Medal Monday! Mein fünfter #hermannslauf2024! Mal wieder super organisiert, soooo viele helfende Hände, tausend Dank dafür! Oerlinghausen war mal wieder da Highlight des Laufes, ihr seid unglaublich! Trotzdem muss ich sagen, dass das Event mit 7000(!) Läufern und 1000 Wanderern an die Grenzen gekommen ist. Der erste km bestand quasi nur aus Stau. Bis zum Zieleinlauf gibt es immer jemanden, der einem direkt vor der Nase herläuft. Bei den Gefällen und Streckenbeschaffenheit ist das schon schwierig. Man kann sich nur noch sehr selten auf die wunderschöne Landschaft konzentrieren. Ich erinnere mich sehr gerne an den einzigen Hermann im Oktober 2021, wo nur ca. 2500 Läufer/innen teilnahmen, das war sehr entspannt! The face of someone who went on a casual jog for the first time since the @londonmarathon and the sun came out for it!😄😎 That first one back is always a bit of a tester to see how the legs are, but it just brings so much joy at the simple process of running for the love of running.🫶 This week will involve a few short, easy runs, whenever I feel like it and nothing more. Top tip: Do NOT rush back to training after a marathon. Ela estava em porto alegre para mostrar a força da equipe feminina da @renatommaia , de quebra precisava reafirmar sua própria força, uma força gigante, de alguém que não desiste nunca! Atleta disciplinada, ela até diz que treina pouco ou até não treina para as provas. Seu treinador, @renatommaia morre de rir pois bem sabe ele, ser isso um exercício de modéstia. @lilian_ssa é a melhor, é the best, é fera e tem jeito e cheiro de rainha. Escrevendo com letras douradas seu nome pelas ruas de Porto Alegre, ontem foi a vez da maratona New balance de porto alegre conhecer o jeito desta 'bailarina' elegante, mostrar sua coreografia vitoriosa pelas ruas desta cidade acolhedora. Três horas e vinte nove minutos de pura energia, determinação e beleza. @haspamarathonhamburg Klappe, die 4.🏅 * Wollte ich mal Bestzeit machen? Jo. Hat es geklappt? Nope. War es klar? Ja man😂 Bin ich jetzt enttäuscht? NEIN MAN!! * Beschwerde an Herrn Pflieger geht trotzdem raus😂 * Selbst topfit ohne Trainingsausfall, es wäre für mich viel zu warm gewesen. Ich hab nach 2km schon das Tempo reduziert (Wade und einfach nein😂). Das war ein unfassbar zäher und anstrengender Lauf, der nicht enden wollte. Da dachte ich, alle 5km langsamer werden ist ja auch was. Ich habe noch nie jede VP mitgenommen, dieses Mal schon und in aller Ruhe mein Wasser geschlürft. @todde_1976 hatte das nicht leicht mit mir gestern, hat noch tapferer durchgehalten als ich #imsorry ❤️😂 * Das Publikum war so großartig, die Strecke war gesäumt mit Menschen, die alles gegeben haben. Aber nicht mal das konnte mich richtig motivieren. Ich war einfach energielos. * Aber☝🏼ich bin gesund im Ziel angekommen! Und mal ehrlich, schlecht ist die Zeit trotzdem nicht! Wenn ich gesehen habe, wie viele an der Strecke versorgt werden mussten, nicht mehr konnten, Krämpfe hatten. Ich hoffe, es geht allen wieder gut! * Insgesamt hatte ich ein fantastisches Wochenende! Danke @maddi_fee für den Unterschlupf!😘 Alle #lauflotsen getroffen, im Ziel war der Quälkram direkt vergessen (ok nachdem ich auf Klo war💩😂) und auch die Zeit nach dem Rennen war so schön, ich war wirklich rundum zufrieden❤️ * Ich freu mich riesig für alle, die es geschafft haben und vor allem für die, die ihre Bestzeit knacken konnten, das kann ich neidlos anerkennen!🫶🏼 Ganz besonders freu ich mich aber für @run_jachi_run 🔥 * Und für die anderen: Seid bitte alle stolz auf euch! Ballarat Marathon #medalmonday . I always come away with a complete sense of awe at what so many people are able to achieve - from the everyday recreational runners to the elites 👑 . I *only* ran the half. I tried to run it at a pace I could sustain because I knew my training had not been great. I just couldn’t get focused on training - I knew what I should be doing but just couldn’t put the effort in. I think it has something to do with not loving the distance, and therefore lacking the focus … . I had a great run though. I achieved what I set out to achieve, ran consistently with a negative split for the second half and some strong kms to finish. It was still a grind because to be frank, I am old and tired 😊 . I am in awe of so many, especially the marathoners and those who are out there for so long, slogging out the kms. I also don’t know how you run a course and then continue on to do another lap, especially with those hills!! I guess it’s all about mindset and true determination. It’s so inspiring! 🙌🏼 . My time was 2:08:57. It’s a long way off my PB but I think it’s one of the most enjoyable halfs I have run because I put no pressure on myself. I apparently came 3rd in my age group … there were only 10 in it! 😂 I have also pulled up feeling sorer than I ever have. Not sure what that’s about but it’s all good 🏃‍♀️ . I’m going to concentrate on the shorter stuff for a while. I love trying to smash out a fast 5km and would also love to get my 10 km time down. Other than that, I am always thankful to just keep running … . Well done to everyone for getting out there - you are all legends! . Thanks also to photographer extraordinaire @gary.zuccala for the first pic. I had a heads up as to where he would be positioned but thought I would probably miss him as I typically run with my head down … and my brain also turns off. ᵂᵉʳᵇᵘⁿᵍ Hamburg, ganz viel Liebe für dich und die tollen Menschen, die diesen Lauf zu etwas so Besonderem gemacht haben 💙. Heute möchte ich gar nicht so viel schreiben, ich habe stattdessen ein paar Videos hier hochgeladen, die ich während des Laufs gemacht habe. Dann waren da noch die Kinder, die Blümchen verteilt haben und die vielen persönlichen Zurufe. Plus natürlich alle Helferlein, die den ganzen Tag lang alles dafür geben, dass die Marathonis und Halbmarathonis einen unvergesslichen Tag haben. Es war MEGA, und ich wäre auch noch weiter gelaufen, aber nach 42km war die Party leider vorbei. Jetzt habe ich doch mehr geschrieben als geplant. Cap City Half Recap (part 2 of 2) Is this not the biggest medal you’ve ever seen? It’s bigger than my palm. Now for some things I think I did well: - Late race pacing. Once I got to mile 8 i found someone running my pace and secretely followed her to the end. We still had to weave a bit but it was really helpful to have someone going a similar pace I could just focus on staying close to. - Utilized water stops. Even from the beginning i was using all the water stops to pour water on myself to cool down. I am a heavy, salty sweater. I usually like avoiding the stops when I can but i didnt have that luxury with these temps sadly, even with my handheld bottle. honestly i was disappointed with how few there were and i was so thirsty the whole second half. - Mentality..felt like i did okay with the mental game until the last couple miles when i was cursing at all the random hills and direct sun. But i didnt feel nervous about this race and felt like i made the most of things. Stayed pretty even keel the whole time. - Fueling. I ate a good breakfast, had coffee, took salt tablets before the race as preventative measure, drank gatorade, got lots of carbs in beforehand, didn’t have any stomach issues. I think I did everything I could with my fueling. Overall, i think the race went okay given the conditions. I hate blaming a bad day on the weather but i do think it made a huge difference for me not having any heat training. At least I can look at it as a valuable training run and start thinking about the next race. Onward! 👊🏻

Cap City Half Recap (Pt 1 of 2) Honestly it was pretty miserable.😂 I made several mistakes but I think I did a few things right too. Ill start with mistakes: - I can’t say I was ready or prepared for any version of a hot half marathon with lots of sun but that’s what this was. I don’t think I could change much though—how can you prepare for heat when training in ohio winter? - I didn’t have enough water. I ran out of water from my handheld bottle half way through the race and felt super dehydrated the whole second half. But the only fix I can think of there is taking time to stop at an aid station and have them fill my whole bottle, which may have been worth the minute - I started in the wrong corral…Funny story, I actually signed up for this race 3 years ago and had to defer it multiple yesrs in a row for various reasons. So, when i signed up in 2021 my times were slower and i totally forgot Id be in the corral i had from my original signup. I didn’t realize this until we already started the race when the amount of weaving I had to do wasn’t normal. - Weaving. Continued from above but this took a lot of extra physical and mental energy (had .2 worth of extra mileage). I felt like I was constantly running around people until i hit mile 9 or so and then was able to stay in a more consistent spot. I started in corral E and am normally in A, and the staggered start didn’t help either. - Pacing. Honestly it was okay given the circumstances, but normally in races i try to rarely look at my watch and run by feel/with people around me. But because i spent the first 9 miles passing people it made it hard to gauge my pace. Passing people made me feel like I was pushing too hard, but whenever I looked down at my watch I realized I was actually going too slow. I didn’t realize how big of a difference the corral placement would be for me.

WELL DAMN IT…. This is the most fun I have had in a race in long time…. I was on course for under 12 hours for 50 miles…. The nutrition was on point…. The pain was normal… I was in high spirits… I was in first place for females…. All that came to stop 🛑 about miles 36.8…. The torrential rain, lighting and thunder started in…. I was going to put my head down and just walk through it… the lighting was close for long time… I found Matt and we tried to wait it out… that wasn’t working but neither of us had phone service so I suggested walking until we get service…. The dirt roads were flooding so we walked in the highest point…. The rain was hard…. People started catching up with us…. Then BOOM 💥 the hail came hard and fast…. We all scattered for cover… I found a ditch and Matt and two others were closer to hay bails that I could not see in the rain…. That was the longest minutes of my life… marble sized hail pelleting me… I was only in a tank and shorts… I was scared they would get bigger… it cleared up a bit but then the roads were wading through water and it was cold 🥶 by this time it was cold with the wind and still raining, Matt and I couldn’t stop shivering… all our muscles cramped up… we finally get signal about 37.5 miles and call Bryan Pate to save us… thank you Brian Scantlin and Tawnisha Scantlin coming out immediately when they heard runners were in trouble… hands 🙌 down the best areas in the biz…. STRENGTH TRAINING BENEFITS FOR RUNNERS: what if I told you that adding a few short sessions per week of strength training to your overall training load would improve your running economy and efficiency, improve your time exhaustion when running, improve your neuromuscular coordination, can reduce your injury risk, and generally make you a better, faster, stronger runner? Nevermind the HEALTH benefits of strength training too! PMID: 29023328 PMID: 30131332 PMID: 23914932 PMID: 18460997 PMID: 35878109 PMID: 27135468 "The addition of two to three [Strength Training] sessions per week, which include a variety of ST modalities are likely to provide benefits to the performance of middle- and long-distance runners." PMID: 29249083 "Maximal or explosive strength training performed concurrently with endurance training was more effective in improving strength and neuromuscular performance and in enhancing vVO2max [& running economy] in recreational endurance runners than concurrent circuit and endurance training." PMID: 20432192 Strength for runners is meant to support your running; sessions might be 20-30 minutes total, performed in a controlled manner with plenty of rest between sets and different exercises, focusing on lower body and core muscles. You don't need to do very high reps or turn your strength training into a circuit-style cardio workout either (& in fact, those might be a less beneficial kind of strength for runners). Most exercises should be done in the range of 8-12 reps, and should be sufficiently challenging or heavy enough! Avoid strength the day before your workouts or long runs; typically we keep "hard days hard" which means including strength on running days that are also hard or harder (avoiding strength on dedicated rest or recovery days).
