The Hambleton Hobble. To be honest, we have never heard of The Hambleton Hobble walk until a couple of days ago when we had some guests book who were doing it. You learn something new everyday! The Hambleton Hobble is an alternate to the more we'll known walk, The Lyke Wake Walk. The Hobble was devised in 1983 and is a 51km circular route on The North York Moors. It's origins was to link the four pubs of Osmotherley, Hawnby, Scawton and Silton. If walking is your thing, and want to do a long distance walk, without it being too long of a distance, this one sounds perfect. Or if your a long distance walker, it's another hike to tick off. 17 miles in the bag today and only drove 5 minutes down the road for this one. Living in the country definitely has its perks! I even managed to include a park run too ✌🏻. 17 mile loop: Start at Geltsdale nature reserve and take the quarry trail up to where the path meets the road. You go through a large metal gate here. Turn right and head towards Farlam, via Kirkhouse. These are all signposted. From Farlam, follow the trail route to Talkin Tarn. This is where we did Talkin park run. Might as well get one in while we can! Head to Geltwood and via left heading towards the viaduct bridge. From here follow the signs to Greenwell and Castle Carrock. Run through Castle Carrock until you get to the pub and then turn left. Head straight up that road. It’s a very steep incline to the top! At the top of the road, you will see parked cars and a track heading straight. Follow that path until you reach the river. Head over the bridge and via right. Follow the trail path until you reach Talkin Fell summit. The views from the top are unreal! Once at the top, take the path north of the fell. This brings you out towards a road. From the road, turn right and follow that road until you reach the metal gate. You will recognise it from the beginning of the route. Go through the gate and follow the Quarry trail back to the car! It was very boggy today but I intend to come back and do it in the sunshine! Good morning from North Devon. The countryside looks beautiful in the early morning light, but with the intensive farming nature has paid a heavy price. My biggest regret is that my grandchildren haven’t seen the amount of flora and fauna that I and people of my generation have when walking in the countryside. It wasn’t perfect then but it was much better than the present situation. We all have to eat, but I think with today’s technology we have the ability to do much more to preserve nature at the same time. We are very lucky to have our local, The Owl at Hawnby (@the_owl_hawnby) back open.... Our guests and us certainly missed having it open. The kitchen is run by Sam (who had the fabulous Bantam in Helmsley). With Lee (manager) running out front with amazing service. We ate there last week and will happily recommend to everyone, the food was delicious (we wouldn't expect anything less from Sam). Just a mile from us, it's within walking distance, however it's not a flat mile!! Thoughts please?? At the other end of Easterside Hill there is a pile of stones that walkers add to, as an "I was here". It also marks the highest point of the hill, where it's actually a mountain, as it's over 1000 foot above sea level. Any way, someone has been naughty and removed the stones from the pile but doing so has unearthed this "thing" pictured. Its a man made, concrete circle, about an inch and a half deep. Our educated guess would be that was for collecting rain water for the grouse and other birds to drink from. But we don't actually know what it is or what it was for, or even how long its been there. We have asked the local retired gamekeeper, who's father, was the keeper before him and he has never seen anything like it before. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what it is? Does anyone know for sure what it is?
