Malnutrition affects child brain development and malnourished children do less well in school. The first 1000 days are crucial for the future of a child. Malnutrition is the underlying cause of 45% deaths in children under 5. Mt Sinabung had a deadly eruption on the island of Sumatra few days ago, covered villages in ash. Ash was spewed up 2km into the air. The 1884 eruption of Krakatoa in the Sunda Strait was one of the deadliest and most destructive volcanic events. 70% of the island was destroyed, 36 417 deaths, 20 Million tons of sulfur released, and explosions were heard in Australia. It is said the explosion was a source of inspiration for Edward Munch’s the Scream. The word Batik is Javanese origin. Wax resist dyeing of fabric is an ancient art form. It already existed in Egypt in the 4th Century BC, where it was used to wrap Mummies. In Asia, the technique was practised in China during the Tang Dynasty, in India and Japan during the Nara period. The art of Batik is most highly developed in the island of Java. Batik is a technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to the whole cloth. Batik craftswomen draw intricate patterns using canting and wax that are kept hot and liquid in a heated small pan. After the cloth is dry, the resist is removed by boiling or scraping the cloth. The areas treated with resist keep their original colour; when the resist is removed the contrast between the dyed and I dyed areas forms the pattern. This process is repeated as many times as the number of colours desired. In Europe, the technique was described for the first time in the “History of Java” published in London in 1817 by Stamford Raffles, who had been a British governor for Bengkulu, Sumatra. On the dawn of Oct 1, 1965, 6 Indonesian army generals were arrested and assassinated. The September 30 Coup remains a dark and unsolved mystery in the history of Indonesia. Following this bloody Coup, Maj.General Suharto took control of the army. In early October 1965 and following the discovery of public burial of the General corpses, a military propaganda campaign began to sweep the country, successfully convincing both Indonesian and international audiences that it was a Communist Coup. Jos, 27 months old, Pregita’s brother. He was underweight so Trisya drove him together with his sister to the Puskesmas. Both parents were working in the rice field when their children were brought to the Puskesmas. Jos and Pregita were covered with BPJS, universal health coverage so the family did not need to pay the visits to Puskesmas. Each Posyandu in the country aims to weigh all children between birth and 3 years of age. Each child has a personalised booklet which includes a chart where the Posyandu volunteers mark the weight recorded each month. If growth is normal, the upward trajectory is clearly shown on the chart.
