A dream come true! ☁️⋆⁺🖤 That grand white flower adorned with clear-edged spots of darkest maroon, and those shimmering tessellated leaves—it can be no other than 𝘗𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘭𝘶𝘮 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘭𝘶𝘮, one of my top wishlist plants opening its bloom. I had been looking for this species for quite some time already and was lucky enough to find one within the EU—with a bud! Most fortunately, the plant survived shipping and arrived without a scratch (thanks to @popow_orchids_aroids for excellent packing, as always!). My biggest worry was whether the bud would blast after such a shock, but here it is, expanding slowly but surely. 🌱 I’m eagerly waiting for it to spread its petals and sepals fully for more photos, and also to continue my painting of the plant, but couldn’t resist sharing this flower right away. I will also write some species information as well as care requirements later, which I also need to study thoroughly myself. Crying leaf? Fret not; they are happy tears! 🌱˚⋆🖤 ⊹ At times, water droplets might appear at the margins of leaves. This phenomenon is called guttation, and guttation droplets are produced by the plants themselves as part of maintaining water balance. 💧 ⊹ Guttation may occur due to several reasons, most often in darkness and high humidity. In normal conditions, during which light is plentiful, plants release water vapor through their leaf stomata. This transpiration process pulls water from the soil through the roots into the foliage. ↑🪴 ⊹ But what about in darkness when stomata are usually closed? Or when high humidity doesn’t allow water to evaporate as vapour? Plants still need water to maintain their structure and physiological processes, thus they need to somehow suck in water from the soil without transpirational pull. They can achieve such water intake by actively pumping water from the soil inside the root cells using transporter and channel proteins. This active transport results in the so-called root pressure, which assures water intake even in conditions that don’t allow transpiration. 🌑 ⊹ We’ve all encountered guttation droplets on grass blades, perhaps mistaking them for morning dew. Houseplants can, and often do, produce guttation droplets as well. I usually see guttation more commonly in aroids, such as in this newly emerging leaf of 𝐴𝑛𝑡ℎ𝑢𝑟𝑖𝑢𝑚 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑣𝑖𝑢𝑚. The droplets can be usually spotted at the leaf margins, where anatomical structures called hydathodes are located. Hydathodes cannot be actively adjusted like stomatal pores but rather act as protection valves, allowing any excess water to escape and thus preventing water from accumulating in the leaves’ internal spaces. 🌧️ ⊹ In short, guttation droplets indicate that there is plenty of water available, but a plant cannot get rid of it in any other way than by pushing it out through hydathodes. It’s also an indicator that the roots are functional and healthy, capable of producing root pressure. So, the next time you see these droplets, take it as a good omen! 🌿🤍

The CLARET CUP HEDGEHOG cactus is native to the USA’s southwest desert. The scientific name is Echinocereus triglochidaiatus. ‘Echinos’ is Greek for ‘hedgehog’, and ‘triglochidiatus’ means ‘three barbed bristles’ (referring to the cluster spine trios). With a small round and spiny body, hedgehog is the perfect name for it! It’s also known as Kingcup Cactus, Strawberry Cactus, or Crimson Cactus. If you’re lucky like me, you’d get to see one blooming with its large, waxy flowers, which form the shape of a cup. The flowers last for several days, and their vibrant color and plentitude of nectar attract their pollinators: hummingbirds and bees. The wax coating and spines keep in water and keep out herbivores. Interestingly, they used to be collected by Native Americans, who would burn the spines off and mash the stems, before adding sugar and baking it into sweet cakes. In the coolness of the night, its pores (stomata) open to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. During the day, the pores are kept closed during photosynthesis. If you have one of these, you know to give it plenty of light (though too much direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day may scorch it—especially if it’s young), otherwise it won’t thrive (and likely won’t flower). The AFRICAN MILK TREE goes by quite a few names, including: Candelabra Cactus, Cathedral Cactus, Friendship Cactus, Good Luck Cactus, Euphorbia Trigona. Several of these cactus names come from the fact that it looks like a cactus (maybe because it has thorns!)—even though it isn’t! It’s native to Central Africa, and popular in South America and the Mediterranean—but can be grown outdoors in the USA in arid states that don’t drop below 50 degrees at night. This succulent grows quickly (1-2 feet/year), so people like to grow it as a hedge. It grows up to 9 feet tall—but only about half that if grown inside. It stays green with light green sprouts, and some have bright reds later in its growing season. It has shallow roots, so it needs to be kept properly pruned to keep it from toppling over. However, be careful where you decide to grow it, because its sap is toxic to humans and pets—irritating the eyes, mouth, and skin (even causing blisters and convulsions—if swallowed).
