“Le Grand Soir” is a French phrase that connotes “the big night” in English, but also the future—a better, egalitarian, revolutionary future. The expression from the late 19th and early 20th century is the title of the latest work by Moroccan-French artist Yto Barrada (@ytobarrada) and the latest to be installed at MoMA PS1 (@momaps1). From the outside looking in Barrada’s Le Grand Soir rises from the gravel like a late modernist playground, perhaps like something Aldo van Eyck would have designed for postwar Rotterdam. Platonic shapes (cubes and triangles) are stacked into pyramids and lacquered in secondary colors from the CIAM Grid (green, red, yellow, iris, and blue). The blocks have chamfered corners and edges to encourage young ones to play. But upon closer inspection, and after speaking with Barrada about her own familial history, background, and ethos, one realizes it’s something else indeed—a manifesto made of concrete. All eyes are on Venice 👀 MoMA PS1 is proud to see nearly 30 artists from our history represented in this year's Venice Biennale! @Pacitaabad, whose exhibition is currently on view, and Frieda Toranzo Jaeger (@priupit), whose solo show debuted in fall of 2022, are both included in the international exhibition "Foreigners Everywhere" alongside artists like Rafa al-Nasiri and Dia al-Azzawi from the 2019 exhibition "Theater of Operations: The Gulf Wars 1991-2011" and @AhmedMorsiStudio from "Greater New York 2021". Plus, three artists—Onyeka Igwe (@memoriesofabiglife), Precious Okoyomon (@devilintraining_), and Yinka Shonibare (@shonibarestudio)—are part of the ambitious group presentation "Nigeria Imaginary," taking place in the Nigerian national pavilion. EXHIBITION | Spanning Pacita Abad’s 32-year career, MoMA PS1 presents the first retrospective of the renowned Filipina-American artist. Co-curated by Victoria Sung and Ruba Katrib, the exhibition includes more than 100 works - most of which have never been on public view in the US prior to this - showcasing her experiments across mediums, including textiles, works on paper, costumes, and ceramics. ‘Largely self-taught, Abad is best known for her trapuntos, quilted paintings made by stitching and stuffing her canvases as opposed to stretching them over a wood frame. After moving to the United States in 1970 to escape political persecution from the authoritarian Marcos regime, Abad sought to give visibility to political refugees and oppressed peoples through her work.’ Running until 2 September 2024, the exhibition is accompanied by the first major publication on Abad’s work. Edited with text by Victoria Sung and including contributions from Julia Bryan-Wilson, Nancy Lim, Ruba Katrib, Xiaoyu Weng, and Matthew Villar Miranda, it also features a comprehensive oral history by Pio Abad and Sung. Combining sewing, collage, painting on quilted blankets, she weaves politics and cultural imagery into her signature MASK pictures. During her lifetime @pacitaabad travelled to over 60 countries. 🗺️ 🌍 In each of the places she visited, the artist immersed herself in local communities of makers. This cultural exchange often involved global masking traditions used in religious, ceremonial, and artistic contexts. Abad saw masks as vessels for both individual expression and collective storytelling, and she featured them in her series "Masks from Six Continents."
