For the love ❤️ of Italian 🇮🇹 @alessi_official! 🙌🏻 . Alessi is one of my favorite design companies, since they make great and playful conversation pieces for the dinner table (among other things). . The happy couple at the front is ”Mr. and Mrs. Chin”. 🎎 This Alessi salt and pepper set is from 2004 and 2005. This is a depiction of the imperial family. It was a special edition by the National Palace Museum of Taiwan 🇹🇼 and Alessi in cooperation. . The collaboration between Alessi and the National Palace Museum of Taiwan grew out of the museum’s wish to open itself yet further to the international scene, and to encourage greater awareness of Chinese history and culture in the West. . They asked Stefano Giovannoni and Rumiko Takeda to imagine and design a sort of mascot for the new Museum of the 21st Century. From this collaboration came the “Family of Mr. Chin” series, each of whom represents a specific household function such being a kitchen timer, salt & pepper set, egg cup and so on. 💚 The ”A di Alessi” orange 🧡”Lilliput” salt and pepper set at the back, model ASG02, from 2003, is also a fun item for the dining table. The little thermoplastic resin shakers are fitted with magnetic feet that allows them to cling to the central wire pole and stainless steel base. Gazing at this exquisite Jade & Diamond ring by Caratell Singapore, I am reminded of something I learnt at the National Palace Museum in Taiwan. The oldest available definition of yu or Jade comes from the first Chinese dictionary Shuowen Jiezi (100 C.E.), by Xu Shen, a philologist of the Eastern Han Dynasty. It describes Jade as a "beautiful stone with 5 properties (virtues): - gentle & subtle sheen - consistency inside & out - clear, melodious & far-reaching sound when struck - hardness, breakable yet never bendable - polished squareness without sharp edges” According to Xu, these correspond to the 5 praiseworthy virtues of a fine gentleman: benevolence, Rectitude, wisdom, courage, & integrity.
