#120 Second Coming (1994)- The Stones Roses We can't talk about great Manchester bands without mentioning The Stone Roses. With The Happy Mondays, they were the face of the Madchester movement and opened the door for the Britpop movement. Their self-titled debut album is one of the greatest debut albums of all time & one of my favourites but we join the group for their follow-up, 'Second Coming'. This album came 5 years after the group's debut but would see the group split up shortly after in 1996. Tensions within the band have meant very little from The Stones Roses collectively since then with a brief reunion in 2010 with select gigs and a few singles up until they disbanded once again in 2019. In between this, songwriters Ian Brown & John Squire would work on separate projects. Brown as a solo artist & Squire as guitarist & songwriter with The Seahorses. Squire made a triumphant return with Liam Gallagher on a collaborative album this year & this seems to be a partnership with legs. As for the album, this doesn't hit the heights of the group's debut but that was always going to be a tall order. I'll always enjoy John Squire's guitar playing but I feel the tracks are slightly too long in places and blend into each other rather than stand out. 'Love Spreads', 'Begging You' & 'Ten Storey Love Song' being the tracks that do stand out more but certainly don't quite match the likes of 'Waterfall' or 'This is The One' etc. It isn't an unpleasant listen (besides 'Foz') but certainly a slightly disappointing follow-up. One of the first white indie groups to draw heavy influence from funk as well as disco and Latin percussion, the band were among the first to debut on Tony Wilson’s #factoryrecords in 1979 with „All Night Party,“ produced by #martinhannett Following late 1980s and early 1990s phases with A&M Records and Rob Gretton’s independent Robs Records, ACR were intermittently active. „Good Together“ was released in 1989. Wow! Can’t believe it has been 28 years to the day since the Oasis Maine Road gigs. I went on the Saturday night and still have such vivid memories from that whole weekend. They were on top of the world at that moment in time. They were riding high on the back of 1995’s release of ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory’ and were the undisputed kings of Britpop. I also attended one of their Knebworth gigs that year. Over two-and-a-half million people applied for tickets for Knebworth, meaning they could have sold out 18 shows in a row, but they only did the two in the end. Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy ‘supported’ them on the day we were there (not bad for a warm up), and many people (including Oasis) still say it was their last, truly great moment as a band. Their gig at Maine Road in Manchester was a massive deal for them, because it was seen as a homecoming – to their beloved Manchester City home ground. One of the things I really loved about both of those concerts, was that everyone was just there, in the moment. There were no smart phones, no social networks (am fully aware of the irony me posting this on here!) and no one wanted to document it. People were just ‘having it!’. Cast No Shadow, Hey Now! and Champagne Supernova were a few gems that really stood out for me. Such a brilliant time for music. So we drove to Manchester for the Friday night and did the return journey back to the SW circa 4-5 hours due to midnight road works! Madchester was a musical and cultural scene that developed in the English city of Manchester in the late 1980s, closely associated with the indie dance scene.Indie-dance (sometimes referred to as indie-rave ) saw artists merging indie music with elements of acid house, psychedelia and 1960s pop. Yootha Joyce Needham (20 August 1927 – 24 August 1980), known as Yootha Joyce, was an English actress best known for playing Mildred Roper opposite Brian Murphy in the sitcom Man About the House (1973–1976) and its spin-off George and Mildred (1976–1979). Yoothas image was used for the release of ‘Ask’ in 🇬🇧 🇳🇱 🇵🇹 🇺🇸 🇨🇦 🇪🇸 🇮🇹 🇸🇪 🇮🇪. Alternative sleeves for ‘Ask’ were used in 🇩🇪 using Cover Star 🌟 Colin Campbell & 🇦🇺 Using the 📸 of Jo Novak of Morrissey in front of the 🍭 👦🏼 Subway. 2 of the most popular alternative ‘Yootha’ Ask sleeves to collect are the ‘Darker’ Orange Dutch 🇳🇱 7” & the 🇪🇸 Spanish Black Font Sleeve. Yoothas image was also used for the cover of 🇩🇪 German release ‘Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others’ this was only released in Germany 🇩🇪 in 1986. And there was 5 versions to collect of this one 7” Promo Sleeve, 7” Standard Pressing, Orange vinyl with Blue Labels, Orange vinyl with Red Labels & Black vinyl with Red Labels. There is also a version of the sleeve that is misprinted which misses out Frankly, Mr. Shankly as a Tracklisting on the back cover.
