Peel Castle, Isle of Man. Honestly, we parked up, peeked down at the water, and gasped! The castle itself was built in the 11th century by Magnus Barefoot, King of Norway and King of the Isles, which included Man. It was great fun to wonder around and take in the views of Northern Ireland and southern Scotland in the distance. Peel itself has a gorgeous beach and, most importantly, a well-stocked ice cream parlour. St Patrick’s Isle, Peel The tiny island and Viking castle on St Patrick's Isle, Peel, Isle of Man is spectacular when approaching from a boat, from the nearby hill which overlooks the town of Peel, and whilst looking down from a drone above. The Viking King, with the impressive name of Magnus Barelegs, began building the Castle on St. Patrick’s Isle in the 11th Century. The Castle was then expanded and modernised, taking its current shape during the English Civil War. The large sailing boat on the jetty is the Jubilee Sailing Trust yacht which was moored at Peel. In search of a Viking king that took us down a country lane and across old railway tracks, we ended up finding the grave of Magnus Barelegs (1073 – 24 August 1103) a Norwegian Viking buried in Downpatrick. He was the last Norwegian king to have died in battle outside of his homeland.
