Όταν όμως το ξανακοίταξε είπε «για μισό λεπτό… δεν είναι κακό!» Άρχισε να στάζει το πινέλο του επίτηδες αυτή τη φορά, πήρε κι άλλο μουσαμά, πήρε τον κουβά, τον γύρισε ανάποδα, και άρχισε να ρίχνει σε στρώσεις την μπογιά. Όταν τελείωσε, κάθισε να το θαυμάσει! «Πρωτότυπο, θα θεωρηθεί Τέχνη, θα περάσω στην αιωνιότητα», σκεφτόταν. «Τζακ; Πάλι έπινες; Και χάλασες τόσους καμβάδες που πλήρωσα;» η φωνή της γυναίκας του τον έκανε να αναπηδήσει. «Λι μου, νηφάλιος είμαι». «Τι είναι αυτά που κάνεις;» «Επινόησα, μια νέα τεχνική, το dripping, δηλ, την τεχνική του «σταξίματος»! WILLEM GEHT AB (WILLEM LEAVES) by Georg Baselitz. Oil on canvas, 480 x 300 cm, 2014. Georg Baselitz donated six paintings and a sculpture dating from 2008 to 2017 to the Bavarian State Painting Collections in honor of HRH Duke Franz of Bavaria. These seven works offer an insight into Baselitz’s preoccupation with the issue of ‘late work’. With titles like PIET IN SHORTS (REMIX) and WILLEM LEAVES they provide a closer perspective on his artistic endeavours within the context of collective and individual memory; Piet referring to Piet Mondriaan an Willem to Willem de Kooning, who both profoundly inspired him. In AVIGNON ADE (the title combines the titles of two of his older pieces) and in the skull sculpture ZERO END Baselitz turns his focus to existential questions. They could be interpreted as poetic symbols of one’s own appearance, yet monumental manifestos of finitude. The semi-abstract figure is located upside down and has light colours on an almost black background. In the picture, the influence of Jackson Pollock’s action painting is noticeable. Particular attention is drawn to the fact that the human figure is vertically halved by an uneven black line that resembles a crack in an old tree and hints at the venerable age of the author of the picture. Thinking to Harry and Margaret Anderson (better known as Hunk and Moo) the legendary couple of art collectors from California, where at their ranch in Atherton, they built an incredible museum-caliber collection of modern art. Some of the masterpieces once displayed at the ranch are now part of the Anderson Collection at Stanford University (since 2014) following a pledge of 121 works from Harry, Margaret Anderson, and Mary Patricia “Putter” Anderson Pence (their daughter). In Photo 1 and 2, Moo and Hunk are photographed at the Anderson Collection at Stanford when they gifted the university with their works around 2015, they both died in 2018. 1) Moo and Hunk in front of one of their #MarkRothko; right, back a #LouiseNevelson sculpture. 2) next to #JacksonPollock’s Lucifer, 1947, once on the wall of their dining room (3). My neighbor across the hall was in the process of moving their final things out today and I could see she was stressed and having some challenges. I’d planned to spend the afternoon at the art studio experimenting with a new technique for some t-shirt design ideas or making frames for some of my paintings but instead I offered to help her with her remaining items. I put a bunch of things up for free for her on Nextdoor and some stuff for sale on Facebook. I got a message about an item and wound up needing to stick around the apartment for awhile to meet them when they arrived to pick it up. In the interim I decided to go for a walk and take in the beautiful afternoon weather while I waited. There’s this amazing tree lined street next to my house that’s brilliant for walking. All kinds of cool houses and tons of birds chirping away, very cool. As I was walking I started to think about my changed plans and how that was going to impact my day. I realized that it was kind of a relief. The process of creativity can be a scary act. It demands one enter into a landscape that has never been traveled before, dark, unknown terrain and generally foreboding. When one begins the creative act the entire world starts with them. There’s internalized preconceived judgements we’ve adopted from others over the years about our worth and value. Our perceptions of how the world will receive what we are about to make can weigh heavy on our minds even before we’ve begun the process! There is a necessary confrontation with our own self-worth and self-judgements when we begin to attempt to manifest this new idea. We are attempting to make something out of nothing and hope we can pull it off. There’s a quote attributed to John Cage about painting that I love. “When you start working, everybody is in your studio- the past, your friends, enemies, the art world, and above all, your own ideas- all are there. But as you continue painting, they start leaving, one by one, and you are left completely alone. Constantino Nivola 1911-1988 Good to finally meet you. Sardinian graphic designer, sculptor. Nivola’s meeting with Le Corbusier in 1946, was a defining moment. The cultural shock of exile & relocation to the USA initiated a phase of disorientation & doubt for many, but meeting Le Corbusier in particular, put an end to Nivola’s artistic uncertainties. He met dozens of fellow European artists & architects who had emigrated to escape Nazi persecution. Constantino met ‘Le Corbu’- the master of modernism just after Le Corb. arrived in NY. They were both members of an international team of architects in charge of designing the new United Nations HQ, and they began a friendship destined to last until Corbusier’s death in 1965. *colour watercolour of Ruth Guggenheim (jewellery designer) and Constantino Nivola’s house in Springs, a village in The Hamptons, has been featured in every classy interiors magazine. (Mural here by Le Corbusier, black sculpture by Nivola). A 1754 cottage, it was bought by the couple in 1948. * orange watercolour: Study for sculpture (Ruth & Claire in a striped dress), circa 1950. *beige watercolour: Study for sculpture (Bather), 1952. *pink poster: 1936-38, Nivola worked in Milan as a graphic designer for Olivetti. Thanks to Adriano Olivetti, everything to do with communication, product design and the architecture of Olivetti’s factories, was firmly based on artistic principles (see Carlo Scarpa’s 1958 Olivetti contribution in Venice 👐🏼) One of the first developers Olivetti’s image, Nivola produced posters & advertising campaigns which were extraordinarily innovative at the time. *spectacular Nivola mural at Olivetti New York. @museo_nivola, Orani, Sardinia.
