Suilven Diaries 👉🏻 SWIPE to see our highlights of the hike A twenty mile adventure through the wonderful Assynt scenery absolutely flew past in the fab company of @robcarrtours and @lewisjones1411 After years of feeling drawn to Suilven every time I climbed Stac Pollaidh, Cul Beag, Quinag and The Fiddler, conditions and availability finally aligned to make it a go. It was such a special moment for me personally when I reached the summit and it was quite magical just sitting there for ages, taking in the views and watching the rain clouds sweep past us to the north. It's Great British Beef Week this week - a wonderful chance to celebrate all that is good about our local beef, which is all grass fed. We have a long history of rearing cattle in our part of the world and drovers would have taken cows through this area to the markets in the south. There is still a lot of evidence of drovers' roads around and about and if you want to know more there's a fascinating exhibition about them, as well as this beautiful sculpture, at Dingwall Auction Mart. Well worth a visit (and the soup is great too). James Ferguson, the Scottish astronomer was born on this day in 1710 near Rothiemay in Banffshire. He became interested in stargazing while working as a shepherd, but his family could not afford to send him to University. Yet his book on astronomy was so impressive he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He travelled the length and breadth of the country explaining astronomy and that was his real skill - his ability to explain this aspect of science to ordinary people. He made models, known as orreries, which demonstrated the movements of the planets and the illustrations in his books helped to explain the theories of Sir Isaac Newton to the layperson. Interestingly a century later another Scotsman, Hugh Miller the geologist, would demonstrate the same skill for explaining science in simple terms. Both men were initially inspired by what they saw around them. In the case of Hugh Miller it was the amazing rock formations he saw around the Black Isle and for Ferguson it was the stunning night skies of the North of Scotland. DUN DORNAIGIL This impressive dun or broch was probably built between 2,000 and 2,500 years ago. It is a rare example of these impressive feats of prehistoric architecture as its interior has never been archaeologically investigated. These enigmatic towers are of drystone construction formed of two concentric walls, with a narrow entrance passage, and often small cells or chambers leading off the ground floor. A stone stair would have corkscrewed between the inner and outer walls to the top floor. Dun Dornaigil's walls still stand to almost 7 metres at the highest point, and they may have once been as high as 14 metres! It has a distinctive triangular lintel stone, the best surviving example in Scotland, making it one of the most impressive broch doorways in existence. Today the broch stands alone, and any external structures associated with the broch are no longer extant, perhaps destroyed to make way for the A838. We can't be sure why it was built here but it was likely a strategic location in the Iron Age, perhaps an important route-way. Golden Eagle Zipline. Found this whilst on our way around the north coast of Scotland. I said to Chris ‘oh wow, I’d do that’ he replied ‘really, do you want to?’ so I did 😁. It’s 37 metres above one of the most beautiful beaches in the Northern Highlands with amazing views, it was a bit scary when I had to step off the cliff but it was great fun & I surprised myself with being brave enough to take my hands off. #liveinthemoment #onlyliveonce #fiftyandadventurous #ceannabeinnebeach #northernhighlands #nc500 #northcoast500 #zipwire #goldeneaglezipline #durness
NC500 ❤️⛰️🏴 A huge thank you to @motorhomeholidayco for facilitating this unbelievable experience in the Scottish Highlands. This beauty of a Motorhome joined us on 500 mile adventure through some of the most incredible roads in the UK. I've got a RIDICULOUS amount of photos to get through, so expect lots of NC500 posts over the next few weeks! Truly a bucketlist trip and if you're looking to do it yourself I cannot recommend the team there high enough!
