Elected officials, activists, and students congregated under the Queensboro bridge Friday morning to rally against the impending closure of a composting site near @nychagram Queensbridge Houses. Environmental nonprofit @bigreuse has operated the large-scale community composting site on a Parks Department lease since 2017. The lot was an illegal garbage site with 40 dumpsters of demolition and construction waste from a private contractor prior to the composting project, which went on to win the title of small scale composter of the year in 2020 from the US @compostingcouncil Now, Parks is looking to evict Big Reuse from the site by June 30. They plan to use it as a lot for agency parking and three large storage containers as their employees work to revamp the nearby Baby Queensbridge Park.

“I am a Modernist,” once said the late Morris Lapidus (1902– 2001), a native of Odesa, Ukraine, who is remembered as one of the world’s foremost hotel, commercial, and industrial architects. He specialized in the Mid-Century Modern and Neo-Baroque style, and is credited with the designs of over 1,000 buildings throughout his over 50-year career. His influence came to Rego Park, with the design of shops along 63rd Drive, when he worked with Ross-Frankel, Inc. as a retail architect. He held this position from 1928 to 1943, making his Rego Park project an early work. Ross-Frankel’s president and founder was Evan Frankel, a native of Austria who became a builder and designer in New York. Besides shops, the firm specialized in offices. Leonardo Nierman did not start as a painter. He started as a violinist. When he was not practicing the violin, he was studying subjects like business, mathematics, and physics, additionally also studying the psychology of color and form. By the time he had finished business school, however, his sights lay far beyond the STEM and economics fields. With the help of Social Realist painter David Alfaro Siqueiros, Nierman completed a mural for a wall at his business school. Eventually, he was painting more often than anything else, soon having his work shown in gallery exhibitions around the world. Nierman's Abstract Expressionist paintings exist in harmony with his education. His trained understanding of the emotional effects of color and music - particularly by composers like Debussy and Bach - influenced his work throughout his entire career. His paintings are fluid studies on light, sound, and emotion. Each piece uses rich jewel tones of color to evoke a sense of depth, mimicking the effect of endless galaxies and bottomless oceans.
