Did you know that lichen isn’t just a fungus or a moss, but it’s actually a symbiosis of two organisms living together as one? I definitely didn’t. To be honest, I didn’t even know what lichen was up until a few years ago… We don’t have lichen where I live near the Twin Cities. Or at least, I haven’t noticed much here. However, if you make a drive out of the city… away from the air pollution… maybe up to the North Shore? You’ll find tons of lichen! “Lichens are also a good reflection of how well an environment is doing. If there is a lot of lichen in an area, that means that is a healthy, thriving, environment, with a higher level of air quality over time.” — U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Back to the symbiosis part: lichen are generally a partnership between fungus and algae (sometimes fungus and cyanobacteria). Sometimes symbiotic relationships in nature can be parasitic, but this relationship is truly mutualistic — meaning both organisms benefit. I get such a thrill when I see a new bird, and I absolutely love owls. I just saw my first Screech Owl. This is his photo taken with my phone through my binoculars. Through citizen science I learned that the following are pictured: Parry's beardtongue, Coulter's lupine, and pink fairy-duster. How cool are plants? I learned a few years ago from our trip to California about lupine, so I was very excited to correctly ID the lupine genus. I'm only just starting my plant ID journey, and it's a bit overwhelming. This vintage, buttery smooth waterfall is located about halfway (or 2/3) up the Leigh Lake trail in the Cabinet Mountains. Local AND organic, this particular image is aged nearly seven years and conjures visceral memories of hopping over small (but nevertheless open) chasms in the trail itself, which was apparently undergoing maintenance at the time. El Cap Tree ~1524-2024 Earlier this month, we lost the El Cap Tree, an 80-foot-tall Ponderosa Pine living under a shady roof on the right side of El Capitan. This tree somehow managed to find purchase and sustain life 400 feet up the side of this sheer granite face. The first climb done on El Capitan in 1952 was made to determine the species of this tree. Dwarfed by the cliff on which it made its home, the El Cap tree stood as a reminder to climbers, adventurers, and all Yosemite enthusiasts that with perseverance and tenacity, it is possible to succeed, even in the face of such gargantuan obstacles. 📍Ancestral Ahwahneechee land

Feeling very fortunate to have been able to experience two total solar eclipses in my life thus far. One where I live and one in my hometown. I’ve concluded that there can really only be two reactions to witnessing it. You either look up at the spectacle and feel that one is sufficient or you immediately decide you have to see as many as possible; forever chasing some version of the overview effect from down here on the surface.
