According to reports from locals in the Canton Centre Mall Facebook group, there are orders posted on the doors stating the structure is unsafe and needs to be repaired or torn down. I haven’t seen any news reports yet, but the remaining parts of this mall that I first visited in 2017 will likely be torn down. I visited Charleston Town Center in 2019, after a rowdy night with friends at the Mountain Stage afterparty. The mall was still a very impressive space even without the full fountain. Charleston Town Center in Charleston, West Virginia had a three story waterfall fountain in the nineties. I can hear and smell this picture. Last set from the #mall today. The first made me laugh. This mall has been open since 1994, and it was the mall that had the most impact on me as a kid. The structural support pillars have always served as makeshift benches for folks, who obviously leave their detritus behind. I picked up the trash as I left, but it reminded me of the continuity of things. Unlike many malls these days, this one is still thriving (and is even planning further expansion). Even though the Sears here closed a while back and was replaced by Nordstrom, the company will always have a legacy at this mall (and many others). Sears had a property development branch of the company, Homart Development, which contributed to many malls built across the country from 1965-1995. The next few days are shots I took from a trip to a nearby mall with the Industar 61 lens. It was a lot of fun putting it through its paces in a more appropriate setting than the park from a few posts ago. The focal length (52mm), the vintage look of the lens, and lots of interesting architectural and colorful details made this trip quite enjoyable. Spencer Gift at Summit Mall was a way different store in the 1960s than it is now. Spencer Gifts wasn’t always all bongs and dongs 🤯 This reminds me more of the Harriet Carter catalog, which makes sense since Spencer started as a mail order catalog in 1947. The catalogs focused on useful everyday items, with a few spicy ones mixed in casually. I used to love looking at the Harriet Carter catalog at my grandmas house, but remember hitting a certain age and figuring out what those “personal massagers” were actually used for 😳🫣 In 1963, Spencer Gifts opened its first retail store in the Cherry Hill Mall in NJ. This ad is for their store in Summit Mall in Fairlawn, Ohio sometime in the 60s. I remember the store at Summit having two levels. The raised level was where they kept all of their adults only products. This is basically a childhood memory in a package for me. I took the kids to a retro candy store downtown today, I saw this, purchased and consumed it in basically one sitting. I regret nothing. Today, my kids and I played Ms. PAC-Man, pinball, AND Nintendo… we ate candy, had milkshakes, hung out at the mall and bought new shoes.
