Here is my imaginative interpretation of The Kunlun Mountains. I embrace the concept of a Hollow Earth, acknowledging that appearances can be deceiving, and our world is veiled in Maya. Grotto-heavens, traditionally linked with mountains, are depicted as hollows or caves situated in or on specific mountainous regions. The term "Kunlun Mountain" translates to "Cavernous Mountain," and the mythological Kunlun Mountain has been envisioned as a hollow mountain, positioned directly beneath the pole star. The various locations of Kunlun are considered in the various legends, myths, and semi-historical accounts in which Kunlun appears. These accounts usually describe Kunlun as the abode of various gods and goddesses, and legendary plants and mythical creatures may also be found there. 고도가 높아질수록 생장 가능한 식물의 종류는 (아마도) 적어질 텐데 꽤 높은 동네들에 유채가 여기저기 많이 보이는 걸 보면 유채는 이런 환경에서도 잘 자라는 듯ㅋ (유채는 중국어로도 그냥 油菜임ㅎㅎ) 요 이전 며칠은 계속 더 척박한 동네를 다녀서인지 이런 작물 경작의 모습을 보기가 힘들었는데 버스를 몇 시간 타고 이동하다 딱 보인 유채가 반가웠나 보다ㅋ 얼마 있지도 않은데 굳이 사진을 찍은 걸 보면 ^^;; 하지만 그 뒤로 한동안 계속, 훨씬 많이 보게 되는데...ㅎㅎ *이 유채밭은 대략 해발 3,100m

Hua Guo [花果山] Abstract landscape Acrylic mixed media painting 2021 18” x 24” | on wood Santa Cruz, Ca Many of my paintings are inspired by literature. This fantastical landscape is named after a place in the Chinese Classic, Journey to the West, a 16th century folk novel. Mount Hua Guo, the mountains of flowers and fruit, is where a stone monkey, Sun WuKong. was born. A quote from the book about the Monkey’s birth is inscribed on the back of the painting. This tale about a Monkey’s Journey to India to find the sacred scriptures that will save all humanity is particularly endearing to me, because my Chinese zodiac sign is Earth Monkey. I used my mixed media process of printing the base layer with a gelli press, painting layers on top with paint and acrylic inks. Final layers were completed with paint pens and glitter.
지난 6월부터 8월까지의 여행 사진들은 나의 끝장 게으름으로 초반부터 업로드 지연에 지연을 거듭하다가 언젠가부터는 아예 중단ㅠ 지금 잠시 떠올라서 찾아보니 7월초 사진을 두 달 늦은 9월초에 올린 걸 마지막으로 3개월 이상 잊고 있었네... ^^;; 다섯 달 지난 사진들을 굳이 올려야하나 하는 생각도 들고 과거에도 밀리고 밀리다 그냥 다 포기한 적이 이미 여러 번이기도 하고 어차피 이렇게 한다고 해도 내가 정했던 쿼터(?)를 채울 수는 없어 보이는데다 그마저도 몇 장이나 올리다 또 흐지부지될지 모르겠지만ㅠㅠ 암튼 그래도 일단 살짝 이어붙이기ㅋ ============================== 근데 한여름에 무더위를 피해서(?) 고도가 좀 있는 시원한 산동네에 갔던 건데 추워서 오들오들 떠는 시기에 올리려니 뭔가 좀... ^^;; 암튼 이 사진은 格尔木에서 香日德镇으로 향하는 버스에서 찍은 샷ㅋ 아~무 특징도 없는 평범한 사진인데 그냥 이어붙이기 용으로?ㅎㅎ (근데 뭐, 다른 사진이래 봤자 뭐 볼 게 있다고... ^_ㅠ) *해발고도는 대략 3,200m

어느 순간부터 도로 양쪽으로 저 바람개비(^^;;)들이 보이기 시작ㅋ ‘한 줄에 20대씩 한 줄, 두 줄, 세 줄…’ 이런 건 의미가 없는 것이 지평선까지 늘어서 있음… ㅎㄷㄷ 각도의 한계로 이 사진에는 몇 대 안 찍혔지만 암튼 진짜 겁내 많다는 -0- 한잠 자다 일어나도 또 지평선까지 쭈욱…ㅎㅎ (그것도 그나마 고속도로에서 보이는 거리에 있는 것만 이 정도지… ㄷㄷ) 중국 서부의 어느 흔한 풍경ㅋ
계곡 오프로드 주행 중간에 세워놓고 잠깐 놀다가 뒤에서 온 친구차(^^;;)들과 함께 컨보이 주행 중 한 장ㅋ 이럴 때 일행이 커서 저 승객들이랑 다 친하면 더 재미있는데ㅎㅎ (옛날 생각 잠시…ㅠ) *계곡 해발은 3,600m 정도.
음악 들으며 달달한 수박 먹고 쉬다가 가볍게 계곡 오프로드 주행ㅋ 비록 내게는 좀 시시한(?) 협곡이지만 그래도 계곡 주행의 재미라는 게 있는 법인데 기사 아저씨가 차를 사리는지(^^;;) 너무 천천히 몰아서... -_-a (아, 나보다 훨씬 어린데 (심지어 九零后-0-) 아저씨는 좀 그런가?ㅋ 그럼 '기사 청년' 정도?ㅎㅎ) 암튼 너무 밋밋해서 확 마 운전대 뺏어서 내가 몰고 달릴 뻔...ㅋㅋㅋ
나야 뭐 이런 지형의 동네에 한두 번 와보는 게 아니니 의욕(?)이 넘칠 리도 없고 내가 가진 유일한 신발이 방수는커녕 아주 얕은 물에도 속까지 다 젖는 신발이었기도 하고 (물에 최대한 안 닿게 다니느라 계속 점프-0- 고도도 좀 있는 동네에서;;;) 동행했던 분들은 연세가 좀 있어서 느리기도 해서 (나 혼자만 따로 좀 멀리까지 갔다 옴ㅎㅎ) 암튼 뭐 여러 이유로 협곡 트레킹은 뭐 그냥저냥 적당히 하고 계곡쪽으로 나와서 테이블 깔고 음악 틀어놓고 수박 먹으며 놂ㅋ (옆에 어떤 차는 재료랑 다 들고 와서 바베큐 해먹던데, 우리는 그런 준비는 안 해서... ^^;;) 중간에 어쩌다 보니 차 여러 대가 같은 장소에서 쉬는 타이밍이 있었는데 여러 차 (물론 다 4륜구동ㅋ) 운전자들끼리 얘기하다가 한 명이 다른 차를 잠깐 운전해 보겠다고 해서 몰고 계곡으로 내려감ㅋ 근데 이 사람 어째 운전이 별로네 했는데 저런 계곡같지도 않은 계곡에서 중간에 껴버림ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ 아니 명색이 4륜구동차 오프로드 기사인데 그냥 지나가는 관광객인 나보다도 못하면 어쩌자는 거냐ㅋㅋㅋ ㅠㅠ (나중에 자기들끼리 얘기하는 걸 들어보니 업계에 들어온 지 오래 안 된 사람이긴 한 듯ㅎㅎ) 암튼 차가 낑겨서(?) 다른 기사들이 도와주러 간 장면ㅋㅋ 대놓고 웃긴 좀 그래서 혼자 속으로 킥킥댔는데 지금 생각해 보니 좀 안쓰럽기도 하고... ^^;;
昆仑山大峡谷는 비교적 새로(?) 개발(??)된 곳이어서 많은 사람들이 모르고, 정보도 많이 없다고 하는데... 음... 뭐 일단 현지의 여행/숙박업계 종사자들 중에서도 잘 모른다는 사람이 꽤 있었으니 아주 틀린 말은 아니긴 하겠지만서도... 음... 근데 난 일단 명명부터 좀 마음에 안 든다ㅋ 우선 길고 긴 昆仑山脉 중에서도 메인(?) 부분은 대부분 저~ 서쪽에 있는데 약간 꽁다리(^^;;) 느낌까지 나는 格尔木 근처 지역에서 '昆仑山'이라는 이름을 막 갖다 쓰는 것부터 좀 별로고 (뭐 길이 3,000km가 넘는 산맥지역 대부분이 워낙 인적이 드문 외진 곳이라 그나마 사람들이 좀 다니는 곳에 이름을 붙인 것이겠지만ㅎㅎ) 그리고 이 정도 되는 협곡에 '大峡谷'라는 이름을 달아놓은 것도 어째 좀... ^^;; 뭐 쌀쿡 Arizona의 Antelope canyon 정도만 보고도 '우와~' 하는 사람이야 얼마든지 많을 테니 이런 이름 붙이는 게 뭐 어때서~ 할 수도 있겠지만... 근데 다르게 생각해 보면, 멀리 갈 것도 없이 3,000km 넘게 뻗어있는 곤륜산맥에서만 찾아도 이거보다 훨씬 큰 협곡이 최소 수십 개는 있을 텐데 (아마도 세 자릿수ㅋ) 단지 길(!) 옆에 있다는 이유만으로 이 정도 규모에 그런 이름은 좀... -0- 게다가 좀 더 거시기한 부분은 이미 昆仑山大峡谷라는 이름을 쓰는 다른 곳이 있다는 것!-0- 저~ 서쪽 호탄 근처의, 후방의 산이 좀더 산같은(?) 동네에 있는데 지도(아, 물론 구글맵 말고ㅋ)에서 해당 이름으로 검색하면, 현재로서는 호탄쪽의 그곳만 나온다!ㅋㅋ (이게 무슨 상도에 어긋난 일인가! 싶은 사람도 있을 텐데, 사실 세계적으로 이런 일은 엄청나게 많긴 하다 ^^;;) 아직 지도에 등록도 안 됐다는 얘긴데 지금이라도 다른 이름으로 바꿨으면 싶지만 뭐 나같은 지나가는 관광객이 알 바는 아니긴 하니... ㅎㅎ 아 지금 내가 무슨 얘기를 하는거지... @_@ 더 횡설수설하기 전에 얼른 관두자ㅠㅠ

大峡谷 들어가는 길목에서 멀리 보이던 설산ㅋ 저 정도 위치면 해발 5천m대 후반 정도니까 이 동네에서는 어디 명함도 못 내밀 높이지만 그래도 쿤룬산맥 메인 줄기의 일부니까…ㅎㅎ 이날은 설산 구경이 메인이 아니니까 그냥 쓰윽 보고 패스~ㅋ *사진 찍은 위치는 해발 3,600m 근처.
大峡谷로 들어가는 길목에 이런 사진촬영용(?) 장소를 꾸며놨다ㅋ (저 텐트들은 쓰이는 경우가 있는 것 같기도 하지만…ㅎㅎ) 좀 많이 유치하긴 하지만 그래도 잠시 휴식ㅋㅋ 기둥에 대륙별 지도를 그려 놓았는데 니가 아무리 가본 곳이 없다 해도 지도라는 사실조차 못 알아보면 어쩌니… ^^;;
… 그리고 슬슬 다시 산동네로ㅋ *저기 보이는 건 라싸 방향으로 올라가는 青藏铁路인데, 저런 화물차의 대부분은 빈 상태(…)로 올라간다 -0-
쿤룬산맥(昆仑山脉)은 (압도적인 세계최고의 고원인) 티벳고원의 북쪽 경계를 이루는 산맥으로 青海쪽부터 파미르고원까지 3,000km 넘게 뻗어있다ㅋ 고전이나 무협 등에도 많이 나오는 이름이지만, 나는 무식하니까 뭐 그런 얘기는 생략하고ㅎㅎ (우리 발음으로는 곤륜산맥ㅋ) 워낙 험하기도 하고 사람들이 많이 안 살던 지역이다 보니 3,000km가 넘는 구간에 산맥을 넘는 도로가 딱 2군데 뿐인데 하나는 카슈가르와 호탄의 중간 쯤에서 서티벳으로 넘는 티벳-신장 도로이고 (중국에서 면적이 가장 넓은 성단위인 新疆(대략 남한의 17배)과 두 번째로 큰 단위인 西藏(대략 남한의 14배)은 엄청난 길이의 경계를 공유하며 접하고 있지만, 그 멀고먼 거리에 통하는 도로가 딱 하나뿐이라는...ㅠㅠ) 그리고 또 하나가 바로 青海의 格尔木에서부터 남하해서 티벳으로 향하는 도로. (青藏铁路 개통 전부터, 수많은 여행객들이 티벳을 들어가기 위해 格尔木에 모였던 이유...ㅠㅠ) 애당초 格尔木라는 도시 자체가 쿤룬산맥 동쪽 구석의 바로 북쪽에 만들어진 도시로 거대한 분지에서 산동네로 올라가는 길목의 전진기지(?) 정도라서...ㅎㅎ ==================== 암튼 格尔木에서 출발해서 남쪽으로 차를 몰면 정면으로 거대한 벽이 점점 다가오게 되는데 (아 물론 格尔木 시내에서도 각도만 맞으면 이 산들은 아주 잘 보인다ㅎㅎ) 이 길을 따라 열 몇 시간을 달려도 행정구역은 계속 青海省이지만 (티벳은... 멀다ㅠㅠ 탕굴라산까지 가야 거기서부터 티벳 자치구ㅠㅠ) 도로 관리는 쿤룬산맥에 접근할 때부터 이미 티벳 도로국 산하 -0- (그래서 최근엔 여기서부터 이미 외국인 통행 관리가 빡세게 들어간다ㅠ 젠장ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ) 사진은 그 지역에 들어간다는 의미(?) 중 하나로 관광객들 보라고 세워놓은 쿤룬산맥 기념비ㅋ (유네스코 지질공원 입구 경계이기도 함ㅎㅎ) 사실 쿤룬산맥의 높은 봉우리들은 다 저~ 서쪽에 있고 (7천대 봉우리들이 즐비ㅋ 해발 7천m가 넘는 산은, 아시아를 제외하면 단/한/개/도 없는데 아시아에만 수도 없이 많다. '고산'을 얘기할 때 다른 대륙들은 아예 깜도 안 되는 이유... ㅎㄷㄷ) 동쪽은 비교적 낮은 편인데 (뭐 그래도 해발 6천대이고, 웬만한 대륙에서는 다 대륙 최고봉이 되겠지만ㅎㅎ) 여기에 이런 걸 세워놓으니 뭔가 좀 민망... ^^;;; 산들이 뿌옇게 보이는 이유는 이날 모래바람이 좀 불어서인데 깨끗하게 보이지 않아 좀 아쉽긴 하지만 그래도 이 정도면 모래바람 치고는 양호한 수준-0- (심한 날에는... 시야가 문제가 아니라 차량 통행이 어렵다ㅠ) Aㅏ... 또 아무도 관심없을 잡담을 이리 길게ㅠㅠ 여기서 과감하게 끝!!!ㅠ ==================== *도로 양쪽의 기념비에 써있는 글자는: 巍巍昆仑 萬山之祖 '萬山之祖'같은 문구는 개인적으로 너무 손발리 오그라들어 싫어하지만... ^^;;

Fue un encuentro inesperado y nunca mejor dicho: es prácticamente imposible toparse con alguien transitando el Desierto de Takla-makan, en el oeste de China. Habíamos dejado atrás las impresionantes Montañas Kunlun y llevábamos todo el día en el desierto siguiendo una pista arenosa; a veces sólo se distinguía por las rodadas que aún no había borrado el viento. El sol quemaba en un día totalmente despejado y a la vez hacía un frío intenso, era una sensación muy peculiar… Caía la tarde y al dar la vuelta a un repecho nos encontramos con aquella extraña comitiva. Delante, algo separada del resto, una mujer de porte esbelto, cabalgando un caballo negro, llevaba un bebé acomodado en una silla de montar especial para ese uso. Detrás un hombre de aspecto rudo, con la piel curtida por aquel clima extremo, se bajó de su caballo en cuanto nos vio y se interpuso entre nosotros y la señora. Le seguían dos mujeres de pequeña estatura, una subida en un asno y la otra a pie, cada una ocupándose de un camello bactriano con abundante carga. Nuestro guía se acercó cauteloso a hablar con el hombre. Se notaba la tensión. La conversación fue breve. -"Es mejor que nos marchemos"- me dijo el guía al regresar. -"¿Por qué?, ¿qué te ha dicho ese hombre?”- le pregunté extrañado. -"No quiere que estemos cerca de esa señora"- me respondió nervioso -"Es una dama importante y él está encargado de protegerla” -"¿Pero qué hacen por estos parajes?”- volví a preguntar aún más intrigado. -"Por lo visto ella ha ido a dar a luz a casa de su madre. Ahora vuelve con su bebé y sus sirvientas a reunirse con su marido"- me contestó el guía a la vez que hacía gestos al conductor para que arrancara cuanto antes. Aquel grupo permaneció inmóvil mientras nosotros nos alejábamos. Kashgar to Lhasa 2006 This post belongs to previous write up. I apologize. Between Aksai Qin Lake and Duoma we were passing through Dead People Valley 16840’. The Valley was named so after a dead army platoon which was found here some time ago. Hills in immediate area look as if covered with a velvet green blanket. It was incredible. Highest pass in the Valley, Jie Shan Pass 17580’. We are definitely in some serious altitude! Arriving in Duoma 14704’ late that evening. Before reaching Duoma, we were stuck in a traffic jam, plus BB needed fuel #8/9 how do you like that set-up?! Kashgar to Lhasa 2006 Crossing the high passes of the Kunlun Mountains and beyond, was not always pleasant. Here after more than five hours in the mud till complete darkness, a construction crane appeared out of nowhere, pulling BB out of its and our misery. It would have been a most unpleasant night, putting it mildly. The reason why we ended up in that mess in the first place, last picture, have a look up the embankment; that was to be blocked for eight hours plus. That’s why we chose the old road below. Thursday 27th April 2023 Flying over the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in western China. I did a bus trip across this desert and a train trip through these mountains a few years ago. On the bus trip we stopped every hundred kilometres for a full passport/luggage check. As camps go, this little tent plot remains as a beacon of cold; of sight-lines of the grand Amne Machin, and of intimate moments that only camps can bring. We had canvas tents which did little to deny winds, temperatures, or of any of the mountain sounds. That little canine was with our journey for a week and was the equivalent of a deity animal, protecting, rising early with the morning tea. We named him “Fritz” and he belonged to Gamzon, our utterly magnificent matron and guide. Fritz dictated much, tucking his feral-smelling body underneath our sleeping bags (most often mine). Butter tea, Fritz, and the sacred mountain of the deity Machen Pomra marked much of this portion of our expedition. Micheal and I followed an old trading route that hauled salt primarily, though anything of value would be traded, including tea. La gran mayoría de los turistas que van a China visitan la zona este del país, donde se encuentran las grandes ciudades (Pekín, Xian, Nanking, Shanghai, Hong Kong...), pero muy pocos viajeros llegan a la enorme región de Sinkiang (Xinjiang) en el oeste. Es un territorio autónomo, - separado del Tíbet por las majestuosas Montañas Kunlun -, donde habitan diferentes grupos étnicos (tayikos, kirguizos, uigures...) en un entorno inhóspito que impresiona por su gran belleza. 📷 1 - La "yurta", tienda circular de fieltro, estructura de madera y afianzada con sogas, es la vivienda tradicional de la población nómada que se dedica al pastoreo. 📷 2 - En las vaguadas de las Montañas Kunlun se pueden ver rebaños semisalvajes de camellos bactrianos (de dos jorobas). 📷 3 - El caballo sigue siendo el medio de transporte más habitual en zonas donde no existen las carreteras.
