Things are happening at the #Pergamonmuseum! 🚧 And we take you on a look behind the scenes. 🧐 Here you can see the dismantling of the victory stele of King Asarhaddon of Assyria over Egypt. The 3.22 m high stele weighs a total of 6146 kg, which is why 14 pallets were needed to move it. What we also did not know until now: the fragments of this stele, which were discovered in 1888 during the excavation in Sam'al (Zincirli, Türkiye), were reassembled in the museum by simply stacking the basalt blocks on top of each other. Glue or bonding agents were not used! The fractures between the blocks were so definite that it was enough to puzzle them together, the three big fragments on top working as stabilizing elements. // Im #Pergamonmuseum bewegt sich was! 🚧 Und wir nehmen euch mit auf einen Blick hinter die Kulissen. 🧐 Hier seht ihr den Abbau der Siegesstele des Königs Asarhaddon von Assyrien über Ägypten. The Ishtar Gate was the eighth gate to the inner city of Babylon (in the present-day Iraq). It was constructed c. 569 BC by order of King Nebuchadnezzar II on the north side of the city. It was part of a grand walled processional way leading into the city. The original structure was a double gate with a smaller frontal gate and a larger and secondary posterior section. The walls were finished in glazed bricks mostly in blue, with animals and deities (also made up of colored bricks) in low relief at intervals. The gate was 15 meters high, and the original foundations extended another 14 meters underground. German archaeologist Robert Koldewey led the excavation of the site from 1904 to 1914. After the end of the First World War in 1918, the smaller frontal gate was reconstructed in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin. And this museum, The Pergamon Museum, due to humidity problems in its basement, in fact, is placed on an island surrounded by the river Spree, is going to undergo a huge renovation and will remain closed for 14-20 years, with a partial reopening by 2027.
