In February, we were able to see for ourselves at the Umani Reintegration Unit that Maktao is still the kind boy he was at the nursery. He is very nice towards the little babies Amali and Kapei. A few years ago the hubby and I started to foster orphaned elephants and a rhino @sheldricktrust. Meanwhile we foster 6 elephants and a young rhino. At the start of it we already decided: we’ll go and visit them. Some of them already moved on and are reintegrating back into the wild. One passed away…. Being at that nursery and seeing Roho and Bondeni living their best lives… made us so happy. See you next year.“, I couldn’t know that only few months later the world would change. 2020 was one of the most challenging years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It had made living life quite hard for people all over the world. But even if a bad period lasts for such a long time, it will not last forever. I’ve been very fortunate to have seen many elephants in the wild (I could do with more encounters ... but that won’t be any time soon I guess 😬). Some of these encounters were from a safe distance and others ... were up close and personal. Not just kids but baby elephants "like rough and tumble play too" as is clearly visible in a short video shared on Twitter by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. The two-minute clip, shot at the Nairobi Nursery of the centre, shows two baby elephants enjoying their tussle game. Maktao, one of the elephants, pushed the other with his trunk and waited for him to retort. But guess what it was busy doing? 📸 @sheldricktrust We caught Maktao in a contemplative moment. After all the recent graduations, he is now one of the oldest boys at the Nursery. While he was close with many of the outgoing orphans, particularly Sattao and Musiara, he isn’t short on friends here in Nairobi. Kiombo, who shares his gentle temperament, has always been a favorite playmate. We’ve also been pleasantly surprised to see a friendship blossoming between Maktao and his neighbor, Larro. When they were younger, they had quite a contentious relationship and often pushed each other around. Now, they happily browse together and even have their own wrestling games! Maktao is always on the lookout for a friend to climb on. The only problem is that he doesn’t know his own size — he’s becoming quite a big bull — and likes to target the smallest babies, because they’re easy to scale. Luckily, Kiasa has their corner! She keeps herself very busy charging around keeping Maktao away from little Roho and Naleku. Sometimes Maktao even tries to sneak back to them, as he’s such a playful fellow, but Kiasa is always clued into his plans and chases him off.
