Art Tours Berlin on tour! 👀 ✈️ 🖼️ We recently had the chance to visit the outstanding exhibition “GREEN MACHINE - Die Dinge der Anderen” by Berlin-based artist Ben Gerber @ben_greber at @konschthal_esch The show runs through March 31st, so if you happen to be in #Luxembourg, you may still catch it over Easter weekend. Greber is a sort of a modern day archaeologist, digging up relics from a not so distant past - traces of the Industrial Revolution. His exhibitions are comprised of molds of casts of discarded industrial materials; the cavities of a windmill; ambiguous fragments that are encased, enclosed in stark, polished metal, on which clues to their previous lives are silkscreened in miniature, footnote form. The span of materials used - some accessible, quotidian ones such as paper, cardboard and wood - and others such as metal and epoxy - to illustrate such a diverse array of objects is captivating, to say the least. Greber is like a scientist, inviting us into his laboratory of memories, of a time that is no longer understood or grasped by current generations. Why Die Dinge der Anderen - ‘other people’s things’? Geber responds: “I don’t personally collect objects, I’m almost exclusively interested in other people’s things - objects that have been created by people. Technical objects, in particular, seem to be imbued with a special kind of honesty, They reveal a certain feeling, a poetry about how they were created, how they were used, needed, cherished, how they were forgotten and finally replaced. The fact that I am a stranger helps to intensify my perception of my surroundings (and the objects in them). #artinberlin #contemporaryart #kunsthalle #sculpture #metal #epoxyresin #industrial #berlinartist #collectart #konschthal #industrialartifacts #archaeology #contemporary #contemporaryarchaeology #arttoursberlin

Exhibition opening TEKTONIK by Titus Schade ‘TEKTONIK’ is Titus Schade’s first solo exhibition outside Germany. Through his work, the artist tackles painting and its visual space. Employing sets that resemble backstage areas, he creates spaces somewhere between models and scenography, devising a wide range of architectural structures and accessories that immerse the viewer in a private world. Schade does not seek to replicate reality, but uses a series of surrogate elements that he reorganises in his self-contained environments. His forms and structures, usually of an architectural nature, are subjected to baroque lighting set-ups. In his work, classical landscapes abut geometric forms whose timelessness allows for a universal reading. When? Friday 15 march from 6pm onwards in the presence of the artist. Opening programme: 7pm:  speeches 7h30pm > midnight: DJ set by DJ Donkel 📍 Free entrance We can't wait to see you 👋 . . . . #konschthal #konschthalesch #espacedartcontemporain #exhibition #artexhibition #contemporaryart #vernissage #opening #titusschade

DAS GROSSE DANACH, 2023 As a Gen Xer, Greber reflects on his own perceived ahistoricity, on what it means to stand beside history in the making. On being born into a world that has always functioned, but whose functioning cannot be fully grasped because its socio-economic processes, which are constructed and managed by a multitude of decision-makers and specialists, are too complex. For the end consumer, these infrastructures and processes must indeed remain immaterial and hidden. In this conflict-free Western European idyll, the COVID-19 pandemic was the first major personal disruption in many people’s lives. There was a before and there is an after. ‘Et in Arcadia ego’: even in our wonderful, thoroughly designed world, fear, suffering and death still exist. Greber playfully takes aim at the ‘crise de la quarantaine’ and invents a gigantic memento mori machine. He appropriates a profusion of classical vanitas symbols, which he combines with his own themes and working methods to create a daring collage. The empty pedestals bear witness to the disappearance and obsolescence of the things that surround us, while the burnt candles refer to the flowing of time, but also to the invisible parts of life’s processes, that which remains hidden. And so the conflict with the greatest historical caesura of all – the monstrous, incomprehensible industrial objectification and killing by the Nazi dictatorship – inevitably resurfaces. The result is both an aesthetically powerful, sprawling installation and a complex and stimulating commemorative machine in the venerable arthistorical tradition of still lifes. 📷 Photo by Christof Weber . . . . . #konschthal #konschthalesch #espacedartcontemporain #exhibition #artexhibition #contemporaryart #bengreber #greenmachine #contemporarysculpture #dasgrossedanach

For the video series Processions, Ben Greber and Dutch artist Bram Kuypers (b. 1989 in Arnhem) embark on a journey to various test tracks for high-speed transportation systems. The starting point is the Transrapid test site in Emsland, in northern Germany. The second part explores the former track of the Aérotrain in France. The artists’ exploration of these test systems for high-speed trains is based on their overarching interest in technological utopias of the industrial age. In the films, Ben Greber and Bram Kuypers approach the respective transportation systems and associated ideas of the future in different ways. Combining performative elements with panoramic shots of the landscapes, they create an atmosphere that is at times surreal.’ Marijke Lukowicz, ‘Forgotten Future’, 2022 (excerpt). 📷 Photo by Christof Weber . . . . . #konschthal #konschthalesch #espacedartcontemporain #exhibition #artexhibition #contemporaryart #bengreber #greenmachine #contemporarysculpture #processions

BEN GREBER (@ben_greber ) GREEN MACHINE Die Dinge der Anderen Until March 31st, 2024 @konschthal Go see this monumental and extremely carefully set-up & curated show by German artist Ben Greber. In order not to spoil too much of the `experience’ of the show I have carefully selected images that just give you a feeling of the morbid/uncanny world of Greber! Contrary to the age of industrialisation, the age of digitalisation is characterised by what the artist calls the ‘progressive de-objectification and invisibility of all processes relevant to life and society’. Greber documents this disappearance or intangibility, but without aiming to preserve or reproduce. While his sculptural works evoke the original form and function of the object, they gain autonomy through reduction and appear as self-contained works of art in the context of the exhibition. Besides important works from recent years, the exhibition shows a new, expansive installation with reference to the former „Terres Rouges“ steelworks in Esch-sur-Alzette. #bengreber #konschthalesch #konschthal #eschsuralzette #terresrouges #icicestesch #gillesontour

The new publication is out! Artists create works of art. Intuitions and thoughts are inscribed in their forms. Understood in this way, works are materialisations of what was previously immaterial. These move into exhibitions. Thoughts become visible in them. Catalogues are generally published to accompany them. This is the second time - after Gregor Schneider – that the Konschthal Esch has published a book instead of a catalogue to accompany an exhibition. The aim is to focus even more clearly on the artist's world of ideas behind the visible aspects of his works. For hardly any other artist of his generation does this form of publication seem more appropriate than for Ben Greber. After all, Greber is a melancholic ponderer who draws his art from the history of his family and his surroundings, thinking and reflecting. The background to his works is always overly complex. He never lets go of the fact that the candlestick in his teenage room was once an insulator on the fence of the Auschwitz concentration camp. It preoccupies him, haunts him as it were. He then gets to the bottom of this discovery, uncovers the history, strips the thing of its pure materiality. Raimund Stecker seeks to introduce a linear order into this sculptural, and therefore three-dimensional, complexity. Taking as his starting point the mysterious logic inside the number box in Dürer's Melencolia I, he sets out to stage the family imbroglios in which Greber finds himself woven, to tell them like a story. For Raimund Stecker, the result of his preoccupation with Ben Greber's art is unambiguous: it can only be understood as an essay, a set of thoughts extended in height and time, which must be 'read' visually! 👉🏻 Available at the Konschthal.

Evacuations (from 2018 onwards) marks the beginning of another series of works in which complex metal constructions (or ‘presentation architectures’) isolate and meticulously frame a series of casts of fragments. The precision and detail of the textures of the moulded volumes generate a poignant sense of realism, counterbalanced by the artist’s characteristic monochrome colour scheme. The frames create new sculptural volumes while simultaneously enhancing spectators’ sense of distance and commanding their attention. Figuration here returns in reduced, fragmentary quantity – and with a new narrative quality, as spectators sense that the artist’s explorations revolves around biographical elements. In other words, @ben_greber created figurative works, which he then disassembled and abstracted. In a long pendular movement between the opposing poles of figuration and abstraction, he now repeats this process (structuring/destructuring) as he delves into his own biography and addresses both generational and intergenerational conflicts and traumas. 📷 Photo by Christof Weber

Umspannwerk (DAS GROSSE DANACH) is an artist's edition of 50 copies by German artist @ben_greber (*1979). A specially produced box contains the new book with texts by art historian Raimund Stecker as well as two objects shaped as lemons. These objects are an extension of the new expansive installation Umspannwerk (DAS GROSSE DANACH), in which the artist has created a monumental memento mori machine. The lemon motif initially appears here as a contemporary party relic, but naturally also takes up the exotic tropical fruit motif of 17th century still life painting. As an artist's edition, it ultimately references the Capri battery by German artist Joseph Beuys, not without humour. The edition is a co-production of the Konschthal Esch on the occasion of the monographic exhibition Green Machine - Die Dinge der Anderen 2023. Tina Gillen deals with the spatial relationship between the body and the subject, presenting a direct reference to the gaze. In her paintings, the artist plays explicitly with the scale of the representation, using optical elements and even perspective to define a zone in which the gaze and the object of the representation meet. In Bird’s Eye (2013) or Time Travel II (2022), Gillen suspends gravity in favour of the visual experience: the perspective on the landscape (whether level or upside down), combined with the depth of the image, attests to a body at an altitude, in levitation. The gaze is confronted with the expanse of a landscape, with a point of view previously distanced in the construction of the image by the artist herself. This to-and-from movement, oscillating between physical proximity and distance of the gaze, is a phenomenon that is recurrent in the artist’s projects. Arctic Forecast II (2021) shows sharp white shapes in a diagonal, downward direction against a blue-gray background. Given the title, these abstract lines read like a schematic representation of cold wind currents over a map of the land, rather like a weather forecast on television. The composition is akin to an explosion: it has a dynamic and speed, built up in cold tones. The wetness and fluidity of the medium play a role in the formation of meaning. The layer of paint evolves as it descends, from thickly applied to almost translucent. Some elements are sharply delineated. White drops run downwards while the blue background shows only a sweeping field made with broad brush strokes. Image and medium intertwine and expand the viewing experience. Conceived in the continuity of her work with a refined scenography, Flying Mercury presents itself, after Tina Gillen’s participation in the 59th Venice Biennale, as a specific place of encounter between the artist and her work, making visible the extent of her pictorial research with a selection of some thirty works dating from the early 2000s to today. It is thus advisable to look back and to connect the different productions, to observe their singularity. There exists in Tina Gillen’s work an inexplicable, almost metaphysical content built on an intuition, a memory or a personal vision that ranks as “somewhere”. The artist succeeds in producing images that speak to her time, to her experience. Text by Charlotte Masse 📸 Photo by Christof Weber On display until 12.11.2023.
