In 1932, when Peter Weber bought his 8.8 acre orange grove at Eighth & McKinley, just beyond Riverside’s city limits at Chicago Avenue, Eighth Street was a two-lane country road populated by orange groves. Within the decade, it became part of Highway 395 on a route between March Field to Downtown, then veered north. As the years went on, Eighth Street / Highway 395 came to be known as “Motel Row” – hardly the rural environment Weber originally imagined. By the time the Weber House stopped construction in 1938, the El Camino Motel was right next door with its huge, buzzing neon sign and La Casa Contenta motel & restaurant was just across the increasingly-busy street. In the early ‘60s, surrounded by a dozen or so motels, Weber began plotting his escape to coastal North San Diego county. It’s chilling to think that even after Weber’s passing in the early ‘80s, his landmark home was threatened with demolition from yet another hotel! #iloveriverside #loveoldhouses

Thought you would like to see a work in progress shot of the wool appliqué Historic Neighborhood. Don’t you just love it? 😍 pattern is in the works and the first house will be out soon!!! I have a bank building and two house left to add. This project has been so much fun from picking out the houses, creating the patterns selecting the wool fabrics and the loads of embroidery stitches. I think you will be seeing more wool appliqué from me in the future. I have been working on an original wool appliqué quillt filled with historic houses. I realized that I have been sharing daily stitch updates over on Threads but haven’t posted much over here. I love how each house is stitching up and the decorative appliqué stitches make everything pop.
