This single varietal, single tree bottling was made in collaboration with @sweet_acres_orchard_ from an unknown pollinator tree planted amongst hundreds of cortland, empire, and northern spy trees. After a long sleep as a storage unit, this creative space has awakened as the third residence for artists/writers/creatives—the off-grid La Cabane here at the Relais de Camont. Originally conceived and built as my own studio/office when I lived on the barge, it was great to see it get cleaned out and sorted by the A Team—writer Dylan J-A and the vagabond master organizer @carolynjohnson2977. This is a huge loss in ecological diversity and in community knowledge. In 2007 the pomologist (fruit tree cultivator) Liz Copas and cidermaker Nick Poole began a quest to find and identify old varieties of cider apple trees around Dorset. The search lasted more than a decade, taking them across the county, searching in forgotten orchards, hedgerows, and the corners of gardens. The Lost Orchards follows the journey they took. Their story resonates far beyond Dorset and will encourage readers to look closely at their surroundings and conserve their local orchards: particularly here in Devon. 📍Meaford, ON @windsweptcider Windswept cidery is a small (and very cute!) micro-cidery I had the pleasure of visiting earlier this summer in Meaford, Ontario. I sampled all the ciders they had to offer (I think there were 9?) as well as some of their Juns (similar to kombucha, but different) which was cool to try out for the first time! They craft ciders with organic and wild foraged fruit, focusing on bringing out the natural characteristics and varied conditions of each growing season in their taste 🥰. Everything is made small batch, depending on the harvest that year. There were a few tables and chairs to lounge on if you chose to, nothing super fancy but gets the job done for a quick stop in👌🏻. It's fantastically effervescent. Herbaceous right throughout. Sneaky ABV. All finishin very clean, with a light lingering bitterness. Overall - This was a very on point saison for its description. All branches are so weathered and extraordinary wild shapes as you can imagine. This year's Thanksgiving was going to have a different feel for our family even before the pandemic hit but we tried our best and there is still so much to be thankful for. As the autumn draws her heavy, dark blanket around our shoulders, consider finding a new cider-maker from which to buy a new lockdown libation. The apples & the pears have ripened, heralding the season of cider. Across the country, farmers & cider makers have harvested their orchards’ bounty and pressed the fruits into juice, ready for fermenting. But now, more than ever, these farmers and cider makers need our support. The @guardian has reported that, thanks to Covid, lack of demand has forced some farmers to leave their fruit to rot in the fields. ⠀ The Farms to Feed Us database is full of cider makers. @findcider makes fine ciders from Devon’s lost orchards. They work with farmers to bring forgotten orchards back to life, preventing the further decline and extinction of the abundance of local apple varieties. ⠀ ⠀ @wildingcider’s home orchard in Somerset has been planted as an orchard since at least 1760. Tonight I’m drinking @tiltedshed Lost Orchard cider which seemed fitting for a stroll around my own lost orchard, aka my overgrown yard complete with one gnarly, lopsided apple tree. I got a few (poor) snaps of the beautiful blossoms, but mostly they’re up too high for me to get good pictures of without climbing the tree, which I did contemplate but ultimately decided against. So this week, while snowshoeing in an undiscovered area of our property (that we assumed was forest), we stumbled upon what we are calling our "lost orchard". The previous owner had brought us on a wild goose chase to find a fabled tree that they had pruned and taken scion wood from. She couldn't find it, but we finally did! Poor thing is in bad shape. It would be one of the mother trees for what is close to 5 acres of older wild apples in this newly discovered area. We will take scion wood and graft it onto our rootstock to preserve whatever variety of apple it is - clearly it was much loved if they went to the trouble way back there!
