It’s been AGES since i went to @waiyeehong and we were overdue on a few essentials so i thought I’d share my haul with you! Wai Yee Hong is an Asian supermarket - it’s probably the biggest in Bristol and they have a great selection of instant noodles so you know it’s my happy place! 🍜 Here’s what we got: - Okonomiyaki sauce - GOAT Kewpie mayo - Gochugaru (Korean chilli flakes for making kimchi and other Korean dishes!) - Hi Chew, my fave chewy sweets. Think chewits but better! - A selection of new to me instant ramen to try (watch out for those on the blog in future!) - Spring onions (essentials) - New wooden chopsticks for eating and cooking - Laksa paste - Nasi Goreng paste - Garlic powder - Fish sauce - Kimchi (to tide us over until our home made stuff is ready) - Sushi ginger - Rice cakes to make tteokbokki and other yummy things - Gim (seaweed sheets) - OG Lao Gan Ma crispy chilli oil (a small one as the big jars now require remortgaging to afford 😢) - Sesame seeds, black and white - BOGOF soy jerky type snacks, had to! - Golden curry blocks, hot for us, mild for the boy. This lot cost us £70. It feels expensive and imports are definitely more costly than they used to be but we stocked up on some bits we don’t buy that often and thanks to our gifted @freshasia_official dumplings last week, we didn’t need to buy any today although they sell a huge range of them there! New nautilus bowl 🍜 I started my pottery journey last year because I only had one bowl at home and wanted to make my own larger ramen bowl. While this isn't a typical ramen bowl shape, I'm really happy with how it turned out ☺️ This was my second attempt - the first one was on a porcelain clay, which I trimmed super thin, causing it to collapse from all the extra water the slip added. Will continue experimenting with this technique on other forms and glazes and try plating some proper food... I went to Korea with my cousin from end of March to early April. One of the first places that my cousin and I went to was the Ramyun Library located in the CU in Hongdae. If I bought more than 5 packs, then I would get 50% off. So I took advantage of this and bought one of the more expensive noodz whilst there. "The MiSik" has never been on my radar before, but apparently it's fairly new (released at the end of 2021). This specific nood was released just this year in March 2024. This "artisan ramyun" comes with noods, dried veggies, and a spicy paste (instead of powder like most other companies). The company boasts on their packet that their broth has been made with ingredients, simmered for 20 hours. The spicy paste is said to have flavours of peperocino, Vietnamese pepper, bhubat jolokia, and habanero. The noods were definitely delicious and definitely had a kick to it (which helped me sweat some stuff out due to my cold). However, I think I've started to notice (for my personal taste) that if the beef broth is too strong in an instant noodle, the less that I like it (e.g. Shin Ramyun Black). Who knew my first post would be instant ramen 🍜✨ I’ve been recently working overtime after making this account, so I haven’t had the time to film— let alone actually cook! Might as well share what I also eat when fatigued, low on money, and in a time crunch. This one isn’t healthy to eat all the time, but once in awhile isn’t going to kill me 😂. If you love salt and pepper, you’ll love this Spam Gomtang Ramen 🍜. Ingredients: • One pack Gomtang • Low sodium spam (Gomtang broth is already salty) • One soft boiled egg How to make: • Soft boil an egg: heat water in a pot on the stove till it boils, gently add the egg in the pot using a spoon, and let it boil for only 6 minutes. Let the egg rest and cool in an ice bath while you make ramen. • Find a very large microwaveable bowl. I mean, really large, these packs are huge, and you’ll see why you need a big bowl in the next step. Pour the Gomtang powder soup base in the bowl, and place the noodles on top. • Add hot water to the bowl. Reach into your soul to find the right amount of hot water to add. The only advice I offer is to leave an inch from the top to let the water have space to boil, but don’t put too much that you’ll think the water will dilute the broth too much. • Microwave ramen for 4min. • Cut however many slices of spam you want (I go for two and slice it in half to make four pieces, but this is up to you) • Fry the spam slices in a pan in medium to high heat until you see the spam caramelize. Don’t put the heat too high or oil will splatter on you too much (ouch!). • Peel the egg and place it in the ramen, and top with spam slices. Enjoy!
