Hello New Day! The joy of reciprocity! I created the first one for an art event at Osamequin Farm last weekend, and when I went to pick up the circle, I was gifted with dafodils (thanks Sarah!!!) that I used for today’s circle. (See next post)

This cottage and these grounds welcomed me like a big hug a year ago. The trees have heard my thoughts and prayers. They've heard the laughter and conversation of friends and family. They watched over me and I felt their protection. We've gone through all of the seasons together. Growth, harvest, letting go, stillness - the beauty of all 365 days. The rhythm of being with them day after day has changed the rhythm of my life. I'm softer, yet stronger. Yielding, yet resolute. Calmer, yet excited. Content, yet full of wanderlust. I am forever grateful for their influence, their teaching, their care and keeping of me. In Sankrit, Mandala means "container of sacred essence, energy or spirit". So I set out on a quest to make a mandala to honor this special place. All in all, it took six hours of foraging and designing to create this 10 foot offering. It was a very connecting experience. The next day the winds of Ian started to blow in so I gathered up some pieces and made smudge sticks to remember it by. Do you actively thank your surroundings for the beauty they show you all year round? Or even the flowers you buy for your home as they start to die? It's a beautiful ceremony to try. Two accounts that inspire me are morningaltars and naturcirkler. I believe they will move you to create one too. The elements from the inside out are: Moss, pecans, dogwood berries, persimmons, magnolia leaves, dried daylily stems, angel's blush hydrangea leaves and blooms, acorns, roses, persimmon tops, juniper branches, pinecones, walnuts and magnolia cones. p.s. When I take something from nature I try and always leave an offering behind. Today’s Land Art I was on a move yesterday. So, here is my creation dedicated to Earth Day. I came across James Lovelock’s Gaia theory in my early twenties. Since I began working as a land artist, I have observed many phenomena in me and other living/ non-living things which the theory makes sense. I have a little place I treat as my altar in my walk. My family calls it ‘the prayer gate’. We missed our fall leaves mandala last season…this spring mandala reminds me of the August/September pookalams and is a welcome activity. For two hours we switched off most gadgets (except fridge and aquarium) to observe Earth hour/s. May every day be an earth day…may do more mandalas:)

Days 61 and 62 I am posting 2 days this morning from yesterday and the day before. I had very little time on day 61 and the difference might be minute, but I did attach all of the bear pieces to each other, and I added details to one of the trees. It’s tempting to leave that photo out, but even on a super busy day I did manage to take a breath and connect with my art practice. For day 62, I would say this piece is nearing completion. In my usual fashion, elements have occurred to me in an organic way. I’ve added a few salmon berries, which breaks up the brown of the brown bears. Plus the berries bring the salmon colors full circle. They weren’t in my original plan, but I am grateful that they came into my imagination just when I needed them. I want to add a pollinator, add legs to the other burying beetle, and then this piece will be ready to submit to the poster contest. Wisteria, both cultivated and wild, has been a wonderful feature for us lately. As I shared in my Stories recently, we visited Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, DC (next to last photo) and it was glorious. Wild wisteria is everywhere too along the road ways. Left untended the vines travel up tall tall trees showing off their lavender racemes. The blossoms have a delicate and very pleasant fragrance (to me!). While out on a favorite woods walk I plucked a few wisteria blooms to play with at home. The first mandala I made is in the last photo here. I found myself not wanting to let the pretty blooms go quite yet, so I stripped the flowers from the stems and arranged them inside a loose frame made from Kwanzan Cherry branches. Wednesday 10 April Cullompton Library, with families (1 of 2) Marvellous group of Doodlers. Beth, who exuded enthusiasm in every syllable. Who worked with her daughter M to shape a heart, which gradually filled with a sea of colour. Their friend T, who worked with absolute precision to create concentric rings, and I think would still be there now if time allowed. N, creating patterns worthy of luxury wallpaper, who reached out and connected with every other person in the room. Her brother T, stick collector extraordinaire, who made a snail from acorns. J, who came alone and gradually opened up about her home country, when she spotted a Sycamore seed and stood on a chair to show how it spins. Freya with I and W - I thoughtfully, gently, building a rainbow, T adding a piece at a time to a face, showing me each new addition. By the time I suggested we expand our work to join them together, the group was so bonded that collaboration came naturally, bridges and roads joining islands and surrounding them. When time ran out we paused to walk around it, noticing how different it looked from each end. And then, led by T,we each found a place to put our feet, ourselves the final doodle piece. And lastly, we dismantled the whole thing together, each seed back to its box, ready for the next group.
