Join us for a screening of “Blue and White Porcelain,” an episode from the documentary series Wonder of China tomorrow, April 30 at 12:00 pm EST. Learn more about the history of the iconic blue-on-white ceramic style that has been admired, collected, and copied for centuries. Follow artists Lu Lyujun, Ye Jianxin, and Liao Zhidan as they demonstrate their own approaches to this art form, drawing from both centuries-old traditional methods and contemporary innovations. The episode concludes with a consideration of the classic art form in unconventional artistic settings, such as architectural design and fashion. The Wonder of China series was produced by the China Broad View Cultural Communication Center in Beijing. This episode runs for 30 minutes and is captioned in English. Kyungmi Shin: A Story to Finding Us continues the artist's explorations of the historical narratives embedded in painting and ceramic practices flowing between the East and West. For this unique exhibition, Shin selected works from the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts’ Chinese ceramics collection. Her investigations explore the historical, cultural, and global implications surrounding the commercialization, distribution, and subsequent appropriation of Chinese designs and techniques (chinoiserie). By contrasting these objects with her collaged paintings and chinoiserie-inspired creations, Shin expands upon her previous bodies of work that challenge prevailing narratives about colonization, global economic practices, identity, and immigration. The artist uses her works to assert the importance of recounting and celebrating stories that represent the perseverance of the Asian Diaspora. Kyungmi Shin: A Story to Finding Us recognizes the difficulties that emerge as a result of searching for one’s personal and cultural histories. Yet, it also reveals that such an enterprise is, ultimately, a journey of self-exploration, transformation, and resilience. ~the LORD of ADHD (extended edition)~ ink, ballpoint pen, graphite, gouache, acrylic, wax pastel, executive dysfunction, and a mental breakdown on paper - this did not start out as LOTR fan art. This is a bunch of markmaking that I made on a big piece of paper as a coping strategy after having a severe mental health moment last year. It wasn’t really meant as a piece of art, but I kept it because it felt important. Shortly after, I began a path of discovery toward realizing that I am autistic (as well as having ADHD which I already knew but had only recently begun really diving into a deeper awareness of neurodivergence). - My studio practice started getting a lot weirder after that. I started exploring ways of making art that felt better to my body, less perfectionist, and involving themes of comfort and nostalgia that were like a love letter to the nerdy, obsessive kid that felt so alone and unseen back in the 90s and early 2000s. And I again found this paper full of intensely emotional markmaking, started making more, and somehow it became an allegory for overcoming my own demons in the form of a LOTR reference. So there ya go. - I’m still figuring out what it all means and how to build an art practice out of it. It’s vulnerable as hell, and it’s going to be a lifetime of continuous growth. It is clinically proven to have a powerful impact on physical, emotional, and social well-being. Understanding the humor of a given culture can also help to define its values and beliefs. The advent of readily accessible — and inexpensive — printing techniques facilitated the widespread expression of humor in the visual arts. Since the late nineteenth century, several art movements, such as surrealism and funk art, have incorporated humor. The postmodern period of the late 1960s to the present has contributed a wealth of humor to the visual arts, expressed through outlets ranging from traditional media to memes. Jim Carter is a retired physician who had a clinical practice of Internal Medicine in Kalamazoo for 36 years, also serving as an Associate Professor for Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and Program Director of Internal Medicine for MSU-Kalamazoo Center Medical Studies. He has been involved with the KIA for over four decades as a photography student, board member, board president, and docent. His major area of interest is the intersection of art with medicine. Our upcoming exhibit is one you won't want to miss! The opening reception of "Never Wake a Sleeping Baby" by working artist and full-time KVCC professor, Beth Purdy, will occur on Friday, April 5th from 5:30-8 p.m. The sleeping baby series is a mixed media body of work using collage paper and oil paint. Purdy's goal was to represent as many different genders and ethnicities as possible, and hopefully illustrate that the precious love of our own babies is universal.
