#Midnights #TaylorSwift #AlbumReview - Part 2 of 6 #VigilanteShit has just disproved that claim. It's still not what I'd call a good song but the narrative is much easier to follow and the beat is much more distinctive. #Bejeweled still has that pop-trap sound but it's a tad more upbeat this time. Again though, it's completely unmemorable. #Labyrinth has hints of Folklore but is nowhere near as good. The high notes feel forced and the rest is dull and miserable. Even more ridiculous ghostly wailing at the end ("I'm falling in love"). Who on earth thinks that shit sounds good? #Karma is one of the few songs where she's singing in her usual register and I think that's the sole reason I don't mind it. Lyrically though, this album hasn't made me think at any point except for VS. There's just no point to any of these songs. #SweetNothing is a big shift in sound and all the better for it. Still not hooked on the lyrics but it's about as dreamy and close to the theme of Midnights as we get. #Mastermind is a forgettable closer. I zoned out for the whole song. What a big fat letdown that was. I may as well listen to the 3 'bonus' songs now and just get it over and done with. #HitsDifferent shouldn't be relegated to deluxe tracklist status as it's one of the few average-good songs on the whole album. As I've maintained throughout, it's far from exceptional, though if the rest of the album sounded like this, it would've been a major improvement to how it sounds now. I can't even remember how the original version of YOYOK sounds and I only listened to it about 20 minutes ago. The strings remix is alright. I wouldn't class this as a remix as it's still a slow song. #Midnights #TaylorSwift #AlbumReview - Part 3 of 6 The piano remix of SN is also giving me major Folklore vibes. This might've just made it to best track on the album. Funny how changing the arrangement can give me such nostalgia for Folklore and make me feel so dreamy and calm. If this album has one saving grace, this is it. I'm on a roll now so let's just finish off with the 3am edition. #TheGreatWar: 5 seconds in and I knew I'd heard this song before. Before today, I haven't listened to any song from this album in full but oddly enough, they played this song on the radio 2 weeks ago. I didn't know which song it was but I knew exactly who was singing it. I vividly remember thinking it's not the type of song that belongs on radio so why are they playing it? That said, the melody clearly stuck with me. I'm getting bored of writing this but it's another average song. One of the better ones for sure and unlike the majority of the main album, this track has a very strong identity but it's just not a song I'd want to play over and over. Then again, compared to most of Midnights, this is a highlight. The production on #BiggerThanTheWholeSky is miles better than most of what we got on the standard album. This is what we expect from someone at her level and I say that as someone who has criticized more than a few of her albums. There's a very serene quality about this one. If the album had followed in the direction of these last two songs, she would've had a lot more positive reviews. I know what most media outlets and fans are saying but a quick Google search shows this album has divided plenty more people than just myself. #Midnights #TaylorSwift #AlbumReview - Part 4 of 6 I'm not so fussed on #Paris. It's another complete change of direction and while the main album needed that (cohesive yes but also incredibly boring), 3am was off to a good start with this new sound and then Paris just made everything loud and slightly obnoxious. It's a track which could maybe work on an album like Lover but it's still slightly filler to me. I haven't got a clue what #HighInfidelity is about. Is it an affair? I kind of like it, more the melody than the lyrics and how she sings. Speaking of the lyrics, they're very repetitive and it's becoming annoying. There's also not much tone in her voice throughout. This one feels like a good bridge between the standard edition and these bonus tracks. Urgh great. We're back to that trap-inspired sound on #Glitch. I'm not going to say it's as bad as some of the earlier songs but it's not good either. Does anyone actually like how this song sounds? Everything about it feels lazy and she sounds half dead. I love how #WouldveCouldveShouldve started off very dark and brooding but it lost its charm during the chorus. The vocals are strong. Is this the one about John Mayer? I know a lot of the songs are rumoured to be about various celebrities she hates and I can't help but think "woman, grow up". You're allowed to use your experiences to write songs about how you feel and to make up characters but when you do it this often, it literally is a case of change the record. Same with Demi and 29, I don't know their exes personally and it doesn't affect me in the slightest what they write about but damn does it annoy me when they use these songs to paint them as predators. #Midnights #TaylorSwift #AlbumReview - Part 5 of 6 in both cases the age gaps are questionable and I wouldn't really think highly of either of those men if I knew them personally but in both Taylor's and Demi's case, they chose to be in those relationships. 'Exposing' these men all these years later when they haven't actually done anything illegal seems vindictive to me. Again, if I were in my early 30s, I wouldn't be looking to date a 19/20 year old but to each their own. If at the time you're happy and you love each other, that's your business. I know there are more stories about both exes and I'm not defending them; I just don't like this airing of dirty laundry in public. The idea of recording a song about being groomed and finding a sound to go with it seems off to me. I don't think those feelings are something you should try and capitalise on. And we finish with yet another pop-trap beat. Even watching the lyric video for #DearReader, I still can't understand what she's trying to say. She's just talking crap. I'm no Shakespeare but I can find meaning in words and yet with Taylor Swift, I often have no idea what her point is so it makes me laugh when people surmise in the comments and talk about how deep the lyrics are as I'm wondering if we're listening to the same song. Reading between the lines isn't for everyone I guess. And we have those infamous heavily edited vocals again at the end. What is the obsession with doing this? That sound isn't pleasing to anybody. This may as well have just been on the standard album because it fits in with the majority of the crap that was on it. #Midnights #TaylorSwift #AlbumReview - Part 6 of 6 I understand people have different tastes in music and mine isn't always going to be the right opinion but even most Swifties would have to agree if this album was recorded by anyone other than Taylor, they would never listen to it and find meaning in the lyrics. It's nice to see artists smashing records after so many years in the business but only when the songs and albums are deserving of those accolades and Midnights isn't. You can argue with me till the cows come home; I haven't written this review to slag off Taylor or her fans, I've written it to put my thoughts about the album into words as I'm listening to it. Admittedly, this is only my first time hearing the album and sometimes, it takes a few listens for songs to grow on you but the overall sound is not for me. Best songs - Sweet Nothing (The Piano Remix) - The Great War (I wouldn't specifically call it brilliant but it stood out more than the majority of the standard tracks) - Bigger Than The Whole Sky Average (good) - Karma - Sweet Nothing - Hits Different - Would've Could've Should've Average (filler) - Anti Hero - You're On Your Own Kid - Vigilante Shit - You're On Your Own Kid (The Strings Remix) - Paris - High Infidelity Forgettable/boring - Snow On The Beach - Midnight Rain - Question...? - Bejeweled - Labyrinth - Mastermind - Glitch - Dear Reader Terrible - Lavender Haze - Maroon So of 23 songs, 7 were good or better, 6 were average or filler, 8 were completely forgettable and 2 I hated. I'm surprised how many people liked LH. Maybe I'll change my opinion on some of these songs next listen but as first impressions go, listening to this album was a task. midnights is an album that made me feel a nervous feeling in the pit of my stomach once again. i feel like i should have learned by now that whatever move this mastermind makes next, it will be unwaveringly bejeweled and a true work of art. • midnights has the concept of “what keeps you up at night?”. for me, midnights represents all the long, lonely nights i would spend alone in my early adulthood, trying to find who i was, and find my place in the world. growing up with a constant fear of change, one thing i always had was music. i might have no musical talent myself, but listening to lyrics, beats, sounds, and riffs was always a familiar comfort to me. in my safe, happy space, no one was going to leave, and no one was going to hurt me. • to some extent, i still feel like that now, and a lot deeper in some ways as well. from songs like you’re on your own, kid, which talks about how yes, you’re alone in the world, you might feel like you can’t do something, but guess what? you have always only been just you. you can do ANYTHING; to labyrinth, tackling the idea of realisation, fear, and acceptance of falling in love and wrestling with the idea in your own head of how it managed to come to fruition in the first place; to the great war, how love always prevails and will conquer all, even in the darkest, most twisted of times. it’s the best amalgamation of 1989, reputation, and folklore possible, and every record it’s broken is unbelievably justified. i fall more and more in love with the album every time i hear it. • @taylorswift - i will always root for the anti-hero. thank you for existing. • ALSO SIDE NOTE CAN THE HEART BE NOTED ON MY VINYL PLEASE AND THANK YOU. Who else ordered all of the vinyl variants for Midnights???? You know I had to! It’s been over a week now since @taylorswift announced her 10th studio album Midnights and you guys I seriously haven’t stopped thinking about anything else since! Thank god I had a five day weekend because I was struggling to concentrate at work lol. I haven’t heard one song from this album yet but I already know that it’s going to be one of my top favorites and the one I’m going to relate to the most. We aren’t sure about what the genre is going to be yet but based on the photos we have seen and the fact that the tracklist is listed on the front, it could very much be a 60s/70s soft rock album which I’m very very VERY intrigued by! I absolutely can’t wait and these vinyl variants made me even more excited to listen to this album!! My favorites are the Moonstone Blue and the Jade Green.
