When we plan our epic summer trips, we spend countless hours researching and preparing. We head into each park and hike as prepared as we can be. But we naturally focus our energies on the beginning of the trip and so we just tend to be a little less prepared for things at the end of the summer. And so this year we pulled into Glacier National Park in Montana with little more than strong legs, backpacking permits, and vague memories of YouTube videos that had informed our itinerary. We set off on a three-day, two-night backpacking trip from Kintla Lake and were rewarded with practical perfection. A heat wave was lingering but shade and a cool breeze greeted us at our campsite at Upper Kintla Lake. After a heavy climb up to Boulder Pass, we were overwhelmed with miles of amazing scenery that kept us company until just before we reached our second campsite at Brown Pass. Kelly & I left our gear at camp and made a side trip down to Lake Frances and soaked in views of a glacier feeding an aquamarine lake via a waterfall of more than 100 feet. And then, the last morning we wound down the mountains with ripe thimbleberries and sustained views of Bowman Lake. And finally, months later and into a new year, we have finished up our own YouTube video of this section of our summer, a backpacking trip from Kintla to Bowman Lake with our friend @d_hitchhiking . A great morning wandering the Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge here in NW Montana. This is a 4000+ acre riparian area where over 200 species of birds hang out in countless potholes of water - including a large reservoir. This sanctuary is the result of a glacial moraine during the ice age. It's named after Chief Joseph Ninepipes - a Salish Chief. This point would have been under 400 feet of water spread over hundreds of miles 15,000 years ago as part of Glacial Lake Missoula. www.brianjenningsphotography.com

The highlight of last weekend for Shae and Gatlin was harvesting Shae's first mountain lion. She got her wish - Taylor's dogs Brute and Bandit treed it for her and I'm confident that the memory will last a life time. They worked pretty hard for it and though they were tired and sore, by the look on their faces every time they talk about it, it was worth it. So grateful for our friends Taylor and Billie for making this experience possible. We appreciate you guys so much!
