Digging out a staple artist of my preteen years and one of my earliest vinyl purchases. 2009-2010 mainstream music saw a dominance of mostly dance club anthems and empowering relationship oriented pop ballads. @owlcityofficial comes along to not only score a seemingly unlikely hit, but take the whole world by storm with his song “Fireflies”! An especially rare feat for an artist previously associated within the realm of MySpace. I too was apart of the hype train and like other people found endearment with the more stripped down dreamy synth production and lyrics that are just as imaginative as the music itself. Eventually I discovered the album Ocean Eyes and nothing ever screamed escapism and (as previously stated) imaginative like ever before or debatably since. I have a hard time believing this album is 15 years old this year and yet it feels unique and refreshing even to this day! I owe a lot to Adam Young for partially influencing my passion for creativity and not holding back on what my imagination calls for. I bought OG 2 LP press around 2015-ish and remember it not costing me much. For many years after that it became a very sought after item when prices skyrocketed. Thankfully it was recently repressed last year and now is affordable again as I’m writing this post. Regardless of value I’m very pleased to own this as it truly is a stunner to behold💙🤍

Today’s track is Where The Heart Is by Soft Cell. We open with a glorious electronic melody, repeatedly descending. It sounds vintage and from the future all at the same time. The drums are key, countering the fluidity of the melody. Next is the complete joy of the Marc Almond vocal - completely unique in tone and phrasing, absolutely unmistakable. It’s a nagging melody in the verse, perfect for that Almond plead. It’s simple, like a nursery rhyme, and you feel compelled to listen to the lyric. I am not particularly worried about words but I know them all here. We roll into the chorus and there is a wonderful step up - Marc leans back and hits the high notes as the bed plods on, now supplemented by a Wurlitzer style melody. We settle back for verse 2 - Dave throws in a simple keyboard line to sit on top of the bed. There is a glorious mundanity in the tune - and I mean that in a good way. The track has a lovely slow swing but it drops you back in the brown wash of the childhood home. There is no room for solos here - it’s all about maintaining the stiflingly awkward atmosphere. We head straight into the next verse - we do get some single backer action but Marc has it covered. He is a one off, a sublime singer of standards and up there with Shirley when the heart needs to be worn on the sleeve. The final chorus repeats and extends before the bed is left to mooch off to the fade. An epic track, a mini kitchen sink drama wrapped in something compelling and gorgeously addictive. 26 de abril de 1993, con la producción de Flood y el grupo, los ingleses 𝑫𝒆𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒅𝒆 lanzan el single "𝐖𝐀𝐋𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐈𝐍 𝐌𝐘 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐄𝐒", segundo corte extraído del álbum "Songs of Faith and Devotion", un día después este sería editado en USA. Llegó al puesto 14 de los UK Singles Chart y número 1 en los USA Modern Rock Tracks. Considerado uno de los temas más roqueros de la banda, que incluso para la versión 7" el sonido se hizo más ruidoso y sucio. El lado B del single es "My Joy", un tema en la onda de "I Feel You", primer corte del álbum. "Walking In My Shoes" es una canción que no falta en los conciertos. Uno de los temas más sobresalientes de "Songs of Faith and Devotion". Depeche Mode - Everything Counts. 17.11.1983. The single introduced a transition in lyrical content for the group. "Everything Counts" specifically addresses the issue of corporate greed and corruption in Britain, as the chorus sings of "grabbing hands" that "grab all they can". Perhaps surprisingly, the single was released at a time when the band itself was not under a formal contract with Mute Records (Gore publishes his songs under the name "Grabbing Hands Music"). In addition to "found" sounds used as samples, the single also samples a variety of musical instruments, such as the xylophone and a melodica (which main songwriter Martin Gore has been known to play on stage for the song). It was also the first song in the band's catalogue that includes both of the band's singers prominently (at different times). Lead vocalist Dave Gahan sings the lead vocals on the verses, while Gore sings the lead vocals on the chorus with backing from Alan Wilder. When the song has been performed live, the chorus has been sung by all of the band's members except Gahan, as it appeared in the video for the single.
