There isn’t a lot to say right now other than I’m really really really frustrated. It’s been THREE years of injury. I broke my 4th and 5th metatarsals in a fluke accident. Jumped while wearing flip flops and landed on my toes wrong. Surgery is scheduled for May 6. More to come when I’m up for it. Glass is currently 1/8 full for the @nycmarathon …… . . . . #injuredrunner #injuredrunneragain #3injuriesin3years #brokenfoot #runnernotrunning #xrays #crookedtoes

A better word do describe it might be “antifragile”… We’ve been listening to the great book, Antifragile by Nassim Nicholas Taleb on our morning jogs near Recover HQ (shoutout easy runs + audiobooks). The central problem Taleb digs up is that there isn’t a good word to describe the way living things respond to stress. Fragile = breaks under stress Robust / Resilient = stays the same under stress Antifragile = gets better in response to stress The word he invents, “antifragile”, captures the physiology of runners and our great challenge (not getting injured) perfectly. We get faster when we run more. We become less susceptible to injury when we perform heavy strength exercises and difficult plyometrics. Thinking of our bodies as “antifragile” is also kind of empowering and badass. Try it. Your knee is actually one notch better than “resilient” it’s f-ing antifragile! (This concept also explains why we have to do split squats to get rid of IT band pain 😂 )

Coming back to running after an injury is one of the trickiest parts about this sport. It's a science, and it's also an art. To give us all the lowdown on what any runner making a comeback should consider, we brought one of our good friends, Dr. Matthew Klayman DPT @kineticklaymanpt , onto the Recover blog. He's rehabilitated hundreds of runners and navigated his own injury challenges over the years. We're thrilled to share this short article because it's full of interesting science and full of the kind of supportive, forward thinking, and positive language that helps make healthy running possible for anyone. It’s at the link in our bio if you’d like to check it out!!

“I’m a guy with simple tastes. I enjoy dynamite, gunpowder, and gasoline…You know what they have in common? They’re cheap.” - The Joker, 2008 There are lots of expensive, overcomplicated, and time consuming solutions out there for runners with Achilles Tendon issues, but the most simple and most affordable system beats all of them Today on the Recover blog we summarize the most up to date research on Achilles Tendonitis/Tendinopathy and show you the most effective ways to train out pain and soreness! It’s at the link in our bio if you’d like to check it out

Ever had a sore tibialis posterior musculotendinous unit? Umm what? In english that’d be, “pain behind that bone on your ankle?” If you’ve ever had issues with the posterior tibial tendon, this can be a cool exercise to try! Funnily enough, there isn’t a great deal of good scientific literature on posterior tibial tendon pain. The conclusions are pretty much that loading exercises are good and folks aren’t sure which kind (eccentric, isometric, or concentric) is best. Our Posterior Tibialis routine includes both eccentric and concentric exercises. That's called "splitting aces," baby!

2021 Running Resolution #2… MORE SQUATS 🍑 We like to track mileage, well guess what, this year, we’re adding squats! More squats = stronger quads, stronger butts, more core strength, and more happiness* *probably

And on the next episode of #BOOTLIFE ... #booooooooo 👎🏼 . It looks like my favorite fall-fashion piece is back. #restandrehab 🖤🤦🏼‍♀️ I’ve been running with pain since sometime prior to the Timp Half, (it must have happened on a trail-wobble somewhere...) and it finally got bad enough to get me in. A medial tendon tear/grade 2, and hopefully another sentence in the boot and some R&R can get things back to happy in a bit. 🏃🏼‍♀️💕 Ready to dig deep into my nutrition and figure some things out and boost some some other things up, because this can’t be a yearly thing!... 😬😬😬 (Hallelujah that IM was cancelled, or I’m sure I’d still be trying to push through!) . #listentoyourbody #injuredrunnerAGAIN #samebootnewfootwhodis #wearetherunners @salmingrunningnorthamerica @wattieink @wattieinkracing . . . . . . . . #injured #injuredagain #walkingboot #motherrunner #motherrunners #crazymotherrunners #trailrunner #trilife #trilife365 #womenoftri #tri #lovetotri #trihard #trainhard #runnerproblems #runnerprobs

Frustrated.....sore hamstring! . . On Saturday’s marathon pace run I felt my hamstring but not enough to be concerned. 😬 Monday’s slow run it was fine. 😀 Tuesday’s steady 5 miles I could feel it again. 😬 Wednesday’s slow run was fine. 😀 Today as soon as I tried to run fast it hurt! 😭 So I abandoned my session, got back to the caravan but no ice, so I have massaged it with the theragun. 🙏 . . What rubbish timing with my first 10km race on Sunday. . . #sorehamstring #notgoodtiming #massage #injuredrunneragain #injuredrunner #injuredrunnerproblems

Eek I haven’t posted on here in over a month! That’s because I got injured and haven’t actually done any running really......😔I must have overdone it at the beginning of lockdown and managed to get myself a bursa on my heel. It was sore and I did rest it for a couple of weeks. I then saw @physiomo77 who said I could do 3km max at a ratio of 3mins run, 1min walk and I guess I kind of lost my mojo a bit. Don’t get me wrong, I was still packing in the miles on my bike and walking but I was scared to run. I’ve been heat treating it and putting Hirudoid cream on it. I’ve also come to stay with a friend in Hove (for my own mental health) and to be honest, the scenery within half a mile of her house is quite stunning, especially on a day like today! I even managed to get in the sea for a swim on Tuesday! (in my tri wetsuit, I’m not that brave..... 🥶) I’m going to hopefully try and get out for a very short run again over the weekend to steadily see how my foot reacts! #sheppertonrunninggroup #hove #injuredrunneragain #running #ukrunchat #runnersofinstagram

Not the greatest running start to 2020. Supposed to be running Stirling’s Race to the Castle but my foot is painful to walk on and I’m waiting on Scottish Gas engineer to come and (hopefully) fix the boiler. Currently wearing 100 layers and maxing out on coffee. It’s 50mph winds, driving rain and gale warnings so maybe I’ve lucked out with the race #running #injuredrunneragain #training #runnersofinstagram #igrunning #halfmarathon #marathon #trailrunning #oldladywoes

Brrr. It was a chilly morning for a walk. I had to wear a jacket. With a broken rib, walking is what I can do, so that’s what I do. It’s a good time to listen to a book. The pain lessens a little bit every day. For instance, I can finally turn over in bed at night with minimal discomfort. Also, what’s up Strava? Why won’t you record my walking time correctly. I am not going that slowly that autopause is on. That was a 67 minute walk not 8 min. 😂 #morningwalk #walking #princedwardcounty #milleniumtrail #injuredrunneragain #makingthebestofit #stravaerror

Well....that’s just great 😒😒😒 I sure don’t do things in halves....double stress fracture. I’m so lucky! Guess I’d better learn to swim. Anyone want to go to the Gold Coast and run the marathon in my place? Going cheap! #devastated #nomorerunning #injuredrunneragain #doublestressfracture

Second ankle sprain in less than a month on the mend. Still wearing a brace and not running but felt good enough for 2 miles on the Lateral X varying width and resistance of stride! This machine used to kick my 🍑in 15 minutes flat! I’m glad there was no flare of ankle pain and felt great to get back in the gym! Life, work, injury... I’ve not done much since my last interval run almost 2 weeks ago. Thanks to @robinphx62 for stopping in for pre-workout chat! - - - #injuredrunneragain #pickmyfeetup #needtopickmyfeetup #corncobsmademefall

Just me and my BFF here rolling it out on a Tuesday! I’ve decided since I’m still having a bit of pain that I’m taking a one week run break! Going to supplement all running with cross training. Hoping that will officially do the trick and I’ll swing back into marathon training. My last 4 marathons I’ve trained for something major has gone wrong. Despite a 2 week hiatus last fall towards the end of my training, I still snagged a BQ and a 23 minute marathon PR, so that confidence is enough to keep me going. It’s so hard to have faith and trust, but I know I’m fitter and faster than I’ve ever been, and nothing worth having comes easy. Did 45 outside on the bike this morning, doing another 30 this evening on the elliptical, and every day I’ll do my calf strengthening exercises. I’m staying committed, and staying smart most of all! #teamrun4prs #teamzensah #injuredrunneragain #injuredrunner #runnernotrunning #chicagomarathon #marathontraining

Beautiful morning for a... swim 😏Not my favorite activity but it's sunny and it's what my body can handle right now. It's ok to be angry and sad for a bit every time the Universe throws you a loop, but my propensity to get dragged down deep by ultimately insignificant events is debilitating and unhealthy. Unfortunately it's also comfortable and familiar and easy to accept. Trying hard for an attitude adjustment today and thankful there are people who put up with my craziness. ~ Don't let your struggle become your identity ~ Not sure who said that. Not me. But it's good. #newtanlines #gogglemarksfordays #sidetracked #pitypartybedamned #injuredrunneragain #missmytrails

Fun fact: you CAN strain your abdominal muscles while running! I went for a run yesterday, felt a cramp, walked, and then continued my run. But today the abs still hurt 😭 praise Jesus for PT friends who can educate me without an appt! Definitely wearing a belly band for this weekends 5k! #strainedabs #pregnantrunner #fitpregnancy #injuryiseasy #pumpthebump #slowisthenewfast #momswhorun #injuredrunneragain
