A bold step forward from 604, the stronger production of Ladytron’s sophomore effort, Light & Magic makes the act’s distinctive modern feel to retro electronica more endearing. A strong precursor to the electroclash movement a few years later, this album has hints of electronic elements from their primitive beginnings to the present. While comparisons are annoying, the strong synth sounds of “Re:agents” can certainly reminiscent on those revolutionized by Kraftwerk. “Flicking Your Switch” has a catchy beat that’s similar to a more subdued one heard in Livin’ Joy’s “Dreamer”. While that’s true, Ladytron isn’t just some band fascinated by imitating the sounds of the past, but they rather mold it into something far more interesting and fresh. While the wild varied electronic sounds are quite captivating, the juxtaposition of Helen Marnie’s and Mira Aroyo’s ominous vaguely lovely vocals truly stands out. This works well on the album’s top highlight, “Seventeen” with its stylishly demented sounds that sounds like a fashion show about to self destruct. Those vocals can definitely lead to some sensual moments on the demanding “Evil” and sone distorted loveliness on “Blue Jeans”. It just proves those two ladies can incorporate their strange vocals with any background. I am celebrating Earth Day the way that it was always meant to be celebrated, by listening to icy electronic synth-pop music. The English band, Ladytron, was a breath of fresh air when they emerged around the turn of the new millennium and mesmerized me with their sleek soundscapes. Their 2002 sophomore album, Light & Magic, was one that I eagerly bought on CD upon its release, but had not been able to locate on vinyl in recent years. Enter the new 2024 Record Store Day pressing to the rescue. “Seventeen”, “Flicking Your Switch”, “Cracked LCD”, “Blue Jean”, and “Evil”, all of which were in frequent rotation on the Georgia State University college radio station that I used to listen to during my workdays, sound amazing on wax, as does the entirety of this disc. I have seen Ladytron in concert several times, having attended all of their Atlanta shows. Their synths and vocal harmonies translate brilliantly to the stage, making them one of the best live bands I have ever seen. I am grateful that they are still going strong, with new music that shines with just as much vibrant energy as ever. Light & Magic was a top priority when I lined up at the local record shop this past Saturday.
