Beyazıt Tower was ordered by the Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II (1808–1839), and designed by Senekerim Balyan, who built it of stone in 1828 on the place of the original wooden Beyazıt Tower, which was destroyed in a fire and was constructed earlier by the architect’s brother, Krikor Balyan. Nusretiye Mosque is an Ottoman imperial mosque located in Tophane district of Istanbul. It was commissioned in 1823–1826 by Sultan Mahmud II and built by Armenian-Ottoman architect Krikor Balyan. Its name commemorates the “victory” which Mahmud II won by destroying the Janissaries in 1826, the year of the mosque’s completion. The mosque is the first major imperial work by Krikor Balyan. Although it is sometimes described as belonging to the Empire style, it is also considered as one of the last Ottoman Baroque mosques. The mosque follows the model of Selim III’s imperial mosque in Üsküdar, as seen in some of its details and in the portico and double-winged imperial pavilion fronting the mosque. Despite its relatively small size the mosque’s tall proportions creates a sense of height, which may the culmination of a trend that began with the Ayazma Mosque. From the outside, the mosque’s most notable details are the extreme slenderness of its minarets and its sebil and muwaqqitkhana which have flamboyantly undulating surfaces. Es ist kein Bankgebäude und keine Börse, auch kein schickes Bürogebäude – dieser prächtige Bau in Breslau (Wrocław), malerisch direkt am Nikolaus-Kopernikus-Park (Park Mikołaja Kopernika) gelegen, ist heute die Heimstätte eines Puppentheaters (Teatr Lalek). Das war zugegeben nicht immer der Fall. Das Gelände mit reicher Baugeschichte war im 15. Jahrhundert ein Schießübungsplatz für die Schützenbruderschaft einer Kaufmannsgilde, später samt einem Park, Pavillon und Belvedere. In der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts wurde an deren Stelle durch Carl Gotthard Langhans ein klassizistisches Palais errichtet, welches ab als Clubhaus des Vereins christlicher Kaufleute zu Breslau genutzt wurde. Der rasch wachsende Verein ließ das Palais schließlich abreißen und es entstand der heutige neobarocke Bau durch das Architekturbüro Paul Kieshchke & H. Bielenberg. Die ursprünglichen Innenräume mussten jedoch bereits 1937 einem Umbau im monumentalen Stil des Dritten Reichs weichen. Es kam der Krieg, den das Gebäude weitgehend unbeschadet überstand und nun unter Verwaltung der Gesellschaft der polnisch-sowjetischen Freundschaft gestellt wurde. Seit dem 18. Küçüksu Pavilion or Göksu Pavilion is located in the Küçüksu district of Istanbul, between Göksu Stream and Küçüksu Stream, on the Üsküdar-Beykoz road on the Bosphorus. It was built by Nigoğos Balyan for Sultan Abdülmecid and its construction was completed in 1856. Various western ornamental motifs were used on the sea façade decorated with reliefs, the small pool with a fountain, and the stairs. It consists of two floors rising above on a plinth about 3m above the ground. The sea front is divided into three vertical parts. Of these, the one in the middle is flat and the ones on the sides are convex. The door in the middle section is reached by a magnificent, horseshoe-shaped marble staircase. Built on the shores of the Kağıthane stream and also known as the Çağlayan Mosque, the existing Sadabad Mosque was rebuilt during the reign of Abdülaziz. The first mosque in this location was built in 1722. Twice damaged by fire, it was last rebuilt in 1862. Its plan was drawn up by two brothers, the architects Sarkis and Agop Baylan. The mosque is built along a symmetrical plan and above its entrance is the seal of Sultan Abdülaziz. This place was my last station for that day. I wanted to create a longexposure Image to emphasize the lights in the night and the moving clouds. This archtiecture of the Bode Museum is a wonderful Neobaroque building which was built in the end of the 19th century. When I saw this building, Mozarts Requiem "Lacrimosa" came into my mind. I wanted to convey this idea of a powerful Photo which shows this buildings impact on the viewer. EN: Ihlamur Pavilion in Istanbul and its interior. Ihlamur Pavilion is the pavilion in Ihlamur Promenade, located in the valley between Beşiktaş and Nişantaşı. Between 1849-1855, two pavilions named “Ceremonial Pavilion” and “Retinue Pavilion” were built here by Nigoğos Balyan for Abdülmecid (1839-1861). Of these, Ceremonial Pavilion is the real Ihlamur Pavilion. The rectangular planned kiosk, consisting of a single floor on a high plinth, was built in an eclectic style with neobaroque elements made of cut stone. It has a special place among Ottoman buildings with its floral motifs, gold leaf plaster decorations, stucco decorations and dark blue glass door wings. ——————————————————————————— TR: Ihlamur Kasrı ve iç mekanı. The palace, built by Sultan Abdulaziz to replace the old Çırağan Palace which was at the same location, was designed by the Armenian palace architect Nigoğayos Balyan and constructed by his sons Sarkis and Hagop Balyan between 1863 and 1867, during a period in which all Ottoman sultans built their own palaces rather than using those of their ancestors. The inner walls and the roof were made of wood, the outer walls of colorful marble. A beautiful marble bridge connects the palace to the Yıldız Palace on the hill behind. A very high garden wall protects the palace from the outer world. The construction and the interior decoration of the palace continued until 1872. ——————————————————————————— TR: İstanbul Beşiktaş’taki Çırağan Sarayı ve batı kapısı. EN: A portrait of Sarkis Balyan, one of the 19th century Ottoman court architects. Sarkis Balyan (1835 – 1899) was an architect from the Armenian Balyan family of architects. He is the son of Garabed Amira Balyan, who was also an architect. Sarkis Balyan was born in Istanbul and went to Paris to study with his older brother Nigoğos Balyan in 1843. He graduated from Collège Sainte-Barbe de Paris and also he graduated from Ecole des Beaux Arts. After returning to Istanbul, he worked with his father and brother. After his father and older brother died, he continued to work with his brother Hagop Balyan. He was exiled to Europe during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II. He was able to come back only 15 years after his exile. He died in Istanbul in 1899. Sarkis Balyan left many works in Istanbul with his family, such as Çırağan Palace, Kağıthane Mosque and Yıldız Palace. ——————————————————————————— TR: 19. yüzyıl Osmanlı saray mimarlarından Sarkis Balyan’ın bir portresi. Sarkis Balyan, İstanbul’da doğdu ve 1843 yılında ağabeyi Nigoğos Balyan’la birlikte okumak için Paris’e gitti. Collège Sainte-Barbe de Paris’i bitirdi. Ecole des Beaux Arts’dan mezun oldu. İstanbul’a döndükten sonra babası ve ağabeyiyle birlikte çalıştı. Babası ve ağabeyi öldükten sonra kardeşi Hagop Balyan’la çalışmaya devam etti. Osmanlı padişahı II. Abdülhamid döneminde Avrupa’ya sürgüne gönderildi. Sürgünden ancak 15 yıl sonra gelebildi. 1899’da İstanbul’da öldü. EN: Portrait of Nigoğayos Balyan. Nigoğayos Balyan, born in 1826 and died in 1858 in Istanbul, was an Ottoman-Armenian court architect and a member of the Balyan family. Nigoğayos Balyan was born in 1826, the first son of Garabed Amira Balyan. In 1843, he traveled to Paris with his brother Sarkis where they studied architecture at Collège Sainte-Barbe. But, due to an illness, they returned to Istanbul in 1845. He worked in collaboration with his father Garabed, which allowed him to gain experience. He was appointed as an advisor in the field of arts to Sultan Abdülmecid I. He also founded a school for architects to teach them Western architecture. Nigoğayos planned the construction of the Dolmabahçe palace with his father. He died in Constantinople in 1858 from typhoid at the age of 32. ——————————————————————————— TR: Nigoğayos Balyan’ın portresi. 1826’da doğup 1858’de İstanbul’da vefat eden Nigoğayos Balyan, Osmanlı-Ermeni saray mimarıydı ve Balyan ailesine mensuptur. Ancak bir hastalık nedeniyle 1845’te İstanbul’a döndüler. Babası Garabed’in yanında çalışarak tecrübe kazandı. Sultan Abdülmecid’e sanat danışmanı olarak atandı. Ayrıca mimarlara Batı mimarisini öğretmek için bir okul kurdu.
