The “Portals of the Past” portico sits on the edge of Lloyd Lake in Golden Gate Park. It is all that remains of the Towne Mansion that was destroyed during the 1906 earthquake and fire. The Towne mansion was the home of Alban N. Towne, the Vice President and General Manager of the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, and his wife Caroline. It was located on Nob Hill, where the Masonic Auditorium stands today. After Alban's death in 1895, Caroline continued to live in the mansion until it was destroyed during the earthquake and fire on April 18, 1906. In the aftermath of the earthquake, photographer Arnold Genthe took a photo of the destruction through the frame of the portico. Genthe's haunting photograph and the portico became symbolic of the end of an era in San Francisco. The portico came to be known as the Portals of the Past, a name that was attributed to poet Charles Kellogg Field who came across a quote that reflected the forward-looking nature of San Franciscans after the disaster. In 1909, Caroline Towne donated the portico to Golden Gate Park in memory of her husband. In an article from 1948, the San Francisco Chronicle recalled this: "San Franciscans, sensing that it symbolized an era that had also died, moved it to Lloyd Lake, where it gleams white and graceful and lonely upon the far shore." This video shows the Portals of the Past as it looks today, along with some rare footage of it from a silent film that was screened at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition.

San Francisco Places 🌳The Golden Gate Park (pt 1) Created in 1870 on what used to be nothing but a giant sea of sand dunes, this large urban park has remained one of San Francisco’s favorite spots to enjoy nature in the heart of a dense concrete jungle. Although some museums have admission fees, you can still access the majority of the park for free. 1. Dutch/North Windmill This 75 ft tall windmill was originally constructed in 1902 to pump 1.5 million gallons of water a day throughout the city. It’s now surrounded by colorful tulips adding a bit of Netherlands vibes. 2. Portals of the Past Found on the shore of Lloyd Lake is what used to be the front entryway of an 1890s Nob Hill mansion ruined during the 1906 quake. It now serves as a memorial structure for the event. This setting is reminiscent of an Italian Neoclassical style landscape painting seen in museums. 3. Stow Lake The story goes: Over a century ago (before the 1906 earthquake), a mother accidentally drowned/lost her baby at Stow Lake. She then drowned in search of her baby. Of course, there are many other versions of this narrative but all boil down to a tragic death and a restless spirit. Rumor has it the lady makes her appearance at night still in search of her baby.

Но сразу же после этого печального события город был быстро и практически полностью перестроен. Теперь город сочетает в себе архитектуру оставшуюся после Викторианской эпохи и Современную архитектуру.
