There is magic within these four walls, something I've been deeply grateful for recently. This life, as hard as it can be, is my own. This husband, these kids are beyond my wildest dreams. I've found myself soaking in all of this more than sitting down at a computer to write. But, I know it's okay because as I get to soak up all the magic here, someday I'll get to share it all with you - in dots and dashes of ink in a story and splashes of paint on paper. I'm just immensely blessed. Even when life still hasn't gone the way I had hoped. Even when the inside of doctor's offices are still all too familiar. Even when. Even if... I have been given immeasurably beyond what I could have asked or prayed for. I hope you get to see the good of today, because even if it's small, even if it's blurred through tears, it's there. For those of you who read it, you will be more in the know than those of you who have not. I am, however , still taking into consideration the fact that not everyone loves why choose novels, I am making Blood Queen stand on its own without reading Mister Nightmare. I am still in desperate need of ARC readers. BQ included. The release date will definitely be this summer, specific date to be determined. I also need to design a cover that is going to tie up the series, but also be a little bit more mind blowing than the last covers. We will see what happens with that. and I am still working on some safe for work Scarlet and Voss artwork. “Nobody’s Journals.” This exhibit by @sjestabrooks at the @ottawaartgallery struck me as I wandered down a hallway in the middle of an event. I could’ve spent hours sifting through these unseen moments of motherhood, scrawled in multiple notebooks, and hung on the wall to be made visible. It made me wonder about how many people share similar experiences behind their respective walls, lacking the spaces or community to relate to one another. I feel like we’re not fully seeing our connections with others (or not have the time and/or money to connect with others, like so many people right now). I’m grateful for mothers’ (many, varied) stories, especially the parts that are hidden from view.

Oh what a week it’s been! I’ve been doing my favourite thing and have been busy with words - working on content for a new client illumin8beauty - I’ll be telling you more about this fab salon and their gorgeous treatments because I know a lot of my lovely midlife followers enjoy a bit of beauty news 💅🏽 💆♀️ And I’ve also been trying to fit in time every day (even if it’s just 10 minutes some days) to work on writing my novel. I’m still at the planning stage but I have a lot more ‘fragments’ - scenes, sentences and character ideas than I did when I began thinking about writing this novel (100 years ago.) So I’m hoping I’ll finally pull it all together sometime this side of me turning 60 - I’m 55 in August but I know me and 5 years still might not be long enough! Thankfully I’m being held accountable to keep going, by a brilliantly supportive writing group and I’m telling myself the old adage ‘nothing ventured, nothing gained’ and that other old chestnut - ‘A year from now you will wish you started today.’ In fact, I’ve become a sucker for those motivational quotes, hoping that they’ll drown out that self-sabotaging voice in my head that tries to tell me I’m not good enough to write a book and I should just give up trying and watch TV and eat cake instead. I am not going to listen…well maybe I will to the cake bit 😆 I hope you keep going and do what fires you up - and whatever that negative voice in your head says - you are not too old to start new things. On the days when writing is hard and triggering, I have to remember the days when it shifts from the struggle of organizing and researching and contemplating what I should and will not say (not easy) into having all the ideas and all the energy and cramped hands but more thoughts about what a reader might want to hear and learn. About what needs to be said (for now) about beings that have challenged and influenced me. Loved me beyond what I expected. In these moments, I could write for days without rest, immersing myself deeply into myth and magick. And I also have to gently tell the Muses their turn is AFTER this book is done. (I don’t think they’ll listen, but they will get more devoted attention soon.) Today, I am reminded how I am ever grateful for this Work. Even when I complain. Even when writing is like squeezing blood from stones. Even when I sit on the couch in the quiet, my ears hurting from my noise-canceling headphones. Alone and yet not. Hello friends, and welcome #100DaysofPrompts! Over the next one hundred days, I will be sharing quotes from songs, movies, books, and everything in between with the hashtag #100DaysofPrompts in the hopes that writer friends around the world might find inspiration and get those creative juices flowing (and become my writing besties with whom I will take over the world). This week, we’re taking inspiration from Taylor Swift’s new album, The Tortured Poets Department with seven quotes from various songs. What do the leashed demons in your head say to this little nugget of inspiration? The plan right now is to have a new theme every week and a new quote every day. Do with them as you will. Take it as a writing prompt and write an all-new short story or flash fiction around the quote presented. Perhaps take a WIP and imagine which character might be saying these words. To whom are they speaking? What situation would this conversation come up in? Get to know your story a little better, or even just use the prompt to get rid of the creative backlog in your mind to clear the way for your currently-blocked work in progress!
