Being outdoors is so vital for the children’s development and exposure to more environments, and since our school is far from any woodland areas, it was some children’s first time in such a vast open forest space, so part of their learning is understanding about etiquette in public nature reserves and how to take care of the trees/plants/minibeasts. Often children’s books about bodies or anything medical take quite a cold, remote, factual tone. They can be clinical (which is understandable), but lack warmth and personality. That means younger readers don’t engage beyond a cursory glance. Here’s a new book which definitely doesn’t fall into that trope. The Brilliant Brain: How It Works and How to Look After It @roopafarooki @violawangstudio @walkerbooksuk explores everything wonderful about the role our brains play. Centring personality and individuality, the book also gives information on how each part of the brain leads different senses and organs. I don’t like to put age recommendations on titles and this is a great example as to why; whilst the layout and language could pigeon hole this for younger readers, I think the tone and meaning here will work for those all the way through school. I found this one in my local @kentlibraries and Viola Wang’s illustrations drew me in. I’ve reviewed a couple of her other books which I adore (Rabbit Bright and Hello) so see those on my grid. Year one have had lots of fun in Science this week. Jiffy, a scientist had a problem - his lab coat had been ruined! Building on our material knowledge and knowledge about the word waterproof, we were set the challenge to identify the best material for jiffy testing if it was hard-wearing, warm to wear, thick enough and waterproof. After a Getting to Know You and orientation session the mini scientists are launched into group challenges such as making a water carrier, designing a beak which picks up food, creating the most intricate spider web, and using pneumatics to invent a snapping dinosaur! Day 2> Cool Creative Thinking! The creative thinkers compete with each other in engineering challenges to build the tallest tower, construct a strong bridge, build some balance scales, and explore the engineering abilities of our arachnid friends! The learning objective was to know the function of the skeleton and name some bones. So, we built a skeleton, discussed the functions and named some bones (their favourite if you’re interested is phalanges). Each follow on lesson, we review the giant skeleton on the wall so I can check we’ve retained it. That’s enough. They’ve done what I asked. They’ve achieved their learning. I took photos and popped them on Seesaw (some chose to upload themselves naming the bones). Did I ask them to write anything down? No. - some added post it notes after input. Did I ask them to label a diagram worksheet? No. - some of them went away and drew around their friend and labelled it with some of their new learning. I did my job- to teach. I provided resources in provision for them to extend their learning. Then I sat back and watched their learning pop up in different contexts. April Easter Holiday Science Camp 2024 - Week 1 - Science Blast! We became Mini Rocket Scientists and created our own aerodynamic arrow, hoop glider, and stomp rocket! Having constructed a helicopter blade, children discovered the science behind Da Vinci’s Catapult and try to save Eddy the Eggonaut from a sticky end by building safety drop zones! We played with perception of light and investigated its funky properties with our very own LED finger torch! Towards the end of the week we became an Astro Physicist, observed cool experiments, and made a light diffracting star and saw how a boomerang bounces back! We Are The Wibbly! by Sarah Tagholm Illustrated by Jane McGuinness AD | PR 🐸 Today is my stop on the #blogtour for We Are The Wibbly! for @kaleidoscopictours and @bloomsburychildrens. 🐸 Some books are made for being read aloud. This is one of them. 🐸 We Are The Wibbly is the story of frogspawn’s journey into frogs. Told from the point of view of one tadpole, it captures their reactions at each stage of their development – with hilarious results! Our chosen tadpole is not the first to change, and therefore sees what’s happening to their friends – and they are not sure they like it! 🐸 I absolutely LOVE the writing style. Our tadpole has a unique voice; our favourite lines have to be ‘Oh my crikeys! They is bursting out of the Wibbly…’ and ‘My friends is growing things out the side of them. I need things growing out the side of ME.’ You can really imagine how the tadpoles must feel going through these changes. The illustrations are spot on – the expressions are fantastic and each change is clear to see. 🐸 What’s brilliant about the book is that it manages to be both educational and humorous. Each step of a frog’s lifecycle is clear and there is lots of scope for discussion. I also really like how the book illustrates the dangers that the tadpoles face at each stage of their development, which is something I’d not really considered before. The ending is lovely and is a great way of reinforcing the cyclical nature of the journey from frogspawn to frog. 🐸 This is one of my favourite books of the year so far – it’s absolutely superb.
