Spent yesterday at Islanding Singapura: Reclaiming the Nationโ€™s Maritime Heritages! This was a day-long NUS workshop, all about SG's offshore islands & the sea-dwelling peoples linked to our land, pre-dating both our modern city & our nation-state: Hamzah Muzaini, the organiser, gave us a brief intro, talking about his NHB-funded research into the heritage of SG's 44 islands (there used to be 60 before crazy reclamation). Awful lot of cool stuff still around: the foundations of the demolished opium treatment centre on St John's Island; a Chinese tomb on Lazarus Island; a military lookout point on Pulau Biola (which they'd thought was uninhabited!); WW2 ruins on Pulau Sejahat (which we can't visit cos it's part of Pulau Tekong's military base). Photographic archives reveal what's lost, e.g. trolley track & disinfection station at the jetty of St John'sโ€”but what's more important is talking to surviving islanders who remember life before they were resettled. Urgent work, cos the government won't stop w its nutty land redevelopment projects, e.g. the Greater Southern Waterfront; Long Island off the east coast. Cynthia Chou's "The Watery World" looked specifically at the Orang Suku Lautโ€”i.e. the *tribal* people of the sea, a term she's using instead of "Orang Laut" to differentiate them refugees & other non-nomadic peoples. She's studied their lives in Riau, coming to understand how their community networks span vast expanses of space; how they see life as a continuous itinerary of movement w/o beginning or end, but in constant birth (even in death, there's still contact w spirits, sharing of food & cigarettes at graves). How their boats are like their own children (they rear them, feed them, cast spells over them), w their dimensions mapped onto the sacred sialang tree & the human body. & how modernity exerts pressures on them to become citizens of states respecting national boundaries; how SG-Johor-Riau 1989 Growth Triangle disenfranchises their territories, w rich SGans buy boathouses on their harbours & sand mining companies take their sand. How too often, environmentalists speak about an oceanic ecosystem that doesn't include humans like them. TBC below!

๐Ÿงก๐ŸคŸ๐Ÿผhey bookfam! Double posting today โœŒ๐Ÿผbecause I need to tell you about this debut Middle Grade that I will be buying this for my own shelves! WOWOW!! Recently published, Middle Grade debut โ€œThe Songbird and the Rambutan Treeโ€ blew my expectations out of the water. This story should be part of primary school curriculums and winning kid lit book awards! ESPECIALLY since itโ€™s strongly grounded in the authorโ€™s grandmotherโ€™s personal experiences and discusses the history of a lesser known part of the world (Java/Indonesia). Please read the authorโ€™s note at the end!! What to expect: - Friendships between the social classes - Lush descriptions of the setting in Batavia and mouthwatering descriptions of dishes - WW2 in Eastern Asia & deadly Japanese POW camps - Parent/child relationships - Courage in the midst of great danger & suspenseful moments - Reclaiming identity - โ€œIndigenousโ€ compared to a โ€œlocalโ€ I wonโ€™t give much away but I think this should be required reading for everyone. Great book for discussion with older kids! *Thank you to NetGalley and Flux for an Advanced Readerโ€™s E-copy. "Uncover the fascinating history of Samudra-Pasai! In the 13th century, Indian Islamic traders established thriving ports in Sumatra, connecting the East and West. The Kingdom of Samudra-Pasai emerged, minting gold coins like the "Mas" and "Kupang". But with the Portuguese arrival in 1510, trade shifted to Acheh, and Samudra-Pasai's importance declined. Despite this, their legacy lives on in these precious coins, a testament to their rich cultural heritage! #Sultan Muhammad (1297-1326) #collection of the Tac Numismatic Enterprise (TAC24-00038) #samudrapasai #indonesianhistory #ancientcoins #goldcoins #numismatics

In 1950, Indonesian President Ir Soekarno made a significant visit to a trade fair showcasing industrial products. Among the many exhibits, he took particular interest in the Maico Mobile stand, where he laid eyes on the innovative Maico Mobil MB 150. This moment marked not only a display of technological curiosity but also symbolized Indonesia's burgeoning engagement with industrial progress. Soekarno's visit underscored the importance of fostering relationships with international manufacturers and embracing advancements in automotive technology, reflecting a broader vision for Indonesia's economic development and modernization efforts during the early years of its independence. #IndonesianHistory #IrSoekarno #MaicoMobile #IndustrialProgress #TradeFair #MB150 #AutomotiveTechnology #EconomicDevelopment #Modernization #1950s

History, women and Asia. Untold stories. Untold personal histories until now. Met Daryl Yeap, banker turned author whose 2nd book, As Equals chronicles the three remarkable women surnamed Oei hailing from Java. Oei Huilan, Lucy Hoo Oei and Ida Oei Yeap. These women and their stories span 100 years and sheds light on the important Chinese families in Java, Malaya and Singapore. I had just come back from a holiday in Jogjakarta so it piqued my interest. Thankfully Harriet informed me of the book talk which honestly wasnโ€™t well publicised. It should have generated a far bigger crowd given the wonderful adventures of the Oei women as recorded by Daryl. She laughingly says that her publisher calls it creative non-fiction as it is woven from factual information and years of research about the women who originate from Asiaโ€™s richest man, Oei Tiong Ham. Personal histories are precious. It gives us a sense of who we are and a glimpse of who our ancestors are and what they did to survive. I have often thought about writing personal history, if nothing it is a record that I wouldnโ€™t be here if it were not for the men and women who left China. What do you think? Do you know Mount Krakatoa? Ancient Krakatoa (Grandma Krakatoa) Long before Krakatoa (1883), there was a mountain called Mount Batuwara (ancient Krakatoa) with a height of 2,100 meters. Mount Batuwara (ancient Krakatoa) is located in the middle between Java Island and Sumatra Island in Indonesia. When Mount Batuwara erupted, it caused the split of the island of Java and the island of Sumatra and eruption created the year 536 AD, the dark one. Mount Batuwara disappeared and the former mountain created a strait called the Sunda Strait and one mountain with 3 craters, namely Mount Krakatoa. Krakatoa (1883) (Mother of Krakatoa) The mountain with a height of 813 meters has 3 large craters but they are not combined, but are like 3 mountains. Why is it called Mount Krakatoa even though there are 3 mountains? Because the 3 craters were created by 1 magma chamber. The three craters are named Danan, Perbuwatan, and Rakata. On August 26-27 1883, a large eruption occurred. The first eruption on August 26, 1883, occurred in the Perbuwatan crater, followed by the Rakata crater and the Danan crater. The mountain landslide caused 2 tsunamis with heights of 43 and 48 meters. On August 27, 1883, the Krakatoa magma chamber was empty, empty if you know. You can imagine how big the eruption was, even the sound could be heard as far away as the Rodrigues Islands and Sri Lanka. The ash even turns the moon blue and causes massive global climate change. The mountain's magma chamber is empty and that means the landslide is getting bigger and the creation of hot clouds/pyroclastic flow and spread to the outskirts of Lampung and Banten. After the eruption, 3/4 of the mountain disappeared. 36,743 people died and some of their bodies were carried by sea currents to Africa Krakatoa now (Son of Krakatoa) The former eruption created a new small mountain called Anak Krakatau/Son of Krakatoa. urrently the mountain is 113 meters high and is still active, STILL ACTIVE. Remember! still active! #krakatoa #indonesianhistory #volcano #mountain #mountains #history #learn #learnabouthistory #learning #studyabouthistory #study #studying

After boarding possibly the most stunning train journey of my life, from Jakarta to Bandung, our adventure across Java had finally begun (the less said about Jakarta, the better)! We wanted to explore the most populated island on the planet, taking in some of the less touristic destinations, but also marvelling at the wonder of variety Java had to offer. The first couple of legs did not disappoint, with history and ruins abound. Our first stop off was at the city of Bandung, and after looks of disbelief from our hosts at our hostel, they managed to secure us a driver to the remote archaeological site of Gunung Padang. A mere 3 hour drive into the mountains, and we hiked up several hundred steps to view a site some believe to be the oldest signs of civilization. Whatever you believe, it is well over a thousand years old and was in one of the most beautiful, if remote locations I have ever been. We even met a lovely chap called Joe, a professor of Art History at Manchester Met... Our next stop was the vibrant historical city of Yogyakarta. A city that quickly became one of our favourites with character in abundance. The biggest treat being the two temple sites of Borobudur and Prambanan. Eye wateringly expensive, but an absolute treat of Buddhist and Hindu history. The photos simply can not do justice to the scale and majesty of the incredible sites. 1 & 2. Prambanan Temple. 3. Siwu Temple. 4 & 5. Taman Sari, Yogyakarta. 6 & 7. Borobudur Temple. 8, 9 & 10. Harvey (1977 by Cornell University)ย โ€จ๐Ÿท IDR. 2.500.000โ€จKondisi bekas masih sangat baikโ€จ.โ€จGenre: Politics โ€จ.โ€จSummary๐Ÿ“œโ€จWith the conclusion of Indonesiaโ€™s long and arduous struggle for independence most of its people believed there would be a rapid improvement of social and economic conditions. During the early years of independence some progress was made in this direction, most prominently in education, and for the time being at least Indonesian society did become somewhat more egalitarian than in the colonial period. But the degree of improvement fell far short of expectations, and disillusionment and frustration led increasingly to an understandable tendency to blame the central government in Jakarta for the inadequate measures taken to meet the expectations that had been aroused during the revolution. For several years, in Java as well as in the Outer Islands, disenchantment with the central government was moderated by the widely held belief that the first national democratic elections-finally actually held in 1955-56-could be counted upon to produce a genuinely representative government disposed to take, and capable of implementing, the decisive actions required to attain social and economic progress. But in fact the elections brought little change; cabinet membership was largely the same, the political parties no more disposed to cooperate with each other, and governmental capacity to bring about social and economic progress no greater than before. Once this became clear, dissatisfaction and criticism of the central government was no longer restrained and became more forcefully articulated and pointed. Especially was this so in the highly politically conscious areas of Sumatra and Sulawesi that felt slighted and discriminated against by what they perceived to be an increasingly Java-centric cast of national leadership in Jakarta. #readythriftboox

#nederlandsindie , #marineluchtvaartdienst , #Indie, #knil, #vliegtuigherkenning, #indonesianhistory , #nederlandseluchtvaart , #indoeuropean
