After updating Gothmog’s Underling I’m now planning for a little photography piece recreating the “Age of Men is over” scene. For this though I needed a dying Madril. Luckily I still had his head and Sword arm left over from my Boromir conversion; I attached these to an old Númenórean and gave him a quick paint job. Only his right side will end up being visible so the inaccuracies and unpainted half shouldn’t be noticeable. Another spontaneous refurbishment; yesterday I went back and updated my “Gothmog’s Underling” conversion. The initial attempt I did a year or so ago (pic 4) was bothering me for a couple of reasons, most predominantly the very obvious Snaga head-swap and the rather uninspired pose, that was relatively unchanged from the Morannon Orc base model. So I went back and repositioned his arms to recreate his somewhat hunched over appearance (pic 5), gave him the correct weapon and finally re-sculpted his face by reducing his smile and widening the nostrils to better match his movie appearance (pic 6). Whilst in the process of revisiting my Cirith Ungol army I wanted to have a better crack at a Mordor Uruk-hai themed Shaman, as my original was simply the “Fighting Uruk-hai Command” sculpt (used here as the base model). I wanted to recreate the very cool leather headpieces seen in ROTK (pic 6) which previously I never attempted due to it being too fiddly. So here he is, much better I think? I spent most of today toiling over a rather difficult decision, looking at one of my most completed armies (and actually one of the first real project for this page) Cirith Ungol. I had a blast converting up Mordor Uruks using the Isengard Scouts and truly feel a lot of my conversion work still holds up. However the painting side does not. They’re 2 years old at this point and I’ve learnt a lot since, so looking at them now is rather unsatisfying, which is a shame. So today I bit the bullet and repainted this chap as a test and am thrilled with the upgrade compared to my 2022 efforts (pic 4). The key improvements I aimed to make: - Darker, less glossy leathers - Rusted armour - Eye pupils - Smoother tonal blending - Cleaner highlights And of course re-basing him in a grey, rocky theme to match the rest of my Mordor lads. With the test being a success my plans moving forward for the rest of the faction will be a complete repaint for most of the models. Alongside all this I also have ideas for a Cirith Ungol display board (more on that later) and to redo some of the photography work I did for the Mordor Uruk profile cards. So yeah, lots of work ahead but I’m all for progression in the hobby so being able to breathe fresh life into old projects and improve upon past models always feels good.
