📍 Eyre Mountains / Taka Ra Haka Conservation Park Our walk began at dusk, striding purposely through tussock in the rapidly growing gloom, head torches illuminating a ridiculously small circle within the comparative immensity of the landscape. There's something exhilarating about a night walk, especially through new territory. My heart thumps with something very close to fear as I step into the darkness, the unknown. But I've got all my bases covered with extra batteries, a spare head torch, navigation, my tent and all the other tramping essentials, just in case we can't find the hut within this thick, cloying blackness. Emilie is holding my hand extra tight and I'm making up a story about a cow who escapes her paddock to chase after her calf, it's almost true fiction inspired by a small group of Mama cows we drove past a few kilometres back, who had broke obviously bad to cross the road and stand sullenly outside the enclosure containing over 20 chubby black calves. The thin beam of my head torch captures movement underfoot and we stop to admire the bright gold and black markings of Hemiandrus focalis, a species of ground wētā endemic to the mountains of New Zealand's South Island. The rippling waters of the Ashton Burn glimmer and shine as we wade carefully across, shocked by the biting cold. Faster now, we speed along the trail, listening to a Ruru call out from the invisible mass of beech forest to our left. Something flickers silvery in the distance, then the rectangular grey tin shelter of Upper Oreti Hut looms out of the mist like a ghost ship. I try not to squeal as a mouse bounds across the porch; there's a huge spider perched in a web by the window and the stick limbed form of a cave wētā on the doorknob. Inside, the hut feels cavernous and and dank but we've come armed with fairy lights and girly stuff, and in no time, the billy is boiling and there's a little fire burning in the hearth. This will be our shelter from the storm until the bad weather that's ravaging the lower South Island passes through, leaving swollen rivers, bent and broken branches and a fresh dusting of snow in its tracks. #eyremountains #nightwalking #tramping
