They say every picture tells a story. That's also true of so many scientific instruments. Take this 1600s CE North African instrument. We know who made it from the engraved signature: "Praise be to God. The work-manship of {ain}Abdallâh b. Sâsî, may God forgive him and his father". This maker was born in Safi, South Morocco—one of the plates is engraved for 32° which is Safi's latitude. Known as 'the astronomer', he completed a book on astronomy in 1112 AH (c. 1700 CE). The date inscribed on the throne—1099—is most likely the date he made the astrolabe (c. 1687-88 CE). We can see he liked to add his own distinctive features—the small dotted circles on the rim marking the hours is unusual. And he included a feature to let the future owner make it their own. One of the plates is blank—it includes only the tropic and equator circles so anyone could personalise it to their own needs. Fasting - Fasting was a regular practice of Muhammad's life, not just during Ramadan. He would fast until Maghrib every Monday and Thursday and also on the 13th, 14th and 15th of each month. 4. Staying active- Prayer in itself is a form of exercise that requires movement of the body's muscles and joints. Prophet Muhammad SAW strongly encouraged physical exercise. 5. Drinking water - Do not drink water in one breath, but drink in two or three breaths. On This Day, 3 March 1924, the office of the Ottoman Caliphate was abolished by a decree of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. As part of Atatürk’s reforms after the Ottoman Empire was replaced by the Republic of Turkey, Abdulmejid II was removed from his position as the last Ottoman caliph. The Islamic Caliphate system began right after the Prophet of Islam passed away in 632 CE. Rashidun Caliphate was the first caliphate that ruled the Islamic world from 632 to 661 CE. After the fall of the Rashidun Caliphate, many dynasties took over the two holy cities of Islam and claimed their caliphal authority. The Ottoman dynasty was the last one, which claimed the caliphal authority since their victory over the Mamluks of Egypt led by Sultan Selim I in 1517. The Thunder / الرعد The 13th Chapter of the Qur’ān, named after a word in the 12th verse in which Allāh ﷻ explains how the lightning itself glorifies Allāh ﷻ, despite its apparent might and power in our eyes. I have found the explanation of natural phenomena in the Qur’ān very interesting and lightning is no different. Hāfidh ibn Kathīr, one of the most famous Mufassirūn in Islamic scholarship, brings forward a narration from ibn Abi Hātim in which it is mentioned that lightning is actually an angel created with four faces; one of a man, one of a bull, one of an eagle and one of a lion. The thunder and lightning we experience on Earth is caused by the particular movements of this angel whenever it moves around. Some may recognise this specific description as matching that of the Cherubim in Christian scriptures, revealing this to originate from Isra’illiyat narrations. Another Tafsīr, Imām Alūsi’s, mentions that lightning itself is not a conscious physical phenomenon, but a process managed and controlled by angels themselves and it is they who praise Allāh ﷻ even while handling such a powerful force. A third, even stranger interpretation, comes from the Tafsīr of lightning in Surah Baqarah, in a Hāshiya of Tafsīr Jalālayn but not the exegesis itself, is that lightning is a rock which is hurled at Shaytān from the heavens, who hides behind people in order to avoid being struck. Of course, many of these are theories which haven’t been confirmed in any manner, but I felt the conjectures were so interesting they deserved mention anyway. And Allāh ﷻ knows best!
