Over the past two months, Leelja Roessler, a Molecular Cell Biology and Immunology student from the University of Tübingen, in Germany, was in the Retinal Dysfunction and Neuroinflammation Lab doing an internship. The 2023 Young Investigator Paper of the Year in Honour of Mark Smith goes to Deniz Karabag for the article "Characterizing microglial senescence: Tau as a key player". Congratulations! 👏 This original study demonstrates that exposure of cultured microglia to tau enhances senescence - irreversible arrest of cell proliferation linked to aging - as measured phenotypically and neurochemically. In essence, this shifts the spotlight from brain neurons to microglia as key partners in the induction and worsening of Alzheimer’s disease characteristics. The topic is critical for understanding mechanisms of age-dependent microglial alterations. The JNC Editors found this to be an excellent study and the results present with high fundamental and translational value. Susanne Wolf is a Group Leader at the Max Delbrück Center, where she leads the research group of #Psychoneuroimmunology, and Principal Investigator at Charité Medical University in Berlin. She is a neuroimmunologist, interested in body-brain interactions and how they influence human behavior. She focuses on the cross-talk between the central nervous and the immune system in the context of psychiatric disorders. In particular, she studies the #microglia, the immune cells of the brain. Her team employs mouse models and human samples to understand how these cells are affected in diseases like #schizophrenia, #autism, and #depression to identify new treatments. She is a Principal Investigator in the DFG German Research Foundation Priority Project SPP2395, a consortium of scientists from diverse disciplines such as neurobiology, psychiatry, microbiology, metabolic research, and immunology in which she pursues a systemic approach towards the treatment of mental disorders. Trauma führt zu Neuroinflammation. Das neurolimbische System ist ein komplexes Netzwerk im Gehirn, das Emotionen, Motivation und Belohnungsverarbeitung steuert. Schlüsselregionen sind die Amygdala, der Hippocampus und der Nucleus accumbens. Die Amygdala spielt eine zentrale Rolle bei der Verarbeitung von Emotionen wie Angst und Vergnügen. Der Hippocampus ist wichtig für Gedächtnis und räumliche Navigation. Der Nucleus accumbens beeinflusst das Belohnungssystem, Motivation und Lernen. Gemeinsam regulieren sie emotionale Reaktionen, Lernen und Entscheidungsfindung. Dysfunktion im neurolimbischen System wird mit psychiatrischen Störungen und Sucht in Verbindung gebracht. Mikroglia sind die weißen Blutzellen des Gehirns, die es vor Bedrohungen schützen und neuronale Netzwerke formen, u.a. durch synaptische Beschneidung, Neuroplastizität und Neuroinflammation. Mikrogliale Aktivierung und das ‚Mikrogliale Aktivierungssyndrom‘ stehen im Fokus meiner Forschung. Trauma kann Gliazellen aktivieren, was zu Neuroinflammation, oxidativem/nitrosativem Stress, Regulationsstörungen von Neurotransmittern und neuroendokrinen Dysfunktionen führen kann. Forschung zeigt, dass Trauma und Belastung die Mikroglia im neurolimbischen System aktivieren, was zu übermäßiger Neuroinflammation führt. Das ist eine Hauptursache für PTSD-Symptome. Die Pharmaindustrie entwickelt Medikamente, die die neuroinflammatorische Reaktion im Gehirn reduzieren, um PTSD zu behandeln. Die Traumarekonstruktion erfordert die Arbeit an gestörter Physiologie und Verhalten. Olá pessoal! É com enorme prazer que compartilho esta publicação que acabou de sair do forninho no "European Journal of Neuroscience", revista parceira da @fens_org com insights do que há de mais avançado sobre Interações Neuroimunes. A temática foi abordada durante o FENS-Hertie Winter School que ocorreu no início do ano passado (edição 2022). Nós, jovens pesquisadores participantes reunimos todos os temas abordados de maneira super completa neste editorial, a convite do editor da revista, Antoine Adamantidis. Foi uma honra participar, não apenas do curso, como no processo de produção deste artigo em parceria com pesquisadores brasileiros e internacionais que eu tive o grande prazer de conhecer e interagir.
