📚: All You Have To Do Is Call by Kerri Maher ⭐️: 4.5/5 (rounding down on #goodreads) “…Maybe I’ll rest better if I can think of myself as the bridge to something better for our daughters.” What a read. Taking place in 1971, this (unfortunately) showed me how history can so easily repeat itself in 2024. Loosely based on the real life Jane Collective, All You Have To Do Is Call tells the story of four women whose lives intertwine with Jane — an underground women’s health organization in pre-Roe vs. Wade Chicago. I went back and forth between a 4.5 and 5 star rating for this. While the plot gets slightly soapy at moments, which I consider a distraction to the far bigger point of the book, I consider this a must read in the continued wake of Roe vs. Wade’s overturning and with the current state of US women’s rights.

Some of you have heard the tale of how a guy named TJ came to own a shop called Anne’s, but I’ll recount it here for everyone! One day while working in Nowra, I’d had a particularly bad day. I was butting heads with Head Office over pricing and policies and had to just get away and go for a walk. I decided to walk down the other end of town to buy a book, make myself feel better. So I walked all the way down to Anne’s and there in the window was a little yellow sign saying “Shop For Sale” and I thought, geez, that’s the dream. The picture above is the view I had while I thought about it. Fantasy might not have been the best section to make the decision. I stood staring at Tolkien, Pratchett, Pierce, Nix, Asimov, Herbert, McCaffrey, Jordan, Martin, Wurts, and Feist. So, I called my wife, asked her how she’d like to own a bookshop and she agreed it’d be better for my sanity. So, I made the call, spoke to Anne and here we are! As to keeping the name Anne’s, well, I’ve always known it as Anne’s. For eight years we passed through Nowra on our way to Mollymook and stopped in. It’s been known as such locally for 25 or so years! So, when Anne asked if I was planning on changing the name, I decided to go with Anne of Green Gables as our patron saint! She’s a lover of books, passionate, and from my neck of the woods being born in Nova Scotia and living in Prince Edward Island! And there you have it! This book was intense, atmospheric, and a bit of a rollercoaster! You know I love me some dual POV & sprinkle in a creepy run down motel setting! The characters were definitely perfect for this story (both main and supporting). This story was full of mystery, blackmail, secrets & lies (the whole kit and caboodle). 🪛As much as this was a slow burn it was equal parts fast paced. Maybe because I couldn’t stop reading. Reading update✨ 💬: what are you currently reading, and what are your thoughts so far? I wanted to jump on here today and give you all an update on my progress with Dragon Rider! I’m a bit over 40% through it, and I’m starting to really enjoy the story! It’s taken me a while to get through the bulk of the world building (as with any fantasy book) but I’m at the point now where I could just keep reading and not put the book down at all🤭 the action is definitely picking up, and I’m really looking forward to seeing the story progress! This is definitely the heftiest fantasy book I’ve read in a while (I’ve been reading a lot of YA lately) so it’s taking me a while to read since it takes a lot more focus to understand what’s happening. It definitely seems that the story is starting to pick up a lot more now though, so I’m confident that I’ll be able to finish it soon… hopefully before the release date so that I can have a review posted for you all! The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes. 4.5 stars. Audiobook: I enjoyed this audiobook so much. The narrator did an incredible job at portraying all the dialogue between different characters. I have been trying to get back into reading more historical fiction and this might be the push I needed. This was emotional and thought provoking. I loved the characters and the bonds between these women. Before the coffee gets cold by Toshikazu Rawaguchi. 3 stars. Audiobook: I can understand the appeal of this novel, however, I found it rather dull. I caught myself having to rewind bits of the audiobook because I would lose focus and miss details. Although, chapter 4, was easily the best part and improved my overall rating. It was more emotional and thought provoking. I also had a more emotional attachment to the character given her circumstances regarding why she wanted to jump in time. The overall concept I really enjoyed and feel like it had great potential. I just wasn’t overly thrilled with the execution. The whole story does keep your interest but I felt like not a lot happens for the first 65% of the book, it all picked up in the last 35% and you find out all theses twists (which I actually loved). I’m excited for the next one to come out (I am hoping there is a next one because we were left on a bit of a cliff). ⭐️REVIEW⭐️ {gifted} FUNNY STORY by Emily Henry Let me start this off by saying that I’m a HUGE Emily Henry fan. I’ve loved every single one of her other books (even People We Meet On Vacation!) and it physically pains me to say this but this one was just ok for me. Happy Place had such a huge impact on me that my expectations for this one were sky high, and it was inevitable that I wouldn’t love everything she ever writes (and that’s ok!), so don’t let me discourage you from picking this one up! There was definitely a lot to like about it. It has all the witty banter that we’ve come to expect from EmHen, and the found family vibes were impeccable. I loved the small town setting, and loved that Daphne is a librarian. The writing is wonderful and for the most part it had me smiling so big it hurt. But – and this bit will have minor spoilers so proceed with caution – I just couldn’t get on board with Daphne as a character. I loved that she didn’t have her shit together, and that she wanted to discover who she was without Peter, but I wanted more of Daphne discovering herself without a man attached to her. She pretty much moves straight from being in a relationship with Peter to being in a relationship with Miles and I get that the author paints them as very different characters but I wanted her thrive on her own. Miles was also a bit bland, and while I liked him well enough I didn’t get a lot of swoon. They fake dated for about 5 minutes. Where was the angst?? I also wanted more of a showdown with Peter and Petra (also whyyyyyy are their names so similar?? It was so confusing to read!) – the petty part of me wanted to see them suffer for treating our MC so badly but it just kinda fizzled out. I couldn’t get into the storyline with her dad and it felt like it really dragged. It just didn’t have that emotional gut punch that I’ve come to know and love about Emily Henry’s books. Overall, this is my least favourite EmHen book, but it was still perfectly readable so don’t let me discourage you from picking it up! Have you read this one? Is it on your list? 💬 What is your most anticipated release for the rest of the spring? These are the new releases I’m more excited about. I know Funny Story already came out a few days ago but I couldn’t make this list without including it because I really can’t wait to get my hands on it. I got eARCs for the other four—I actually finished Evocation today and I’ll be posting my review on Goodreads in a couple of days! When I saw this, I knew I needed one - it has three cupholders, with the middle one having enough space for a coffee mug (or your book & kindle!). The cover is removable and washable in case you spill but this thing is sturdy so I don’t think you will as my dog jumped on top of it yesterday and nothing moved. Bella is here to visit The Manor, a high end ‘resort’ in the woods. All the rich people gather and live their lucious lifestyles. Despite the setting they are in, they can’t help but ignore the local towns folklore of “The Night Birds.” Francesca and her husband, Owen, opened The Manor and definitely don’t believe the locals crazy stories. That is until one night, The Midnight Feast, where those stories might just not be a crazy rumor anymore. The multiple POV merge into each others lives on the night of the feast and the ending will have you surprised!! Overall, I give this book a 3.5. The first half was a struggle to get into, however the last half was 🔥 Although overall the storyline ties together, there was some loose ends missing for me. Another thing is the story behind the folklore just seemed so far fetched for me. The scare factor really wasn’t there. That being said, I don’t normally love this writing style of multiple POV but this one was written well and the suspense delivered. I’m always a fan of reading diary/journal entries 🤪 Excited for this ARC to come out June 18th! Last year I finally got around to reading Caraval and absolutely adored it, and now that the OUABH series is complete I’m super excited to dive into it! Currently, I’m halfway through book one via Audiobook and I’m loving every second of it. Stephanie Garber writes so beautifully, a perfect blend of modern YA fantasy, romance and a splash of classic fairytales which is truly unmatched 💕
