A beautiful sunny day for views from the inner lighthouse at Port Stephens. There was a lovely guide who told us all about the workings of the inner lighthouse in the 1800s and WW1 and WW2. There’s a small exhibition bit it is interesting. There’s also a restaurant but we decided to have an impromptu healthy food picnic instead sitting on the grass by the beach 🏖

INTRODUCTION POST LOOKING OUT TO SEA / LOOKING OUT TO SEE This is a photo series that I shot during lockdown, from March 23rd to June 25th 2020. I never thought of the Firth of Forth as nature, or anything particularly inspiring. Growing up in Newhaven, it always felt industrial, grey and dirty to me. When I was younger I didn't I think of going for a walk to take photos of it, to stare out at it in awe or even to really appreciate it. But over the past three months my perspective has flipped. Lockdown has given us all the time to look closer at our local surroundings, to hopefully see the beauty and appreciate it more. Staring out at the Firth of Forth over lockdown, I let nature illuminate what it had to offer. It was the weather, the sun, the changing conditions which showed me what my camera captured. The boats stopped to allow the water to make its own patterns, the planes no longer flew over the sky so the clouds could form naturally, sunsets could create neon landscapes, and lots of people were walking around the waterfront, staring out to sea. I started to really look at it, as Mary Oliver says, "I look; morning to night I am never done with looking. Looking, I mean not just standing around, but standing around as though with your arms open." I began to notice, and be obsessed by the fact, that each day the water and environment was ever-changing - its colour, patterns, speed and every single particle involved in its movement and view. The tides at different levels revealing new things for my camera to expose - seaweed, shopping trollies, shells, rocks and bubbles. It was impossible not to find something new to shoot, a different perspective each day roaming close to home. I have a new appreciation of the Firth of Forth and I hope that other people do too so that we can continue to care, It's about seeing and thinking about what you see. It's about appreciating and caring, being conscious of what is around us.. Sketching the view from our little chalet on the outskirts of George in the Western Cape… sad that we are probably half way through our trip but … what a trip so far… I’ve been doing a lot of quick sketches recently so it was awesome to just sit down with one of my favourite beers (Bone Crusher purchased directly @darlingbrew along our way). This took about 1.5 hours and it was fine to include the beer bottle and wall rather then focussing solely on the spectacular view 🙂. The sun is shining directly at me so sorry for the not so great photos!! 😅

Well this is a first for me!! Painting in the car! Day 2 of our 3 week honeymoon road trip around South Africa 🇿🇦 - we are en route to a town called Upington on the Orange River in the Kalahari, not far from the Namibian border. Actually quite happy with these 3 little vistas.
So happy I finally got to sketch jacarandas in Jacaranda City (Pretoria) - they’re so beautiful. Taking inspiration from @koosjekoene and sketching my foreground in one colour (red) and my background in a second colour (blue) - I actually used @derwentartofficial #inktensepencils for this as it’s what I had to hand… and all in 20 mins before work! Gotta keep that sketchy habit going 😬

Broken; the plum de-stoner. I enjoy the exercise of sketching different objects around the home. Sketching objects that have many different shapes and textures is a learning curve for me. I also think that spending time studying the form of an object gives you a better understanding of how it works and how it is designed. Sketching a mediative process that helps you understand things. Not just objects, but how life works. These ‘plum de-stoners’ worked beautifully when we first bought them. They were so good we purchased several for our friends and we’ve used them for a few years now. But, ultimately, the design was flawed with a weak spot meaning they were always going to break at some point.
