I have cast off my Jethro cardigan! All that is left is to weave in the ends, sew some buttons on and block it. I am loving the Jethro Cardigan by Tanis Lavallee. Using both knit and crochet to create this garment is a great way to combine 2 hobbies! Being able to create the granny squares on the go and then join them together after and add knitted sleeves really appeals! My yarn choice for this would be Fiori DK Merino Silk. The bold hand-dyed colours will really pop in this design and the silky merino will add gentle drape to the finished piece. I am definitely drawn to the colour palette she used too teal, turquoise and lime are my favourites! I sometimes wish I’d never learned the Italian / tubular/ sewn bind off, it’s so good that it’s spoiled all other rib bind-offs for me forever. This is the first time I’ve done it on a 2x2 instead of 1x1 rib, I first converted to 1x1 then skipped the double knitting set up rows and went straight into the sewing. Scrappy projects are fun. I like to just go for it, but saying I go truly no rules is a lie. Haha. I like to make parameters before I start a project just to bring in balance and create visual continuity, even if it looks like there is one. It seems counterintuitive to bring rules into chaos, but I’ve learned that a lot of my fav abstract artists work like this. If you pre-select and prepare your main materials and set some basic visual guidelines, it actually makes a scrappy project easier! In the case of the granny squares for my jethro cardigan I’m usuing all the same yarn brand - hedgehog is pretty iconic, I have a decent stash of leftovers. The dying and colour of the yarn has a certain sensibility that I find keeping it in the same brand AND base really helps visual continuity if you’ve got a lot of wild colour. I pre-wound a ton of double strand balls so I can just focus on the crochet when I have a chance to sit down and craft. I also decided, since my colours are all over the place, to repeat the same colours for the 3rd and 4th row. It kind of gives the eye a visual pattern which makes it a little more cohesive alll put together. So it’s scrappy, but works. These are my secrets. Haha. When it comes to making squares, I grab a colour, find it two friends that it works with and decide which is the middle, which is round 2&4 and which is round 3. I have a neutral speckly grey for the final round and trim which will give it a final bit of visual consistency. Hopefully it all works! 20 squares down! The JethroCardi by Tanis Lavallee is a "throw it on and run out the door" kinda cardi .... my favourite for spring, and like the author says in her pattern blurb, I'm not over granny sweaters! It's worked in a combination of crocheted granny squares (a great simple skill for inexperienced crocheters) and then the sleeves and ribbing are knitted, creating a really pretty, finished look. Jethro is designed with a DK weight yarn, so it's not too light, not too heavy ... perfect for variable spring weather. I'm inclined to make it with a springy merino wool, like Sandnes Garn Double Sunday, but it would be equally awesome made with a blend like Berroco Vintage Baby and Berroco Vintage DK (which can be used interchangeably). I have made (and woven all the ends in) the 36 grannies and I am ready to start joining them using my main blue color. I have made several projects with @berrocoyarn Vintage DK and have quite a bit in my stash left over. So, that’s what I am using for this project. My main color will be a Cerulean blue that didn’t make it into the Rozeta blanket I finished a while ago. I think I’ll save the layout planning for a day I have off from work this week. The JethroCardi by Tanis Lavallee is a "throw it on and run out the door" kinda cardi .... my favourite for spring, and like the author says in her pattern blurb, I'm not over granny sweaters! It's worked in a combination of crocheted granny squares (a great simple skill for inexperienced crocheters) and then the sleeves and ribbing are knitted, creating a really pretty, finished look. Jethro is designed with a DK weight yarn, so it's not too light, not too heavy ... perfect for variable spring weather. I'm inclined to make it with a springy merino wool, like Sandnes Garn Double Sunday, but it would be equally awesome made with a blend like Berroco Vintage Baby and Berroco Vintage DK (which can be used interchangeably). All the vertical seams are done! Now it is just the horizontal seams and then picking up stitches to knit. Ok, the one on the left is with 3.5mm hook and the one on the right is 3.25mm. I got within a mm or two to gauge with the smaller hook, so that’s what I’m going with. I will be using the join as you go method, so I used the gauge for a finished square with 4 rnds + joining rnd, because I have 5 rnds right now and joining will add the 6th. #tfacrochetkal #knitcrochet #grannysquare #grannysquaresweater #jethrocardigan
Well, one square complete, except for joining round and it is .5” too big…so my question is do I want my back to measure 26.25” across and 21” long (without ribbing) or do I do one round less on the squares and have the back measurements of 22.75” across and 19” long?? Making progress on my #jethrocardigan by @tanisfiberarts I love how my solid granny squares look all together. I used worsted weight with a 5.5 mm hook and I am following the size 3 instructions. Can’t wait to finish this. It will be perfect to cuddle into and drink coffee in the morning by sun.
My first granny square (ever).. not quite square but I think workable! I’m making the smallest size of the #jethrocardigan but I thought these would be bigger? Maybe I’m a tight crocheter 🤷🏻♀️. No idea since I never crochet. It is just shy of 2 1/2” (6cm). #tfacrochetkal #grannysquare
