Appealing from many photographic and historical angles. • Known as Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, King of the Missions. Founded in 1798, by Padre Fermín Francisco de Lasuén, successor to Padre Junipero Serra, Mission San Luis Rey was named after St. Louis IX, King of France, who lived during the 13th century. The history of the San Luis Rey area reflects five periods of occupation: Luiseño Indian, Spanish Mission, Mexican Secularization, American Military, and Twentieth Century Restoration. • In 1892, a group of Franciscans from Zacatecas, Mexico sought refuge in California and asked the Bishop for a site to move their novitiate. They were assigned to San Luis Rey under the guidance of Fr. Joseph Jeremiah O’Keefe. Fr. Dead Horse Point State Park outside Moab in eastern Utah is breathtakingly brilliant in its own right: red sandstone cliffs, 2,000-foot drop-offs, the twisting Colorado River, distant canyons, towering snow-capped mountains, bluffs, buttes — you name it. But add in dramatic early morning light, passing rain showers, and a vibrant rainbow right at the apex of the horseshoe bend in the Colorado (with a hint of a double rainbow forming in the background), and, well, I just don't even have the words. My wife and I left Grand Junction, Colorado, at 4 a.m. to arrive in the park in time for sunrise, and the show we witnessed was more spectacular than we could possibly have dreamed. I was the first person to reach the falls yesterday but only by a few minutes. By the time I got my camera out and started surveying the scene for a composition I could see the calvacade of people hiking up in the distance. So I just picked a spot and quickly snapped a few long exposures literally as people were walking up behind me. I was hoping I'd get a chance to wait for the clouds to cover the sun a little bit because the battle between light and shadows was hard to work with, but I did my best under the circumstances. I'm gonna need to go back earlier on a weekday and try again. It's a very pretty area, though, and I enjoyed the time I spent hiking up and down the creek.

Valley of Dreams East (images 2, 4) ✨COMMENT “New Mexico hikes” to get a guide to each one with tips to find these formations ✨ All 3 of these hikes are relatively short and easy, but they do require way finding as AllTrails is not the most accurate (for King of Wings) and there isn’t a clear trail for parts of them. Take plenty of water - there is no shade to cool you off or protect you from the sun. Have a full tank of gas and all the food you need - there are no facilities anywhere nearby (that also means you need to pack everything back out with you). Your best bet for a hotel nearby is in Farmington, New Mexico. From there it is about an hour to an hour and a half drive to the three hikes. You will need 4-wheel drive and high clearance for the last part of each of these drives as the road gets deep ruts and may be impassable when wet. Watch out for wild horses in the area and blocking the road. We’ve seen them every time we’ve been out there, and I love stopping to watch them (images 5 and 10).
