As I was journaling this morning a deeply rooted belief surfaced... Growing up in the church, I was taught that pride was bad! Now I'm not blaming my Sunday school teachers or the pastor... it could have been taught with another lesson. So this was my interpretation... what my young impressionable mind heard and held onto. So of course I would feel ashamed and hide that feeling. I would never say I am so proud of myself. However, I did still seek it. When I'd do something that triggered that feeling of pride I would go straight to my mom to tell / show her. Hoping with everything in me that she would say she was proud of me. This led to me constantly striving for validation / approval from outside of myself. Doing things in the hopes that I would get proof that I was good enough / others were proud of me. This viscous cycle impacts HOW YOU MANIFEST as well... Because if you are DOING things to get the PROOF or the VALIDATION outside of yourself then you are actually keeping yourself from the very thing that you desire! Whatever it is that you want to feel or hear from someone else... You first have to feel or hear it from yourself! 👉TRY IT OUT! Reframe Your Inner Critic I used to say horrible things to myself about myself. In times of stress when it became very clear that I didn’t have it as together as all the other moms, with their make-up, positive spirits, social game and great careers. I would lash out in anger… Some of my favorite things to call myself were stupid and worthless. I literally told myself tat “everything I touch turns to shit.” When I eventually acknowledged the damage this was doing to mental health I started watching for times when this tendency to berate myself would crop up so I could understand it a bit better. What I began to notice was that these feelings that preceded these bouts of self-criticism were based in anxiety… Anxiety over not being accepted Anxiety over being out of control Anxiety over being vulnerable (hello Brene Brown) Once I understood that I was just anxious I was able to interrupt the pattern of insulting myself and instead acknowledge what I was anxious about, even reframing my thoughts and truly forcing myself to flip the script- saying something positive instead. I would encourage you to try this out and see if it holds true for you. When you start dumping on yourself - ask yourself what the real issue is… Ask yourself what are you anxious about? What do you most fear if what you are telling yourself about yourself was to hold true? Do you fear rejection? Being alone? Being judged as not enough? What I’ve Learned…(So That You Don’t Have To) After working with moms I started to notice some patterns in the successes and failures of the burnt-out mamas that I work with and what really keeps them stuck. The one main thing that I have learned from my other moms who’ve struggled for years with stress and overwhelm is that they… Neglect themselves. It is rare I meet a mom who doesn’t put everyone else first and let me tell you, I get it. Between needing to wear all of the hats, and trying to avoid mom-guilt this has been a hard task for me to defeat as well. Talking To Your Loved Ones About Being Overwhelmed If there is one thing I hear allll the time it is that “my family and friends don’t understand what it is like to be struggling and overwhelmed with life’s daily tasks.” I agree. There can be a lot of misunderstanding or even judgment of those who are living with this issue… especially when there are days when everything seems almost “normal” and then there are other days where it feels like the wheels have completely fallen off. It is important to talk with your loved ones about… What you are experiencing - Your loved ones don’t live in your mind or your body. You can’t assume they know what it's like to be you or understand your level of stress. What they can expect - Let them know what your problems are currently, but also how they might change temporarily or permanently. Talk about any changes that may need to be made to your schedule or responsibilities. Maybe you’ll need to take on a little less, or ask for more assistance with specific tasks. How they can support you - What do you need from them? Do you need a support group? Accountability? Financial support? Do you need to simply off-load some responsibilities or are you fine with your workload but may need additional emotional support or understanding? Be as specific as possible but also understand that keeping the lines of communication open is the best way to keep everyone on the same page. What is one thing you have communicated with your family or loved ones that has allowed you to feel more supported as you navigate through the stress of life? Welcome to my IMPERFECT REALITY Forget about the filters, let’s get real. Showing up online means we get to choose what parts of ourselves we share with the world. This can be great… but I am not at all for the fake, the filters, the perfection. I am real. I am raw. I believe this is what people need to see. While you guys watch me as I guide you through Yoga practice in what seems to be a well-lit serene scene… well just know that my view isn’t always as serene- and that’s OK! These pictures represent my reality and I learned a long time ago that I need to accept the messy parts of me that are not all the shiny-happy-perfection that I love to show to the world. This doesn't mean that I don’t care or that I don’t want to improve but what I have learned is that adding personal judgment to my mess doesn’t improve the mess and leaves me feeling like shit. I show this part of me to you so that you know that I am for real when I say this is a “judgment free” zone. Perfectionism and fake life reports don’t help anyone… Also… they are boring and don’t interest me… So let's just drop the filter (every now and then 😉) and get comfortable with a good clean dose of reality. Action is Better than Inaction Whenever you try something new there is always a risk… You might fail… You might fall flat on your face You might invest time and money into solutions to improve your stress levels and it might not work OR This could be the one thing that actually works The one thing that makes your overwhelm a thing of the past The one thing that changes everything The one thing that allows you to do that thing that you always said you wanted to do… So you can choose to be fearful and nervous…locked in inaction Or you can take the HOPE that is being offered you and give it a try. The Biggest Misconception That Kept Me Stuck I don’t know who needs to hear this but if you are feeling stuck in overwhelm about your chaotic mom life… keep reading. What I need you to understand is that what you are experiencing is just the symptom of something much bigger going on beneath the surface. Symptoms do not exist in isolation. They are never without cause… And unless you deal with the actual root cause of lack of awareness & self-care… you will be stuck in a cycle of symptom patching forever. I say this because one of the biggest misconceptions that kept me stuck was this idea that if I just did more, was more efficient, got to the end of my to-do list that the feeling of chaos would go away. This “solution” didn’t take into account my mindset. This meant that despite all my efforts to patch all my symptoms… I continued to feel incredibly overwhelmed (no matter how much of my “to-do” list that I completed) leaving me feeling like I was back at square one. The other day a past client messaged me. She is a great person – always makes me smile! “I’ve been meaning to message you sooner, but honestly I was discouraged that I could not keep up with the Spring Reset. Controversy Alert! As a Coach who helps stressed out mamas get results I sometimes talk about ideas or methods that get me hate from people who are not open to a different way of living with calm & joy. But that’s ok because I have big shoulders and lots of support from those who know me and have worked with me long enough to see the results I can help them get. #1 Some people think my approach is too woo woo but the what they don’t understand is the reason I work this way is because in the Law of Attraction, which states that the energy we put out, is what we will receive back. #2 Some people don’t like that I am choosy about who I work with. The reason I won’t work with those with a victim mentality is that they are not yet ready for the transformation I offer. #3 Some people don’t like that I charge a premium for my services because I should “help everybody” but what I have learned is - the more someone invests in themselves… the more dedicated they are to showing up, doing the work, sticking to their goals and getting the results they want. Being Your Own Stress-Relief Detective There are so many brilliant, resourceful moms, dealing with stress & anxiety who are acting as their own detectives that I wanted to give you some red flags to watch out for if you are working through this problem on your own without professional help. 🚩1 - If despite all your effort, you still aren’t seeing an improvement in your symptoms of stress & anxiety, you may need to further address your mindset. Simply going through the motions and crossing the self-care check marks off of the list, will not serve you, if you do not shift your mindset, and start challenging some of the limiting beliefs that have kept you in this state of turmoil. 🚩2 - Most Moms who are living with so much stress, are putting everyone else’s needs before their own. Neglecting to set boundaries, and unapologetically finding time to work on calming your nervous system and caring for yourself is vital in reaching the state of calm you desire in your life. 🚩3 - If you are living with an all or nothing mentality, you will start to feel like you’re on a roller-coaster ride.
