Different eras, different people, yet the same gnawing fear pulsates through their encounter. As Ryan says, “Men are seriously confused and angry – but when men get angry they want to hurt someone … And mostly the first person they hurt is themselves.” With “Norm and Ahmed” by Alex Buzo, a seminal work from 1968, serving as a historical anchor, audiences are propelled into the present with “Radha and Ryan,” a new play penned by three-time AWGIE winner Nick Parsons, delving deeper into the complexities of male identity and societal expectations. Nick is a writer and director in film, television, theatre and radio. His stage plays include The Pest House, Dead Heart, Hollow Ground and the musical A Nasty Piece of Work. He wrote and directed the feature film Dead Heart (1996), based on his play, as well as ‘The Saviour’ (2006), a half-hour episode of the TV series two Twisted. COME SEE! A new show with a very interesting and unique concept opens this Friday, April 26, and runs for 12 performances over three weeks. (I will be performing in all but the May 9th performance.) EXAGOGE. An immersive opera/play/Passover seder, based on the oldest known Jewish play, written in Alexandria in the second century BCE by Ezekiel the Tragedian. The audience gathers round the seder table or watches from the risers, joining the performers for a traditional 15-part modern seder. An opera composer, Zeke, has brought home his girlfriend Aliya, a non-practicing Muslim, for the first time. Meanwhile, as the seder progresses, opera performers sing an adaptation of the ancient Greek interpretation of the Book of Exodus. Actors, singers, puppeteers, and audience together bring to life this thought-provoking show, which also offers a rather abridged, but still quite legitimate experience of a Passover Seder. The Seder is a ritual involving a retelling of the story of the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt, taken from the Book of Exodus in the Torah. It is a feast blending ritual with song, storytelling, the asking of questions, and discussion in the celebration of freedom. I still haven't processed the news about @lamamatheatre . I am so upset @creative.australia didn't fund them and they won't program for 2025. I was planning to have my next theatre show there next year. I was hoping it would be 2023 or 2024 but COVID backlog has made theatre spaces almost inaccessible for artists like me. And now it has been made even WORSE with this decision by Creative Australia. I have a very long history with La Mama. This photo is one of the first events I did there in 2011 with double-bassist Nick Tsiavos which led to La Mama giving me a spot for their explorations season for "Good Greek Girl" and then I was given a two week season for "I say the wrong things all the time". Melbourne needs more theatre spaces that supports grass-roots theatre, and when I say support, I mean a generous box-office split and some money, otherwise, all we are going to see in theatres, is theatre by people who have money, or theatre that has industry backing, which is pretty "safe" theatre. Change is needed! In the meantime, I will have to brainstorm alternative solutions!
