Vandaag zijn we gaan wandelen op Landgoed Schovenhorst, op jacht naar 'Het zwaartepunt van Nederland'. Uiteraard gevonden met hulp van Google Maps. We hadden geluk met het weer. Zelfs het zonnetje kwam regelmatig tevoorschijn.♡ Gezellig hapje gegeten in het hotel. JP saté en ik een heerlijk visgerecht. 4 miles for #sundayrunday - my longest run (without stopping/walking!) in 2 months! On the way back from the grocery store I pointed out a spot that I ran through earlier this morning to my daughter and she said “wow, you ran fast today!” And I said no, I definitely did not run fast, but the key to running longer and not having to stop is slow and steady. So I was able to run farther today because I didn’t run fast. I’m in my slow and steady era and that’s just fine by me. I definitely had some fomo seeing all of the @gostlouis posts yesterday and I hope everyone running had an awesome race! I heard great things about the new courses and post-race party and I hope to be back on that start line next year. I’m getting this running thing back… slowly and steadily. Sunday Funday Another Sunday morning at the beach, but this time with the whole family, for a race. Which only one of the two of us ran (spoiler alert: not me 😆). Trying to get back to running after injury? Here are the steps I take with most of my runners after they have an acute injury. Reduce LoadWe want to protect the injury by reducing load. But continue to load it as tolerated. Some load helps prevent atrophy and allows for faster return to previous level of running. Reintroduce Load (Slowly)Gradually increase non-running activity as tolerated (Pain < 3/10). This includes walking, biking, resistance training, etc. Improve Running FitnessOnce pain with daily activities resolves, focus on improving your general strength and conditioning. Sunday Runday and my second medal in a week 🥰 This was a fun little run in the rain starting and ending in @colchester_zoo so I got to see some 🐘 🦓 🦏 @runthroughuk Still have a niggle in my left knee so strapped it, awful blister on the my forefoot (left foot) and a dodgy groin on the right side 😂 so kept it steady and changed to my usual walk/run after about 3 miles, the thing I’ve found is my knee hurts more when I have to run slowly, I need to move faster to move better and this is hard when you are on a narrow road and struggle to get past people! So I do find that bit a little frustrating! So I haven’t posted all week because I had a bit of a nasty fall whilst out on a club run on Tuesday and I’m also dealing with lingering sinusitis 🤧 I tripped on a piece of concrete sticking out the ground and landed on my face, cutting the inside and outside of my lip with my teeth and ending up in a&e having it glued 😳 I also banged my knee up but that seems ok thankfully (scroll to photos at the end 🤕🤕) I felt rubbish the next few days but it’s healing well and the outside is hardly noticeable now with a bit of makeup 😅 it’s really shocking when you have a fall like that and hit your head, I was just grateful to have friends with me to help. I managed a 7.5 mile run on Friday, alone and easy pace just to get myself back out there. It was anxiety provoking at first but I settled into it eventually. I just had to make myself do it, or I knew I’d end up overthinking it all too much. Yesterday was my club @thurrocknomads @parkrunuk takeover and our annual award event in the evening, just what I needed 🥰 Lots of fun and laughs were had, and I even won an award. The bag was packed and the outfit chosen (by my son who's currently obsessed with The Little Mermaid), but my body had other plans. I started getting sick, still should be ok to run right? Can someone PLEASE tell Mother Nature that it’s ok to stop with the rain now! 7 wonderful miles in the pouring rain on the plan (for yesterday 😣) didn’t look at my watch at all, ran completely to feel and just embraced being out and able to run! It felt easy throughout, although I think 7 miles were a little shock to the legs after recovery since a gentle restart to running following the calf injury on NYEE. Took my foot to therapy. Walked 3km to the centre, i say say centre, it's more open-plan really... Over looking a river, actually. Foot not ouchy. 5km at running for bus speed. Could not catch the number 17 in either direction. Walked home. Woman in car wound down her car window and asked - Where can I get a newspaper from? A newsagent, I replied. And if you don't phrase your questions right you gonna get an autistic response!* Thank you and good night! Foot pain as soon as I woke up. It's ok, i'll get a Taylor Swift sock to sort it out. They say, “That what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.” Ahhh, okay. I don’t feel very strong now. In time….. Scootered a mile in 34+ minutes. Was slow but was some work! I have 6 more days of this pink cast. Pretty much over it. I’m ready to move on. I’m getting antsy. I rode my spin bike yesterday, just to move! Was so slow, my watch didn’t even recognize the ride as exercise (which is fine). So excited for the next chapter of my recovery. It’s still going to suck but not as bad as a month in a non-weight bearing cast. Enjoying a beverage with the dogs. Happy that I got in some intentional movement today. I’m happy (for not being “happy” 🤪). Progress is never linear… and after eight weeks off running, it turns out my injury is worse than it first appeared. Being on crutches and non weight bearing isn’t ideal but if it’s what’s needed to get this stress fracture healing, it’s worth it. Thankfully there is still an awful lot I CAN do. Upper body weights, time in the pool, indoor cycling… and hobbling about on the sticks is a workout in itself. Looking forward to getting back to work this week - I can still work my clients hard even while I’m taking a rest!

I enjoyed a lovely chatty run, but afterwards, my hip was VERY unhappy. Worst pain there so far. Hopefully it’s just a warning to not skip my warm up, as I did not have time for it today before the start whistle, but this has been haunting me for some time now so I think it’s high time to get get it looked at. Worst thing would be for it to get so bad that Chicago falls off the calendar. This would be BEYOND devastating. Not willing to risk that, so a check over is due next week. First run since Nationals in AUGUST after wrecking my hami and herniating my back a year and a half ago. It was slow and it was short but I was practically pain free— minus the side cramp I had .5 miles in. I’m so excited that my epidural seems to have helped somewhat. Still debating if I should get a second one, as my doc said that could help even more. I’m so out of running shape but this is giving me hope for @pleasantprairietri on my birthday weekend!! Another milestone: being able to sit cross-legged…sorta, kinda. 🧘 The hardest part of recovering from a severe tibia-fibula fracture (compound/displaced/spiralized— triple whammy 💥 🦴 ), for me, has been regaining the full range of motion in my knees and ankles. I can’t wait until I can get back to yoga at @theprancingpeacock It will be 12-weeks post-accident on Monday. I’m now walking, mostly without the boot; driving (stick shift!) short distances; and hitting the gym a few times a week (weights/bike). At this point, I have zero doubts that I’ll run again It’s been one day at a time, one moment at a time. Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion is a surgery to remove a herniated or degenerative disc in the neck. An incision is made in the throat to reach and remove the disc. A graft is inserted to fuse together the bones above and below the disc. ALL this because I fell running in the winter last year training for my Eau Claire 1/2 marathon during snowy and icy conditions, smacked my neck on the road and herniated a disc badly in c6-c7. Not worth it runner friends! Dreadmill > surgery any snow day IMO 😆 It is healing nicely though!! For anyone else dealing with an injury and not being able to achieve your marathon goals this year, my heart goes out to you! This has been such a depressing time not being able to do the thing I love most and what makes me most proud of myself. Sunny Saturday Whew! We made it through the busy week….to a busy Saturday morning 🤪. But whatever, it’s a beautiful one AND Colfax and I saw many of our PRC friends AND we got to restart the Couch to 5K run/walk plan I had used after my ankle sprain, but then had to abort two weeks before the end when I tore my meniscus. 🤞🏻 I make it all the way through this time! So it’s back to week 1, which is 5 sets of 3 minutes walk, 1 minute run. And today it felt GREAT! So, got a diagnosis this morning. My body is messed up but I'll get some PT, do some stretches to adjust my hip alignment and pelvic tilt and get back to running before long. Thank goodness. It's a natural antidepressant and I need it. #injuredrunner

There isn’t a lot to say right now other than I’m really really really frustrated. It’s been THREE years of injury. I broke my 4th and 5th metatarsals in a fluke accident. Jumped while wearing flip flops and landed on my toes wrong. Surgery is scheduled for May 6. More to come when I’m up for it. So after Sunday’s run (like 10 hours later), my knee started to hurt and even though it is better than it was, I can still feel something 🙄 my husband and I were walking at lunch and we ran across the road..which hurt 🙄 After having 2 weeks off running, I really wanted to get back into it asap, but it looks like I’ll have to wait a bit longer. So I’ve been cycling this week which I like enough, just not as much as running! I’ve also been doing a bit of S&C, Pilates and yoga, going on feel, hopefully I will be able to get back to running soon! I have no idea what happened, I wonder if all the steps I did on holiday just took their toll? It’s definitely more than the steps I’d normally do, and the fact we were walking around all day? a little injury update! we graduated the run/walk program🥹 i started this earlier in the month, had a flare up, so cross trained for another two weeks and it was evident that the body just needed more time. next up, I’ll start steady runs and slowly increase the time on those with the help of my coach @itsamarython . truly, just happy to be in a place where I can run down the street without pain. it’s been almost 4 months since I toed the line and dnf’d at Houston. The longest (& shortest?) weeks but in these weeks of being injured I fell back in love with strength training (your girl can do a pull up!!), went about my days slower & with more intention then ever, and spent more time cheering on friends in their races which was so fun. I have an idea of a potential race on the calendar later this year, but I’m also not putting any timeline to what “getting back” looks like for me. really just want to go for an enjoyable 5-6 mile run with my friends😅 Y’all have been my hype gals (& guys!) from the beginning and I so appreciate you being in my corner. MRI done ✔️ Now just to wait for the results and I’ve been told it could be 4+ weeks to get them 🤯 After two years of this, I am so done with shin pain, surely there has got to be a reason for it? X-rays are all fine, the physio, podiatrist and GP can’t find a reason for it. I’ve tried everything I’ve been told to but every time I think it’s gone, it comes back with a vengeance and this time, it’s hurting when I’m walking too. Fingers crossed there’s no stress fracture but it would be great if they could find some explanation as to why I can’t ever seem to shake the shin pain. Early morning gym, followed by a walk up to the Downs and back into Clifton Village, coffee and cake with friends, then to the physio! I am definitely seeing an improvement with my ankle. I’m still having some Achilles issues but my TibPos is getting less painful and a bit stronger. I’ve got some additional little exercises from the physio to do each day - along with loading some of my other exercises. In the gym I am carrying out a mix of easy and interval sessions on the cross trainer and bike - which is helping keep my fitness and get that endorphin hit. Week 17/52 #everyfridayin2024 Every friday 3 year run streak ✔️ It wasn’t far, it wasn’t fast, but it was the best run 🥹 After a week of no running, due to being an #injuredrunner , just FYI! 😅🙈 - just to be able to do 2.5km and to keep the streak going felt amazing I may have cried a little on my way home! But Erin - why so emosh! Well funny you should ask that! -When you’re not a ‘naturally athletic’ person And you done everything you could as a kid to get out of sports, to then as an adult develop a severe #passion for #longdistancerunning, doing hard #elevation in the mountains, -To have the fear of maybe not being able to run that race you’ve trained so hard for, especially when you’re out to prove nothing to nobody, but absolutely everything to yourself. -When you put your 100% into your training because you fu*king love it so much - to then have to pull back from it due to injury is gut wrenching But to then take yourself out for that little run and have the hope that your body is amazing and is healing itself and you didn’t have to hobble back home.💪🏼 So Yes! The days and nights are long and I know my body is worn out and tired. Trying to make a come back in this stressful, busy season is making it much more challenging but that doesn’t mean as soon as I could run I wouldn’t try. It’ll just take longer and that’s okay. I’d still choose this uncertain, chaotic season with teenagers driving and all of their “issues” than when they were toddlers. It’s not easier or harder it’s just different. I was glad to be outside and have the ability to run. I added some distance. Not quite 4 but almost. This run as tough as it still is was definitely the easiest part of my day. I was supposed to do this run yesterday, but potential covid symptoms kept me indoors and resting up. The walk that should have happened this morning! Had a great walk with Luna this morning and survived PT! Survived is the key word 😅 my hip is doing great and I don't have pain when walking or trying to run! I ran a quarter mile straight at the start of PT, and the biggest standout is the difference of strength in my legs. It felt like my left leg was a spaghetti noodle lol so I got to do a lot of single leg exercises and hot damn! The progress I've made is incredible. I said a shocking set of words earlier, "I don't have pain when I do things" and it's true! A few years ago, when I was leading a beginner's running group, I remember saying that I almost wished I was a beginner again myself so I could tick off all the milestones once more: 5K, 10K, half, marathon... Ever heard the saying "Be careful what you wish for, it might come true!" 😄 That's where I am now. Right back at the start. Still only doing short runs at the moment, but have tried some interval stuff this week and realised just how unfit I am. I've probably not done any proper training for nearly a year so shouldn't be surprised, but it's a bit disheartening! On the (huge) plus side, my hip feels good so far and for that I'm very grateful. Already I feel my op was definitely worthwhile. Overwhelmed. That’s the best way I can describe what I’m feeling right now. Despite today being a high foot pain day I did some treadmill intervals anyway. Thanks to eating ramen two days in a row while I was in zoom classes, I put on 9 pounds (mostly💧obviously) but it’s a lot and I’m physically uncomfortable. Even my fingers and face are puffy. If this ever happened pre-surgery I was too big to notice. But I desperately needed to move my body and zone out for a while, so I ignored the throbbing foot. My schedule has been packed, im exhausted and everything seems to be going wrong. I miss being content and I miss stability, because this shit is draining my soul. This is a source of frustration for a lot of ambitious runners. Their aerobic fitness is great, but they just keep on picking up injury after injury. This ☝️ can be one of the reasons. Things take time to adapt, so we have to be patient and play a longer game. I’ve seen a few people give up running altogether for this very reason. If this describes you, there’s nothing wrong with your body. It’s totally normal. But you MUST take your time layering in different types of intensity, especially off the back of previous injuries. Haven’t been feeling too creative these last two weeks not being able to run, so sorry for not posting much content. I am so thankful I’m allowed to move my body in different ways still! I got my MRI results back and it’s looking more like a stress reaction rather than a stress fracture. My doctor told me I can run the half on Sunday, but I will need to eventually take a break and rest my leg to fully heal it. I have another half marathon on May 18th and am thinking to maybe take the three extra weeks off to heal some more and feel even better by that race. The fighter in me though wants to run Sunday! Ahhhh decisions, decisions!! I wanted to thank all my lovely friends on here for checking in on me daily! You all have become my running family and I don’t think I’d be getting through this in such a positive mindset without you all. I’ve received so many great tips, heard stories about similar injuries, have gotten medical advice, and have gotten too many well wishes to even count! I am so blessed and lucky for you all and wanted to really let you know how much I appreciate this overwhelming kindness. Countdown to @topcityrun Year 5 with a look back at 2022 Let's start by noting... I ran this with my foot so taped and bandaged! Turns out I had a hairline fracture that I'd received back in January 2022 during my 1st Marathon 🤦‍♀️🫣 Went to the Doc shortly after TopCity Course was very similar to the prior with a few deviations. It was a very windy day, so coming back over the bridge to finish up that hill... last 2 miles or so... were torture! Did my best to stay upright as we battled the wind over the river, but I found squatting and leaning into the wind, taking one slow step at a time, was easier than to try and run at that point. But finished with many friends on course either Cheering, wheeling, or organizing! Even though I was in pain, and it was windy, and overall a hard race, I had sooooo much fun!!! Saturday's weather, now that I can see hourly updates... Still high 60s/low 70s. Day still shows rain overall but 🤞 we may catch a break in the morning! #TopCityPerfect
