𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀, & 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱... Mine and Zaffar's one-month Sri Lanka roadtrip on two scooters has been a stunning adventure. I learnt about the Sri Lankan civil war (15 years too late), driving past landmines that are still littering the forests in the Tamil area up north. From my reading, I can only imagine that the Tamil people experienced something similar to what the people of Gaza are facing right now. I have a new fear of elephants after one charged at Zaffar's bike. There are around 6,000 elephants on this small island. We were warned a number of times by locals to "be careful" driving, that "roads are dangerous" at night because of elephants. 176 people were killed by elephants in 2023, while humans killed 470 elephants. As humans encroach on elephant terrain, cutting down forest for rice paddies, elephants trample buildings and people to get to human food supplies. Meanwhile, humans are electrocuting elephants with high voltage fences, or are making explosives disguised as food to kill them. Tourists need to check their behaviour: it is 2024 yet elephants are still enslaved, ridden and touched by white privileged tourists. Meanwhile, safari jeeps get so close to elephants that it obviously distresses them (the elephant that charged at Zaffar's scooter had just been surrounded by two jeeps). Day 349/? 2nd day of the motorbike trip! Thanks to the white ginseng happy water, I am feeling actually good this morning (after a couple ro many beers the night before). So, back on the bike with my trusty driver, along and down the mountains. Tons of scenic places and viewingspots ⛰️ Just around noon, we arrived at #mysonsanctuary, which dates from the 4th to the 13th centuries CE. It was the religious and political capital of the Champa Kingdom, with beautiful brick temples, mostly influenced by the Hinduism of India. On the way to Hoi An, we had a couple more short stops to enjoy the rice fields, farming culture, and rice paper making. Bali is overhyped😫 Yes, we really do think that. All we see on Instagram are how beautiful and cheap Bali is, with so many positive things, etc. And don’t get us wrong, Bali is such a beautiful island, with numerous waterfalls, beaches, culture, and amazing scenery.🌴 But the reality is that these places are so crowded. In the most well-known cities like Canggu or Ubud, it takes ages to drive somewhere because of the traffic. Most people say that it’s cheap. For example, food is cheap, but only when you go to some local restaurants or food stalls by the road. When you go to the famous restaurants you see on Instagram, you will not pay less for lunch or dinner like you would in Europe. The same applies to hotels.😆 For us, Bali is not any cheaper than the Philippines. Sometimes we felt like the food was even cheaper in the Philippines than it was in Bali. The prices of accommodation are the same, of course, it also depends on the season! For example, we spent around 900€/pp for a month in Bali with 9 hotel collaborations. So, we had almost half a month in a hotel for free, as well as dinner there. If you saw our last reel about the price breakdown in the Philippines, we spent a little more for 1.5 months there, and we only had one collaboration for 2 nights. For the rest of the trip, we paid for every single night, every single lunch and dinner, and every activity. So yeah Bali is not any cheaper, not anymore. Cat Ba // Day 5 April 28 . This morning was our first joint shift! We worked together on the morning shift from 7am-12pm and it was so fun. We already know we work well together, so our shift had a nice flow to it. It was a bit busy but manageable. We’ve discovered we both quite like the early shift because then we have the whole day to do whatever! We finished at 12 pm - sweaty and dreaming about swimming in the pool 20m away. After a quick lunch we went swimming! We played some games in the pool and met some lovely French people who are actually exchange students in Seoul at the moment! It felt like a little piece of home to talk about familiar places and South Korea. After the pool, we relaxed on the day beds and did some reading, chatting, and drawing. Rae made a banging chocolate/PB/banana smoothie as a snack before dinner, and we just relaxed! We were trying to get on a boat tour tomorrow, but they are all full! BUTTT, the owner of the hostel squeezed us into an evening plankton boat tour! So tomorrow evening, we’re going to see the bioluminescent plankton!! We are very excited. The kitchen staff has been making us delicious vegetarian meals as our staff meal and today we got delivered some amaaazing curry and rice poolside. We ate until we were stufffffffed. Then, we played Rummy with our friends Zee and Scott, followed by a round of pool. We have the next 2 days off, so we decided to go out to a bar tonight! We shared a motorbike and rode into town with our friends Zee and Simone to a popular place called Oasis. We had a beer and tried the infamous balloons. They were a good time, hahaha. After a few hours, we headed back to the hostel and went to bed pretty quickly. Cat Ba // Day 4 April 27 . Today, Rae had the morning shift and Bex the midday shift. The hostel was fully booked, so breakfast was a bit busier than usual, but Rae had our new friend Scott's help on the bar, so it was all ok. It's been so lovely to meet the other volunteers like Scott here. They are all so sweet and welcoming. Then, once Rae and Scott finished, Bex started their shift. The middle of the day is usually pretty chill with lots of people out during the day and the kitchen being closed from 2 till 4. It makes for a relaxed shift. So Bex mostly cleaned and danced around, as well as making some drinks. Rae went out on a bike to the nearby national park for the afternoon with a couple of people we met here. She had a wonderful day, though she felt tired. She saw lots of beautiful scenery, did a little hike, and even went into a huge cave! Of course, she took advantage of the echo and sang opera in it, hehehe. Then Rae had a bit of a dramatic turn of events on the way home because her motorbike ran out of gas mid-drive. She managed to flag down some locals to help - and 150,000đ spent, 1 angry old man and quite a bit of panic later, she made it back. Bex was already chilling by the pool, so Rae joined them for a while. Then we ate dinner and hung out some more before Bex retired to bed, and Rae stayed hanging out for a few hours. She ended up singing with some of the guests and other workawayers by the pool. How wonderful! Cat Ba // Day 3 April 26 . Today, we had our first real shifts at the cafe! We were excited and nervous. Bex had the morning shift from 7am-12pm, and Rae had the evening shift of 5pm-10pm. Overall, it went well! Everyone has been really kind and helpful. It’s so fun to meet people from all over the world here and put some love into their drinks. We are making all sorts of things... such as smoothies, cocktails, Vietnamese coffees, fruit juices, and teas. It’s fun! It’s been the best bits of the service industry so far. Though 5 hours can feel long at times when you are continuously sweating. During our 5-hour shared break, we went for a swim in the pool and played with a SUP board with some other guests trying to surf across the pool and make little games out of it. We also used the (free!) motorbikes to go to the beach nearby for a few hours! It was dreammmyyyyy. You can see the bits of mountains and there was plennnty of swimming water - pretty clean too! We enjoyed a coconut (shock) and hung out with some guests from the hostel. At 5pm, Rae came back to do her first shift! Bex took their time coming back, and then kept Rae company during most of her shift. It was quite busy, actually. Another guest kept Rae company too - a 10-year-old German girl named Lily! Towards the end, Bex went to help our manager move to and clean her new house. It was actually quite fun (and sweaty… shock), and it was nice to spend time with the other volunteers over some beers. We finished the day hanging out by the pool with the volunteers, then hanging out just the two of us. It was nice and romantic. We had a cheeky dip in the pool in our clothes before heading to bed for the night - because Rae works at 7am, eeek! SIQUIJOR This might have been the highlight of the past three months traveling through Asia. Finally, an island in the Philippines where the focus isn’t just on organized tours, but on simply enjoying the destination itself. Stunning beaches, surreal colors, vibrant marine life & incredible waterfalls. Yes, you read that right: waterfalls. Despite having seen many waterfalls over the past 19 months on the road, we were captivated by those in Siquijor. The water was turquoise blue, there were plenty of rope swings for an adrenaline rush & the river was refreshingly cool. We enjoyed everything on the island & congratulated ourselves for allocating an extra day here, which we took from our budget for the next destination. Before arriving, it wasn’t really clear to us what to do on the island or if we really needed 5 days to explore the area. Luckily, we followed the advice from other backpackers that Siquijor is all about the vibe & taking it slow & easy. After a while, we found our way around & went to the same restaurants multiple times: breakfast at a cozy local eatery right on the beach (noodles, veggies & water for €1,50 per person) & dinner at an Italian restaurant where not only the chef is from Italy but also all the ingredients are imported from there. This might have been the best pizza of the entire trip. On our last day, we ordered takeaway & enjoyed the pizza with a bottle of red wine on the terrace of our room. In addition to the amazing food, we had a great time cruising through the lush vegetation on the island, cooling off in various waterfalls & snorkeling + freediving with the largest turtles I’ve ever seen. On the rope swings, the locals taught me how to do a backflip & eventually, I managed to pull it off but not without quite a few painful fails beforehand. One recipe (that works for us) for having a great time is finding good + affordable restaurants, staying in a nice accommodation & having enough time to establish a routine. In Siquijor, we started our days with early morning strolls along the beach near our accommodation & with this, tick marked all three boxes. Sri Lanka, you were such an extremely pleasant surprise. There was so much on offer from this vibrant country. Chilled beach towns, breathtaking mountains, dogs and puppies that guide you home and accompany you on walks, the freshest fruit, the wildlife and the PEOPLE!!!! My word, out of all the countries we were lucky enough to travel to, Sri Lankans were the most beautiful, generous, kind and helpful people we have met. Cat Ba // Day 2 April 25 . Our first day learning the ropes at our new workaway. We had a lazy start to the day and woke up slowly. Then we relaxed by the pool for a while before getting some food. It feels so refreshing to wake up and be in such a beautiful location surrounded by kind and caring people. The pool is so beautiful too! We had training today on the bar with our new manager/friend Zee. We started once we finished eating 2 yummy vegan burgers, and she taught us everything. She went through the layout of the bar, and we got to try making some drinks like Vietnamese coffee, coconut coffee, and smoothies. It was really fun to be back behind a bar again. Both of us worked in hospitality in the past and realized we really missed it! It's nice to do a job that is so sociable and the place is quite relaxed so it's not much pressure too. We loved it! We can play whatever music we want while we work as well, so we put on all the favorites of the moment and jammed out. When we were done, we went for a swim in the pool and made up some fun games to play together. Then we relaxed by the pool again, and Bex drew while Rae made some new friends. We just rested and ate dinner with all the other volunteers before playing a game of pool, Bex won! Then we played some music together and sang by the pool for a while which was so lovely. We chatted and then headed to bed, Bex has the early shift tomorrow, so we tried to get a good night's sleep! J214 to J218 : Bangkok🇹🇭🏛️🍚🥭 1ère ville de Thaïlande et on a adooooré!! Les nombreux temples sont magnifiques. On a découvert les night markets où la nourriture est tellement pas chère et tellement tellement bonne !! En plus de ça on est arrivés pendant la fête de Songkran qui célèbre le nouvel an du calendrier bouddhiste !! Getting to help feed and wash Elephants was a dream come true. It was at an actual sanctuary even though it’s called a ‘spa’. They had rescued around 8 elephants from hard labour practices and plan to rescue more. Day 348/? Already leaving Da Nang today, I booked a 2D1N motorbike tour through the mountains down to Hoi An. So, I am back on the backseat with the best easy rider, Tuan. The day started with a visit of the marble mountain, massive areal, a lot of beautiful caves, statues, views and pagodas. Afterwards, we left Da Nang behind and slowly drove up the mountains and into the countryside. Enjoyed the beautiful views while snacking on 1kg of Jackfruit, which we bought on the side of the street. Had a couple coffee and food stops, visited some of the Hmong villages, waved to a lot of kids, and then arrived in a small village in Dong Giang. Had some amazing conversations with Tuan over some beer, tried some white ginseng happy water, and got a full vegetarian dinner! CEBU CITY ••••••••••• Wow, this was an introduction to the Philippines 🇵🇭 the bright jeepneys, tangled wires and buzz of the city overwhelmed us for our first day travelling. We didn’t have Kate’s bag and our hostel (even though it was pretty) was one star and not very clean! However, we settled in and explored the city with all its colours and enjoyed eating a Cebu speciality (Lechon)! Lechon is a spit roasted pig served with a liver sauce —> swipe to see! Ankunft in Chumphon gegen 4 Uhr morgens 🥴. Von dort aus geht es mit dem Taxi zum Pier, allerdings mussten wir dort eine Weile warten, da die erste Fähre erst um 7 Uhr abfährt. Unser Vertrauensmann in Bangkok 😂 hat uns mehrere Umschläge mit den entsprechenden Tickets gegeben. Es ist unglaublich, dass alles so reibungslos funktioniert. Als wir direkt an Bord gehen, suchen wir den klimatisierten Bereich mit den bequemeren Sitzen auf. Das war ein Fehler, denn es war dort eiskalt 🥶. Nun wissen wir auch warum die meisten draußen geblieben sind. Wir ziehen uns also warm an und schließen noch einmal die Augen. Jetzt haben wir knapp zwei Stunden Fahrt vor uns, bis wir unser Ziel Koh Tao erreichen. Ankunft auf Koh Tao: Es war wieder etwas turbulent 😂. Am Pier standen viele Einheimische, die den Namen ihres Hotels riefen.
