill I'm a big fan of a windmill! Not only are they a beautiful addition to your garden but they can be used to show children how their breath "moves" , in meditation, a calm down tool or sensory toy. The plastic kind are showing up everywhere at the moment like at garden centre and The Works! But if you fancy a little craft activity this weekend you can make your own too! You need: 🌈Coloured paper (avoid card) 🌈A glue stick 🌈Pipe cleaner 🌈 A straw 🌈Scissors 🌈Pens (optional) First make a sqaure out of your paper by folding a corner down and making a mark where the paper reaches the side, then snip of the rectangle shape you don't need. I haven't done this on mine but now is the time to decorate your square! Use whatever you like just avoid heavy craft items. Next from each corner, cut into the centre of the square leaving about an inch. If you cut too close to the centre you're windmill won't stay together very well Now your square should have 4 flaps. Next glue ONE corner of each flap into the centre. You need to make sure this is nice and stuck down for the next step *Adult supervision* now cut or use something sharp like a kebab stick to make a small hole in the centre Thread your pipe cleaner through the hole. Securing the front of the windmill and twisting a small part of the pipe cleaner into a little knot Thread your pipe cleaner onto a straw And enjoy!! Buy some lavender flowers (mine were £3 from ebay) or pick some from your garden if your lucky🌸 Their lovely colour and scent can be used in playdough, oats, water, rice or pasta play. Just mix it all in a container or tray, add some tools or yogurt pots and get mixing!! 🟣Lavender is well known for it's calming qualities and used in night sprays, with meditation oils and massages and did you know calms your nervous system and improves your mood? Personally for me it makes me really sleepy and ready for bed! 🌟Day 2: Mental Health Awareness Week: Spa box This activity I catered to the items I had already or wanted to introduce new ones that I thought would be a nice little quiet-time activity for me and my daughter. Setting up objects like this in a basket or tray doesn't only keep them contained but it brings the essence of a 'topic', something new and special to explore. My daughter already had the meditation barbie and books, but I added some of my own things like moisturiser and hair cream. Again only use what you know your child might enjoy or doesn't have an allergy too. I had it in mind that we would create a spa afternoon. So I would make us some caffeine free tea, some Cucumber and hummus snacks maybe, and we would use the items in the tray together. Maybe do each others nails, make some lemon water, read a nice book. Just remember not to put too much pressure on talking or doing anything in particular. Sit in silence or play some calming music. My daughter personally loved this and played with it for ages! She also wanted to save the water so her daddy could have a turn when he came home from work🤪 We loved going on a sunny walk to pick the small flowers and then used them in this calming activity. It was like 2 for 1! Small Talk💬 What's a fun way to discuss your child's day with them when it could have already been a stressful day and it's time for the bed-time routine to start soon? Maybe you want to cut back on screen time or the evenings are so busy there's just not enough time to think about anything else. But prioritising just 10mins for you to reconnect with your little one can really improve their understanding of empathy, make them feel valued and show them you are truly interested in their life. Some ideas to get you started may be colouring together. Go for a walk if the weather is nice or play open-ended play like lego or puzzles. Then ask questions about what happened with their day and share any worries with you. Encourage them to be imaginative and look back on the activities. What do they remember? What was important? Did any big emotions arise? What did they enjoy the most? Were they with you or were they are school? Allow them the chance to share their mind freely so they don't end their day with zero closure. Always remind them that they can start the next day afresh, try out new possibilities, and explore new adventures with you there to guide them.....🧡 Ps: I do this every night when I put my 3year old to bed and we've made it part of our evening routine. Life recently as a Preschool Teacher and mum...... December hit off with a bang with 4 birthdays to celebrate, going to the Christmas tree farm and visiting Winchester Market. We've enjoyed a trip to @bockettsfarm with my Preschool that actually blew me away! I was so impressed with their attention to detail and making the Santa's grotto feel like a realistic experience. We've been also been enjoying some down time as a family. I tried a new @yogitea which I must admit has made me feel alot more calm since I've been drinking it! My daily hikes have been cut to maybe once a week due to darker evenings and lots of rain. I have a new book that is actually for more of the younger generation but the reviews for it are so good and it's Waterstones book of the year so I'm excited to snuggle down and enjoy it with the Christmas lights on in the evenings. We finished up for Christmas break yesterday with our Nativity for parents at @stmarysfetcham and I put my creative skills to good use by painting the backdrop and making some props for all of the children . We created a modern version of the Christmas story and the best way to describe the experience with over twenty 3year olds was organised chaos😅 I hope everyone is enjoying the run up to Christmas, it can be a difficult time for some people as it brings up so many different emotions, some happy, some sad or maybe even dread or guilt. You’ve heard me say it before … and I’ll say it again and again and again … I LOVE DORKING! Last week a lovely couple bought these bedside tables and a number of other pieces from just up the street from me @harmans_home_interiors Nick & Paul from Harmans kindly took the bedsides on their van … made much more sense than two separate deliveries 🚚 As a little thank you I bought them some @dorkingbrewery beers from @cobbettsrealales And then later in the week Ian @westdawmenswear hosted a great evening get together for lots of my fellow local independent shop owners to share ideas and pick each others brains. We all spend a lot of time on our own trying to make our businesses work … and even though we all have the company of our lovely customers it can occasionally feel a bit lonely or overwhelming. I just love that we can share ideas and experiences to make the whole town a better place … a bit like a giant department store with expert advice in the individual departments. We’re not in competition … we’re all part of the same goal. So that happened...! 🤪 Had crazy day today...went to pick up a secondhand shelf I’d bought on a selling site(very happy with it). child no. 2 is sick all over himself in the car! 🤢 Now have a strange sense of achievement that we all survived to tell the tale. 😂. I’m probably more chilled out now because of it. Maybe a sense that things happen that you can’t control and you realise your inner strength and ability to handle life’s little challenges. This is not a styled shot but really happy with my black reed diffuser from @ranmorecandleco at @sandrockhouse lovely shop in Dorking. I’m not very good at commiting to bold statements and usually go conservative with anything expensive! However, we made a big commitment to black when we decided on 15 metres of floor to ceiling glass in black frames🤣 from @theheritagewindowcompany. So, using black in the decor really does pop out nicely against the windows. Quite a contrast to the Mid century style furniture in rich coloured woods and @ercol_uk original pieces (thanks Nana!) all softened with my @loafhome ‘happy’ sofa and few cushions. Black could seem harsh and not very warm or welcoming but we went for @karndean_uk Savannah Oak herringbone flooring laid in a herringbone pattern and the soft wood tones just make you melt into a sea of calm. The styling of our extension is still a work in progress. Held back often by my expensive taste that I can’t afford. (Finally used last years Christmas present of some @johnlewisandpartners vouchers to buy 2 stunning dining chairs!) (hoping for more this year so I can get 2 more😁) It’s hard work trying to get the look you want with a tight budget but slowly and thoughtfully, I’m obtaining some choice second hand items that don’t break the bank but add to the scheme beautifully.
